Blank screen when starting BttF and MI

edited July 2012 in Game Support
I recently purchased Back to the Future during the holiday sale. I go to install the first chapter and when I start to run it, the splash screen pops up. I click on Episode 1 and then the screen goes black. I wait for it to load and then I can hear the start of the menu music (that twinkling sound), but the screen is still blank. I wait a few seconds and then there's nothing.

I think that's odd so I try to load up Monkey Island (which had worked a couple months ago) and I get the same thing. Splash screen, then a blank screen. If I press a mouse button on the blank screen I hear an ocean wave crest and that's it.

Jurassic Park runs just fine though. It is just those two games that are acting up. :\

I was thinking maybe I should uninstall them and just install the games from the disc (I'll have to wait for BttF tomorrow, since that's when my copy is set to arrive), but I'm not sure if I'd be able to activate them again since I already done that once for the downloadable episodes.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Hello,

Can you provide me with a DXDiag file, please?

To send a DXDiag, click the Start menu, click Run, and then type in DXDiag and press enter. After it loads, click Save All Information and save the file where you'll be able to easily find it. Open the file and then press Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+C to copy the contents of the file, and then include that in a reply.

    Thanks,
    Michael

Here's the DxDiag, hopefully it was done right. Not been having the best of luck today with electronics in general. :P

Can you try hitting alt+enter after the game loads? Seems like it might be putting your monitor into an unsupported resolution, and that will force it into windowed mode.
  • edited December 2011
Ok it brought the game into windowed mode (For BttF) but the flux capacitor symbol is in the lower left corner, and doesn't move. The same sounds as before. It's acting like it is freezing/stalling. I'll get a white screen if I do it a second time. Bleeeeh.

Monkey Island: When I do the same thing I hear the windows "ding" and then it finally goes into windowed mode, all white. The funny thing is I *just* updated my graphics driver literally the other day. :\
  • edited December 2011
Try right-clicking the executable for the game and then click Run as Administrator and see if that helps at all.
  • edited December 2011
Nope. I get the same thing. Frozen looking capacitor, black screen. If I move my mouse around I can hear the clicks sometimes. I even uninstalled both games and tried installing the game being run as administrator.

You can try if updating to the latest via sound driver helps.
  • edited December 2011
Just tried that, didn't work. I get the same blank screen.

I had searched last night on google to see if there were any fixes and from what I read, someone earlier in the year had sort of the same issue on this site. They were able to fix it by going into the video options of the menu and changing some display option around. That's probably what's wrong with this, however I can't even see the menu to be able to adjust it. :\ I just get sound and a black screen.

Ok, something a bit... new. I uninstalled both games, including the settings. I go to run Monkey Island and when the game starts, I see the mouse cursor for about.. 30 seconds. Then it disappears. I hear the main menu start (albeit the sound of the "splash" is a bit.. distorted, but probably just me hearing things). Still blank screen. I hit alt+enter and it pops up in windowed mode. I can SEE the main menu screen, however, the cursor doesn't move when I scroll into the window. I can still click on things, but the picture just stays on the main page.

You could try if running the game during a clean boot changes anything.

Booting clean in Windows Vista / 7:
    1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
    2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
    3. Uncheck Load Startup Items
    4. Select the Services tab
    5. Check Hide all Microsoft services
    6. Click Disable all
    7. If running the game on Steam, re-check the "Steam Client Service"
    8. Click on OK
    9. Click Restart.
    10. After reboot, run the game to see if it works.

After performing the necessary steps, restore your system by doing the following:

    1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
    2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
    3. Click Ok
    4. Click Yes, when asked to restart your computer

I tried that, it didn't work. I keep getting the same thing. Freezing on the loading icon, cursor isn't showing up in the game window, but I can still hear it sift through the options when I roll over where they are supposed to be. Someone told me it could be a directx or 3ddirect problem. I dunno, I'm getting a bit frustrated. Jurassic Park still works just fine, it is only Back to the Future and Monkey Island where MI worked not even a couple of months ago.

I don't really know what's happening there. One more thing you could try is replacing the prefs.prop files.
  • edited December 2011
Ok that helped. Looks like for some reason it won't play on medium graphics setting.

