Tablet PCs: Are they worth it?

edited March 2012 in General Chat
Howdy y'all.

I've recently been looking into getting a tablet PC (specifically an Asus Transformer), and I'm wondering if anyone with a tablet (of any kind) can give their honest opinion as to whether they are worth forking out £400 ($635-ish) for. My main uses for it: Writing on the bus (although that will only be another couple of months, then I leave college), watching films/TV shows (currently in the process of digitising my doctor who collection), internet browsing, reading books and maybe playing the odd game.

I've decided that the transformer is best for this, as it has micro SD card sockets (so I can have 80GB storage in the tablet, plus another 64GB in the dock), plus a USB socket or two, that I can plug an external hard disk into.

So thoughts on tablet PCs in general please! What are they like to watch films on? Play games on? Work with?

Also, if anyone knows of any software that is good for digitising blu-ray discs, I would be grateful!

I've got an ipad. It's faaaaaaantastic. I don't need to bother with transferable media like USB because I've got Drop Box to transfer all my media through. Video watching is fantastic, games are enjoyable but I don't play too many. I do a lot of writing on mine, set the music player going and just type away. Plus, you can work from anywhere.

Why don't you grab a netbook? It's cheaper than a Tablet PC and you can do all of the above, minus games (or, at least, I don't know any good games on netbooks).

    Depends.

Thanks to Onlive, a tablet can play any PC game, with the problem being controls. Should you be able to plug in say a 360 controller, maybe even connect to a TV, then tablet PCs are defenently worth it in the long wrong.

I did think of that a while ago. But part of the reason I want a tablet is the form factor. Reading a book for example would be better on a tablet than on a net book. Plus, the transformer doubles as a net book too.

As for games on netbooks: I think the average netbook these days is more powerful than my old computer was, so anything that ran on that should theoretically run on a netbook.

Also, with a netbook, I can't walk around pretending I'm a member of star fleet!

Well, the transformer does have a USB socket, and a HDMI port, so yeah that's a possibility.
