Using Steam save.

edited June 2012 in The Walking Dead
I am sure this is answered in this forum already, but I couldn't find it, sorry guys. Anyways, I'm one of the many who pre-ordered this game, waited for the release, and got a Steam key for Episode 1 as consolation for the delayed TTG release.

I never got around to downloading it from the website, but I believe it's been said on the forums that you need to download episode 1 from the website in order to unlock episode 2, can someone confirm this?

And if this is the case, can I use my Steam save of episode 1 to continue into my TTG episode 2? It's not a big deal for me to download it, and then re-do my choices again, just let me know.

Thanks!

Yes you need episode 1 to download episode 2. Yes you can use your steam saves for TTG version. Copy the entire my documents folder and not just the saves. I'm not sure if it would get over wrote if you installed a different version.

    The saves should work!

The saves are in the same place too and they should be compatible. It's not apart of the test path, but I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work.

If you want to be extra careful, you can back up your saves just in case. They're located in your Windows user Documents folder, then the folder:
    ~\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\

If you want to back it up, copy the whole "The Walking Dead" folder.

Thanks, everyone! I've downloaded and installed the TTG-version, and backed up my saves.

You mention to copy the whole My Documents folder, but I assume that is for Windows. I too am in the situation where I bought directly from TTG but then started playing via the Steam code they sent me when they had trouble getting the TTG store to provide a day 1 access.

Now that 400 Days is free to us loyal TTG store customers (which is awesome, thanks TT people!) I'd like to play it using my Steam save.

Bottom line: I'm on a Mac. I know how to open a Mac apps package to see its contents, but I'm concerned that copying the entire package content from one to the other will change pathway information on the TTG-store version and either break it or somehow launch the Steam version anyway.

What files or folders do I need to copy from the Mac app Steam-version package to the TTG-store versions package to import my saves.

Anyone who can help, I greatly appreciate it! Thank you.

EDIT: So I downloaded and installed the TTG-version and then from inside the game, downloaded and installed all the episodes. When I went to confirm that that were no save games in this version, prior to going ahead and copying stuff over from the Steam-version, I found that my save games were there ready to be loaded up and continued. I hadn't moved anything at all, this should have been a clean copy of the TTG version. Can anyone explain how it "auto-imported" my Steam saves in the TTG-version, and if I should be worried about continuing from here and having future save issues OR lost/erroneous choices from my prior Season 1 game?

On Mac the saves are in the same place too for the different versions.
    They are strored at
    ~/Library/Application Support/Telltale Games/TheWalkingDead/

Ah, thank you very much! So I literally have to do nothing to switch from the Steam version to the TTG version. That's really awesome.

So, if I wanted to backup my save after 400 Days just to keep it safe until Season 2 hits, I should backup the copy located in the above folder, and not worry about backing anything up in the Steam folder? Or should I backup both. Thanks again!

You only need to backup the prefs.prop and all .save files from the above folder.
