Playstation Vita

Since we have a thread specifically designed to deal with the 3DS, I feel that it's only appropriate to have one for the Vita too now that it's out.

Has anyone picked one up so far? Which version? Games?

i wish i could buy one

I would already have one...if the memory cards weren't so freaking expensive. Seriously, $100 for 32GB? Really? I 'm pretty sure I already have more than that in regards to PSP-compatible download games.

Wouldn't mind getting one, but its pretty darn expensive, and the 3DS is picking up steam now.

I think Sony shot themselves in the foot with the memory cards.
The unit price, is comparable to the 3DS at launch, that isn't too bad.
The games are also pretty alright, price wise.

But then, you get ridiculously expensive and pointless memory cards, that are pretty much vital for those who download stuff of PSN (Like me!!), and my experiences with the PSP having the EXACT SAME PROBLEM, has personally put me off it.

EDIT: Oh and I can't play any PSP games on it. Good thing I only have a handful of old PSP games, so its not such a big deal, but its the principle of it really.
(I mean I always want to buy used retail games of the previous consolefor dirt cheap to play on the new one, to tide me between releases. THAT IS VEEEEERRRRYYY IMMMPPPOOOORRRTAAANTTT SOOOOONNNYYY!!!)

EDIT 2: Oh and the digital versions of the games that are supposed to be cheaper than retail versions, are actually in reality MORE EXPENSIVE!

worse the memory card is needed to play ANY game on it... so unless you pay sony for an expensive memory card made by them for their system your hand held game system.. can not actually play any games.... I do not see how they thought that would win them points from their consumers... pretty shady move if you ask me... but ... OH well.... They could have at least made them compatible with standard SD cards.. but... then they couldnt sell you more stuff.. so really if you are planning on getting one add about $30-$100 to the final cost of the unit because it really is not much without a memory card...

Do you guys believe that they will have Jurassic Park The Game for this kind of portable device?

Possibility, but telltale hasn't said anything when it comes to the PSvita, so who knows.

I got the 3G just so I wouldn't regret getting the Wifi-only later. Picked up 3 games:

    Uncharted - It's Uncharted. It's awesome, obviously.
Katamari - This is my first Katamari game. Granted, it's freaking weird but it's a hell of a lot of fun.
Wipeout 2048 - Haven't tried it yet. Love Wipeout HD so I'm sure I'll enjoy this.

I sold my PSP 1000 (from 2005) and about 10 games and got over $100 for them. $100 may not sound like a lot but it was honestly more than I expected.

Eh, I'll just wait to get the system when the memory card price inevitably drops.

I did look at trade-in deals, though. Best Buy has a REALLY good one where you get $75 off with a trade-in of a PSP, plus and extra 40% trade-in bonus on any games traded in towards it, too.

I didn't see the appeal of the original PSP, and I doubt I'll see the appeal of the new one. I don't have the money for a new system, hell, the 360 really set me back when I got it.

However, I abhor the original Xbox and later fell in love with the 360 (or rather many of it's games). so there's really no way to be certain. I've yet to think of the 3DS as worth the price. In fact, I'm pretty pissed at Nintendo for the horrible launch price, which my cousin actually paid, only to not have a 3DS specific game for it until the price-cut later on. Granted that was as much my cousin's fault for wanting one at launch, but the original price was still ludicrous.

Oh, and in case anyone was wondering, no, I didn't like the Xbox 360 right away, either. I didn't want until until around 2010 after playing my cousin's for most of that year, and picked up a Slim during Black Friday that year. So yeah, what I said about "maybe eventually wanting one" could still happen, but much like the PS3, Sony hasn't impressed me these past few years.

Haven't owned a portable system since the Gameboy brick(I think I still have it actually). The last thing I need is to also play games when I'm not home. I have a few games on my iPod and a couple on my Android, and surprise, I never play them. The Vita just isn't going to be for me.

If I get one my first game will have to be either GTA, if they have one, or uncharted! The original psp my first game ever played was GTA Liberty City Stories!

Got the impression this thing would be locked down like a safe, which is a shame. The only thing I use portables for is emulation, which the Xperia Play has covered.

I will say that the screen is crisp and clean the graphics they achieved on uncharted are pretty amazing easily leaps better looking than the first game.
  • edited February 2012
I've been really impressed with the screen and graphics on it, way better than I was expecting. I haven't even tried out Uncharted which I got yet either.