One tiny other issue... after doing that, my telltale username is no longer this one, but someone else's name now :\

Can you explain a little more? Does it show in the Game Launcher or somewhere else? And which Name is it?
  • edited December 2011
It shows in the game launcher. The name switches from my username to GuruGuru214.

I thought I could finagle the settings by guessing where they would be before using the prop switch. I appreciate a whole hell of a lot actually being able to see the game, but I don't want to play on someone else's name. heh.

I couldn't reproduce it with BTTF 101 and ToMI 101. What Episode do you get that with?

Also, you can try pressing CTRL SHIFT - while in the launcher to log in with your name.
  • edited December 2011
Hot damn that did it! Thank you sooo much for putting up with my crazy self! :P

The BIG issue was that for some strange reason, it wouldn't load up in high or medium graphic detail, only low. :\ I'm assuming Monkey Island will be the same way. I wonder what could have caused that to happen, my computer's really good. :\

    You're welcome.
I noticed that, and i don't really know. What is the exact graphics card model you have?
  • edited December 2011
uhm... I think it's an Radeon HD6900 series. Like I said before, it seems that this driver update made some go askew. Ah well, hopefully it's a known issue and there will be another driver update sooner or later to fix it.

I saw that much in the dxdiag, i was looking for which one of them (6970, 6990, ... ?)
Usually I can see that in the dxdiag too, but the PCI ID is missing in the database i check for these details.

Oh I don't know that. When I check, it just says 6900 series :|

Will I have to do that fix for all episodes? Or since I've got the first one done up that way, the settings will stay the same for the rest?

*sigh* well that fix worked for Back to the Future, but not Monkey Island :(

You said that it worked with earlier graphics drivers, right?
I think at this point your best option is to try some previous radeon drivers. If you find one that works, you can try to figure out which is the latest one that doesn't cause problems.
  • edited December 2011
Awesome, thanks. I'll give that a shot here in a bit and will update on the progress!

Yup yup. Just as I thought. There's something in the latest driver update causing the games to not run. Rolled back to the previous one and BAM, it works!

Just a tiny question, I notice that there are lines all over the graphics, almost like... how can I explain it.. sketch lines? They run diagonal, horizontal, etc. and it looks like feint triangles and rectangles around. They get more visible going higher in graphic setting, but are noticeable on lower settings. This isn't game breaking, just wanna know what that could be.

    Thanks Mr. Parks and DjNDB!

Now I'm just waiting on my physical copy of BttF to come in... supposed to have been yesterday.

    Thanks again!

Can you make some screenshots of that?
  • edited December 2011
Sure. I hope these are good enough. Like I said, the closer to 9 I get, the more the lines are detailed. I don't ever remember it doing this before the last time I launched the game.

The last picture you can see the sketch outline of the lower half of LeChuck and if you look at the paper, you can see the outline of the ship behind it. It's like I'm seeing the graphics and the skeletal outline sketches are bleeding through

I couldn't put it in a zip folder, cause it was too big for the attachment manager.

Indeed, it looks as if the wireframe of the graphics is shining through.
It's definitely a glitch, but i haven't seen it before.

Do you get that with another earlier driver version too?
Does changing the game resolution make it better or worse?
  • edited December 2011
Actually, no. It was normal the first time I played it. Then like the second or 3rd time it started this up. Changing the resolution does nothing. At first I thought that's what caused it but nah. It's just outright strange!

I think I am out of reasonable ideas. You could try if changing some of the 3D settings in the AMD control center does anything.
  • edited December 2011
Heh, it's quite alright. Like I said, it wasn't anything game breaking, just a minor curiosity. Thanks for trying to help with that issue though! I appreciate it!
  • edited July 2012
I'm having the same issue with BTTF ep1. I start from Steam or the .exe and I get only a black screen with sound. I replaced the prefs.prop file and this allowed the game to start normally on lowest settings, but it goes back to black screen as soon as I try to increase any of the video settings.

Like the OP, I'm using a Radeon 6900. I have the latest drivers. No dice with run as an administrator or various compatibility modes. Though some of these lead to a start-up crash or windowed (as opposed to full screen) black screen with sound that displays only a frozen flux capacitor cursor in the lower right-hand corner.

Below is my DxDiag. Any ideas? My thanks.
