edited January 2013 in Game Support
So, I was going to play episode 2 and I apparently my saves were gone.

I have it on Steam.

What can I do to retrieve my saves?

Hey guys, so when I tried to start episode 2 today, it asked me if I wanted it to "automatically make random choices for skipped episodes". I played ep1 all the way through twice and now all of my saved game slots are empty. When I'm not running the game, Steam still has my stats and shows my unlocked achievements..yet my saved games are gone when the game is running. Is this permanent? Please help, thanks for your time.

Ditto. I bought mine from the TellTale website. Tried loading a save for episode 2 and it gave me the option for random choices. Clicked no and it refused to let me go any further. Went back to episode 1 then pressed continue to find myself driving down the highway with the police officer. Pressed rewind to see the available chapters, and they were all gone.

Seems like I'm not the only one. I really don't have the time to play episode 1 again so I'd like to be able to continue with my own choices.

My saves aren't showing either. I'm on a MAC. First I can't transfer Steam saves to Telltale, and now they're not even loading up. If I have to play through episode 1 for a third time because of save loss I'll be a longtime fan finally giving up on Telltale.

There were similar cases before. You can try if this helps.
Make sure you backup the folder before though, in case it doesn't work as it should.

This is obviously not something that should have to be done! I know nothing is perfect, but one of the biggest aspects of this game is the continuity from episode to episode. Clearly, lots of us are having issues with erased games as well as choices being changed from the first ep. Something has clearly gone wrong and I'm hoping a telltale rep will address this soon. It's just a shame, it's been quite the wait for this release and with this current problem..it doesn't make me feel too motivated to play. I'd just like to know if it's a fixable issue. Thanks again

Help please. I bought the Season Pass for The Walking Dead on PC. Played through Episode 1 a few times. I downloaded Episode 2, but when I go to play it there are no save files to choose from. It just has 3 slots that say New Game.

I looked under "username\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead" and there are save files there.

Thanks in advance for the help.

BTW...I also have it on 360 and have played through it. Absolutely amazing game!

i went to play ep2 and all i can pick new game? if i load my ep1 save it just ends and takes me back to the menu and asks if i want to generate random choices, which i don't, so it just takes me back again. i'm really lost my save from ep1 IS listed unlike some others here did my post make sense?

I've already re-downloaded this episode three times, and it is still giving me problems with saying "Get". For some reason my other save file has mysteriously disappeared, and yes I am playing on the only profile I play on. No need to worry about HD space I have a Final Fantasy 13 Elite with 100 gigs of space left. Let me know of any news on this guys.

I know, but it's the only workaround i know at the moment.
I hope it get's fixed eventually, but it's either trying that and with some luck being able to play now, or waiting for a fix at some point in the future.

I just realized that because I'm on a Mac AND using Steam (because of Episode 1's first-day bullshit), that this will probably never get resolved just like my last issue.

Did anyone using DjNDB's advice resolve the issue? Using either Steam or Mac?

The other thread about altered choices from ep.1 are being addressed. I'm hoping that this will be discussed with someone from Telltale.

Are you guys playing anyway or waiting?

I've been having a similar issue. Except my Episode 2 progress won't save. My Episode 1 progress seems to be staying intact, but I played through Episode 2 about halfway to 3/4th and it was definitely after an autosave that I quit for a while, then came back, and all my progress was lost, like I hadn't played any of Episode 2 yet.

I've tried the "fix" (see: DjNDB's post #7) posted in the other thread about lost saves. But this doesn't seem to be the issue. Regardless of my Walking Dead folder showing saves from not too long ago. D:

I have the Steam version on Windows 7.

i don't know if this is related to the problem, but I've completed Episode 2 (PC, Steam version, administrator) and I still don't see the complete menu for it (you know, the "CONTINUE, STATS, CHAPTERS, PLAY" which is available for EP1), I just have one option: "PLAY". If I hit PLAY the Episode starts from the last autosave.
In the savegame menu there's only one savegame, the one related to the last autosave of Episode 1. This is weird, because - as I've already stated - I've beaten the whole Ep2 - Starved for Help.

After i downloaded Episode 2, i was extremely disappointed when i loaded up my game to find that both of my saved games from the finished Episode 1 had completely disappeared. Despite my disappointment i trudged ahead and just played through again. I had to stop short of finishing and leave. When i came back to finish and selected my saved game to be loaded, it started me back at the beginning.... It does this EVERYTIME. TellTale please help. Even if you cant recover my save files, can you please fix the issue so i can actually play the game.

I did everything as listed. But when I tried to load the game, the saves date was today. And would not load. Screen just turned black, and only the Walking Dead menu cursor showed.:mad:

why were the other issues addressed but not ours? how difficult is it to have a save recognized by a fucking game...

Same problem here. I've tried a few different saves, my last being save_12. I went backwards through 12,11,10 no difference, always a black screen.

I just had the black screen after loading a save game issue too.
What helped was deleting the entire "SyncFs" folder from
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\
Just to be sure not to mess up anything, i would make a backup copy of the entire "The Walking Dead" folder though.

    OK sorted the problem
It takes some trial and error but it worked for me.
Zefiend is on the right track.

    1. Copy the last save game to another location (mine was save_12)
    2. Delete all saves.
    3. Start a new game and play until out of the car.
    4. Goto save folder, I had save 1,5 and 6 for some reason.
    5. Copy save_12 back to save game folder.
    6. Here is the trial part - rename save_12 as save_6
    7. Start game, actually load game not just to the save list as this does not change from your last save.
    8. If you get a blank screen and not loading rename as save_5 and repeat.
    9. Keep renaming down until one works.

I got back to the end of chapter 7 game but the loading screen still only shows chapter 1.

Hope this works, it saved me 2+ hours play again.

Hey I just wanted to say that Loki's concept seems to work.

It's a bit fiddly and I can't seem to reliably get multiple save games to show up. However, I've just been using slot one and restoring my Old Save 1 and 2 slots into them.
    What I did was:
    1. Created a backup of the Telltale Games\The Walking Dead directory in My Documents.
    2. Deleted above mentioned The Walking Dead folder. (This didn't work the first time so optional step 2 - delete a default prefs file inside my Steam The Walking Dead directory - sadly it didn't recreate itself but it's somewhere around C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\the walking dead\Pack\default - I believe it's called prefs.prop)
    3. Played the game until the car crash or until the first save appears (easiest to just play in non full screen mode and just watch the saved game location while you listen to the tedious cop drone on and on.)
    4. When a save (or more likely 2 appear,) exit the game.
    5. Delete the saves that are in there, being sure the note the name of the newest one so probably "save_2.save"
    6. Locate the save you want to restore in your backed up The Walking Dead folder and copy it back, renaming it to whatever the name you noted in step 5. was - again, probably "save_2.save"
    7. Launch game and while the Open save screen appears wrong it should resume where you left off. (It's absolutely possible you might need to try different saves as Loki noted but for me, the lastest saves all seemed to work.)

Since I was playing 2 games, I've just created 2 swappable saved games folders and seem to be able to swap them back and forth - both occupying the save game 1 slot. It's not ideal but at least I was able to finish Ep 2 and keep my other game progress at midway through Ep 1.

    Hope this helps someone,
    Del

Thanks for verifying Del, pleased it worked. Mine was a bit weird as I ended up renaming my old save as save_4 but the new game i started did not create a save_4 ???

This thread is outdated, and we have patched some of the issues mentioned in here. We are also still investigating the issue of lost saves or a corrupted prefs.prop file.

If anyone is still experiencing these issues, you may find the information you are looking for in our PC/Mac Support sub-forum: http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=85