Wow, someone else who loves Wipeout HD! Do you play on the PS3? If so, add me to your friends list so that we can have an online tournament.

Of course the Vita is better. The PSP is half as expensive and older. The Vita can play most downloadable PSP games, so it acts as a PSP for downloadable games, and you can even take advantage of the second stick on the Vita to make PSP games control better than they do on the original PSP.

    Tough choice.

It will really depend on the titles released for the Vita.. If it gets good games it will be better.

To clarify, it can NOT play PSP games physically, only via download. This is kinda stupid, but you can still download them for whatever price. As for using the second stick to make PSP games better? How does that work? You can use both thumbpads or can you remap things to that thumbpad similar to the 3ds?

Also, barely seen the Vita live(my gamestop DOES have demo units, but I had a good 4 seconds to see it as I was in a hurry) sizing didn't seem to be a problem, but is the screen really showing PS3 quality graphics?

When playing a PSP game, you can map the right analog stick to emulate the face buttons or the action buttons.

They aren't QUITE PS3-quality, but they're very close, and on a screen that size they are "effectively" PS3-quality. The Vita supports all the same graphics shaders and other such things, and while it lags a bit behind its console counterpart, the result is admirable.

there are parts of the Vita Uncharted that have me taking a little break to look around... its a really cool looking game.

As much as I'm enjoying the vita it keeps crashing on me, hopefully that's a software issue as its only happened booting up uncharted. then I get the blinking light of death, well not death, soft reset.
    Games i got are:

Uncharted: liking that theres more emphasis on treasure hunting
Ninja Gaiden Sigma: still an awesome game. Ninja trials give the analogues a beating
Escape plan: kind of shit. Controls are poor and akward holding the vita without hitting the touch pad
Rayman origins: rayman origins with relics. Loved it so much I needed to 100% it again :p

Figures that the best use for that I can think of is in Birth by Sleep.

Kind of an odd comment, but I've seen it popping up so I'll say it.

I hope a lot of people aren't saying the PSP Vita is great JUST cause the graphics are a tiny bit shinier or crisper. Cause that alone is no reason to think something is better.

So like the arrow keys on the PSP can be the second thumbpad? That would be pretty good.

Well that is still a pretty good milestone for handhelds.

the two rather large multitouch screens are certainly not hurting its cause either.

Decent launch titles were nice too, that doesn't happen all the time... I am looking at you 3DS... I wouldnt say I like it better than 3ds though... but I do like it better than psp.

Im thinking about it, gonna see if it keeps happening before I take it back. It happened about 4 times in a row, every time I did a soft reset then booted up uncharted it just kept crashing. Other than that, its only happened once so i'll see what happens

Ive got both vita and PS3 versions of Sigma, there arent any noticable differences other than possibly the framerate. Then again it came out in 2007 so its probably on par with early ps3 games. Everything looks good on such a small sharp screen. Actually, the Dynasty Warriors demo looked incredible. maybe even better than uncharted!

Got my Vita a few days ago. Got the launch special edition, so mine came with a memory card and a game (so long as you sign up for ATT service for 2 months, grumble.)

Sony's corporate BS is definitely a drawback, but that is true of all of its products, and most people are able to get over it for Apple, so I don't see why Sony would be any different.

Ignoring the politics of it, however, the Vita is quite simply the most unique and engaging gaming experience I have had in a long time. It is a perfect marriage of modern smart-device multitasking and traditional gaming functionality. I will sit in my house in front of my 52" TV, PS3, Xbox360 and $1500 gaming PC and play Uncharted (which I bought physically from gamestop) and FFIV (which I bought digitally on the PSN Store) on the Vita for hours. It is a strange phenomenon for me to then be able to take this experience on the road and play in airports and on my lunch breaks.
It is very difficult to describe why the Vita seems so different from anything else, maybe I should have brought a poet... Something about the goal of the system, and its execution of that goal certainly is poetic.
I'm not saying that everyone should buy one, nor am I saying that it will dethrone Nintendo in the handheld market, only that the Playstation Vita is a strange and beautiful creature that has made me feel like I am 8 years old again and unwrapping my first NES.

Golden Abyss. It isn't as good as 2 or 3, but still better than 1, and if you are an Uncharted fan you will have fun.
