Sam & Max Season 2 Crashing

edited September 2012 in Game Support
To be specific, I'm playing Episode 2 "Moai Better Blues", and I went to save my game after getting almost all of the decals. I click the cog at the upper left corner, then on Save/Load, and then nothing happened. I thought maybe I had missed when I clicked on it, tried again.. nothing. I tried clicking out, nothing.

Now I have to reload from the only other save I have (before getting any of the difficult decals). I sincerely hope this isn't going to happen more often. In fact, I'm wondering if this has happened to anyone else.

Details: Playing this on Windows XP, NOT on steam (I downloaded them from the Your Games tab). I've not experienced this with Season 1, or with Season 2 Episode 1.

Hopefully it was a one-time issue, but I thought I'd put this up in case it isn't. I don't want this to be a reoccurring problem.

EDIT: Oh, look, now I can't get the game to run. The error window says something about DLL (doesn't say anything else) and that it has experienced a problem and needs to close.

I am not sure if it's the same problem, since you could save earlier, but there is/was an issue that prevents saving without administrator privileges. If your windows XP user account is not an administrator account, you can try giving the user account writing privileges for the episodes folder in the installation directory.

For troubleshooting the crash, please post your dxdiag info.

    dxdiag
Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.

Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

Open the file and press Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+C to copy the contents, and paste them in a reply by pressing CTRL-V.
Sometimes the Forums spam filter catches long posts like this. Don't worry, we can still see them and make them visible.

Well, it's my computer so my user is also the administrator, so I don't think that's the case. In fact, I managed to beat Episode 2 this morning after the computer had been off for a while. However, Episode 3 just crashed and gave me the "DLL" error and said the program had to close.

I am thinking this might have something to do with being in Fullscreen and then switching out of the game. Either on purpose or accident, and then switching back into the game. I did just grab a copy of the dxdiag report, though I'm not sure what help it'll provide.

Thanks. That's a quite old system. You have an integrated graphics chip which could cause problems. Also you have old sound drivers. I couldn't find an official update for it, but let's hope that's not the problem. The game is a bit older too after all.

First i would make sure that your DirectX is up to date.

You can also try running the episode during a clean boot (see below).

If that doesn't help, you can try what Seg describes here.

    Booting clean in Windows XP:
    1. Click Start --> Run --> Type msconfig --> Click OK
    2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
    3. Uncheck Process SYSTEM.INI file
    4. Uncheck Process WIN.INI file
    5. Uncheck Load Startup Items
    6. Click on the Services tab
    7. At the bottom, check Hide All Microsoft Services
    8. Click Disable All
    9. If running the game on Steam, re-check the "Steam Client Service"
    10. Click OK
    11. Click Restart
    12. After reboot, run the game to see if it works.

After performing the necessary steps, restore your system by doing the following:

    1. Click Start --> Run --> Type msconfig--> Click OK
    2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
    3. Click OK
    4. Click YES, when asked to restart your computer

Yeah, new/decent computers are hard for me to afford/build, so when my last computer died my aunt got me this one free from her office cause they were getting new ones. Only thing I could really replace was the RAM, haven't been able to figure out what kind of graphics card I should get, or if it'd even be worth the trouble.

Direct X can't go above 9c, I think it is, but I can always see if there's another update for it. Beyond that if I still have trouble, I'll try the steps you listed. I appreciate the help and the prompt replies. Some places, I have to wait quite a long time before I get any help. I guess that's just another feather for Telltale's hat, even if you aren't actually a staff member. :p

there is/was an issue that prevents saving without administrator privileges.

Thank you for staving off my crushing depression. I'm working my way back to s2e3 (that's the last episode I had gotten to) now that I'm not playing my friend's copy and s2s1 crashed everytime I tried to load, I uninstalled it and reinstalled it but never thought to run as administrator. So again, thank you for indirectly helping me fix what was wrong.
