Character Discussion: Comics vs TV Series. (Possible Spoilers)

edited July 2012 in The Walking Dead
I haven't read the comics, so I'd like for those who have (and have watched the show) to compare characters. Feel free to give input as to which changes are good, or bad, and also: feel free to mention characters from the Comics not in the Show, and characters in the Show not in the Comics if you want.

The main reason I stopped watching the TV show after the second or third episode was I disliked how they changed the characters. In the comic, Rick was realistically helpless, Lori only had sex with Shane once, and Shane was less of a cad.

I was hoping they would just delve into arcs that Kirkman didn't do for the comic series as opposed to making something with different canon.

The comic is so much better. The series is a LOT slower (they don't stay in Atlanta very long in the comic series) and there are a lot of new characters introduced in the TV series. Different characters are killed in the TV series than in the comic.

Let's see here:

Rick: In both the tv series and the comics, once Rick sets his mind on something, he follows it. In the tv series, he is currently "isolating" himself from the rest of the group in hopes that he will improve the group's safety.

Lori: I don't understand the hate for this character. Sarah Wayne Callies is (in my opinion) the best female actress on the show. She's treated with more regard in the tv series, as she befalls a certain fate in the comics.

Carl: I'm excited to see this guy turn badass in season 3. He's also starting to look like his character counterpart. In the comics, Carl has matured more quickly then any other character.

Andrea: Tolerable in the comics, but not the tv series, Andrea gets to be become friends with Michonne in season 3. This did not happen in the comics.

Daryl: Personally one of my favorite characters on the show, Daryl has turned from lonely forest hunter to Rick's right hand man. He is not in the comics.

Carol: What's the point of having her around? I guess she was alright in the comics...

T-Dog: Please give this guy some lines in season 3. Glen Mazzarra said that they have big plans for T-Dog in season 3. He is not in the comics.

Glenn: Glenn's alright. He went from scout boy to becoming the boyfriend of one the most good-looking characters in the show. I won't tell anyone what happened with his in the comics, but he befalls a gruesome fate.

Maggie: We still need some time for this character to develop in the tv show. In the comics, Glenn and Maggie have a purely sexual relationship.

Hershel: I hated this guy in the comics. Remember him from the game? Apparently he grew a beard in season 3.

Beth: I don't know.

Michonne: She's probably going to become my favorite character in the tv show. She becomes good friends with Andrea. In the comics, she is one of the most likable characters.

Governor: We know this guy from the comics. Question is, how bad will he be in the tv series? In the comics, he befalls a certain fate from a character who we all know and love.

Phew. Did I forget someone? What do you think?

That's great and all, but not really the point of this thread. I'd prefer people to be familiar with both if replying.

Yeah, what do you think of Daryl? And if you could elaborate more on the characters... Surely there must be more then those minor differences? For example: is Hershel more likable in the TV series, or?...

Well, Daryl is probably going to become scolded by his brother in season 3 for teaming up with Rick's team. I like Daryl, and he has loyalty for Rick's group. I don't think that I was saying that Hershel was likable in the tv series either. Pretty much the only epic thing he did was defending his farm on loads of infinite ammo. It's going to take a while for Maggie and Glenn's relationship to form, as is Rick and Lori's relationship.

Daryl seems bad ass... Oooh! Here's a fun fame, if you had to make a TWD bad ass, what would his arsenal be?

I'd have a guy with a Boat Oar/Paddle/whatev, with a long Knife, and a Sling with specialized Lutetium "bullets" (As in sling Ammo, not gun ammo).

shouldn't the game characters be allowed to compete in this vs thread since this is a forum for the game?

Zeruis covered quite a few, I guess I'll throw in afew other characters as well as my own opinions of the ones he listed;

Tyrese: This guy was a bad ass. He was Rick's right hand man for a while. He was a great character but he doesn't appear in the television series sadly.

Glen/Maggie: They're both pretty much true to the comics in the television series. Their relationship is much more complex than what Zeruis mentioned though. Glen was a fan favorite and one of the oldest members of the group.

Hershel: He's pretty similar to the television version. I liked watching how he changed towards the end of the prison arc. He's a lot less likable in the comics though.

Lori: She's a lot less naggy in the comics. She's probably my least favorite on the show besides T-Dog.

Beth: Wasn't in the comics that I know of.

Andrea: She's one of my favorites in the comics. They've kinda wrecked her character so far in the television series though. She seemed to get better towards the end of season 2. She dated Dale in the comics for quite a while.

Dale: Dale wasn't bad in the comics. Since they killed him so early in the television series you'll miss out on some cool stuff later in the series. He wasn't quite the bleeding heart in the comics either, though I still enjoyed his character.

Michonne: She's pretty awesome. I'm kinda curious how her story plays out in season 3 since Tyrese isn't a part of the story. She has a lot of interaction with the Governor, I'm curious how far they push it in the T.V. series because it was very brutal.

Rick: He is somewhat true to the character in the comics. He doesn't have the epiphany that resulted from Dale's death though. That doesn't happen until much later in the story. Rick's pretty selfish when it comes to the group. He's looking out for Lori and Carl at this point. He cares very little for the others.

Carol: Her character is a lot different in the comics. Sophia isn't killed by walkers (she's still alive in the comics). Tyrese not being in the show also effects her a lot as well.

The Governor: This dude is pure crazy. He's a great character in the comics (He teaches Rick and the rest of the survivors a valuable lesson) though and I'm somewhat worried after I saw the season 3 trailer. We'll see though.

Daryl: He's not in the comics but he's my favorite by far. Seeing how he and Rick interacted kinda has me worried that they're going to try and have him fill in for Tyrese. I'll be pissed if they do, haha.

There are a lot more characters but some won't appear and I'm too lazy to try and remember the others, especially those not in both mediums. I've also left out several spoilers, I just don't want to massively spoil some of the story.

There are a lot of differences so far in the series with the story so I still get surprised at some things. That's pretty cool. So far though, the comics are the best.

For those of you who haven't seen the trailer - http://scifi.bg/comic-con/the-walking-dead-сезон-3-трейлър/
Check the link

The characters I'm really afraid about are Andrea and the Governor. I'm not sure what will happen with Andrea in the TV show, cause she differs so much from the comics. Still, I like her.
The Governor, however, it's just... I'm not sure. Why remove his moustache... it just looks wrong. I really can't tell.
I guess I will somehow wait till October to form an opinion.

No, since the Game follows a completely different story. We're comparing Apples to Apples, not Apples to Oranges, so to speak.

I'm interested in the Governor, heard that the reason they picked him were his past performances as a Villain.

I hope he does, kinda, in some ways... I'd really like to see him
form a Battle Couple with Michonne
. Most BA team ever IMO.

Before the announcement of David Moressey as the Governor, everyone was thinking that Merle was going to be the Governor. I think he's going to show up and kill T-Dog.
