iPad/iPod - too slow for TWD game?

Why are the graphics so crummy on newest iPad version compared to the preview build?

Touch arcade version running on iPad 3 posted today

Why such a change? The older version had WAY more detail and ran much smoother?
It seems to take you out of the immersion.
The opening shot at the beginning of the newest version, of the car driving down the freeway with no roadside detail just looks plain awful.

Yeah. They're totally different. Get real mad.

No I just wondered why they had to make such a graphics hit when everything seemed to run fine in the beta build?
    Not mad, just really confused?

Sorry. "Plain awful" was a bit strong for confusion. I honestly can't tell the difference, even with your helpful videos.

An ios tablet might have a good processor but what about graphics ? have you seen the sizes of graphics cards these days ? i don't think tablet tech has reached the stage where a decent spec'd card can be shrunk down and fitted without ample cooling..

and as for the phones same applies the size/weight/battery life affects the capabilities of the device...

They clearly had it running better before with much better graphics (smoother, much more background details)
And now they have trimmed everything down.
It is like running a game at full settings vs low settings.
Not a deal breaker but I am quizzed as to why they reduced the graphics so much?

Look at the details.. I can see some missing stuff like for example the trees which are present in the E3 version.

Seems like they were trying to oversell the iPad version.
There is nothing wrong per'se how it is now.
I'm just VERY curious why they would show the press a souped up version and release a watered down one?
It's like ordering a chocolate cake with all the toppings, and getting a plain sponge!
  • edited July 2012
probably because the size of the download was too large? Heating or crashing issues?
  • edited July 2012
I haven't looked at it yet. But it could be the press version was optimized for the iPad 3. Then when they tried it on an iPad 2 it choked.

So they scrapped iPad 1 altogether, and downscaled slightly for the iPad 2.
  • edited July 2012
I doubt it as the iPad 2 and iPad 3 are pretty similar in performance, the extra power is used for the screen.
I hope someone from telltale can clear this up?

I just purchased this morning for £2.99 and also the other episodes 2-5 for an additional £10.49 and very disappointed about how this first episode runs on my iPod Touch 4g. My iPod is only 6 months old so very new, but it lags and pauses and stutters - I have tried to reboot the device but it still runs very badly.... I really hope we get an update as soon as possible for this as I am really angry that it is spoiling this game for me...

If it overheats then it is the ipad that is broken by design.
No computers should overheat when they are running at stock speed. If they do, they are simply badly designed.

an ipod touch is pretty underpowered for this kind fo game i'd say

Does it seem to lag between scenes like the console games, or is it something different?

Anyone from telltale want to comment on why it was "gimped" from the E3 version?
Was it a file size problem/restriction?
  • edited July 2012
I think this is a game to be played on a console or PC.. I don't think you could expect the iPad version to be the same quality..
  • edited July 2012
No I think the quality is fine for the iPad, it is just strange why they showed a "souped up" version (better textures, much smoother, more background details running on iPad at E3.
Check out the top post here and compare.
Zombies are in the forest when the car crashes, yet before the crash there are no trees at all. A forest just appears? Stuff like that takes away from the atmosphere!
As I said it was there before and ran great on the iPad as seen in the video, then they gimped it!
    I want to know why?
Size issues? Though at 329mb I doubt it as Hector was 661mb at the was classic 2d point and click!

You've got a real problem with exaggeration. Missing trees and a lower texture count is like getting a typo on your cake, not a fucking sponge.

Why bother posting here? You add nothing to the topic.
I am putting this out to the devs, not the divs!
Telltale had a much nicer version at E3 and the one released on the app store is graphically different?

Yes it lags between scenes and also freezes and stutters quite a lot.

I have emailed Tell Tale Games Support for help to see what they are doing about this.

I am quite upset because I was really looking forward to this game as I am a big fan of the franchise and have read some great reviews.

The screenshots from reviews that were released before the game release date were also of a lot higher quality than this first released version.... the main menu is not even retina quality graphics...

    ...again very disapointed.

I wish that they would respond to this!
I bought the game regardless as I do like Telltale a lot, and I will support them, and indeed I have ALL of their games released on multiple formats, but I waited out on TWD to experience it on iPad, as I feel it is the best way to play adventure games.
I think it is a great port, just needs to be up to the E3 press demo, and fix the issue of the jittering and frame rate drops.

Seriously I already posed it but as this is page 2 already some might not have seen it and jumped in right here:

It looks as good as PC in the video.

    Hi,

Sorry to open a old thread, but I was searching the net for an answer and I didn't get it. I just spent 20$ on buying all the episodes from app store. I played episode 1 on my iphone 5 and it ran just great- no lag at all. Now I started to play episode 2 on ipad 3, and it is just rubbish. It laggs, and not in a way that I can't play it is just annoying... Also the level of terrain details is so much worst than on iphone 5. What do you think the problem is? I tried to restart the game completly and it is the same. It is because it's not optimized for the ipad 3? It such a lousy experience...
Oh and one more thing- can you transfer the saved files of the game between iphone and ipad?
