In episode 2 they claim to be starving

edited August 2012 in The Walking Dead
but in the freezer Kenny states that Larry is 6'4" and 300 pounds. My boss is 6'6", 235 and he's solid muscle. Larry would need approximately 3500 calories per day to maintain that weight at his age and height according to the "Basal Metabolic Rate" calculator. How can they be starving when Larry is consuming 3000+ calories all by himself or is that the reason why they are starving?

Perhaps he's not maintaining his weight or they only recently ran out of food. You could get pretty hungry in a week.

Also worth not over thinking comic book based fiction too much or the fact the dead have come back to life and walk around will cause real questions.

But I think they found or got into a grocery store thanks to Mark. So they were eating pretty good (I would assume) up until recently

Processed food has lots of calories and as cheshire cat pointed out they only recently ran out of food that Mark made available when he opened the door to the commisary to Lee's group.

I think they only recently began rationing and living off the land. What's the formula, 1 pound of fat is 3500 calories. Larry can go a long time before showing signs of weight loss. That's one advantage of being "husky" in a ZA...lots of fuel reserves.

It's also possible Kenny was exaggerating his weight in order to help his case. Or maybe he knew that Larry had weighed 300 pounds at one point but in the heat of the moment wasn't taking into consideration the amount of weight he must have lost by then.

True, in a zombie apocalypse would people really be asking around, seeing how much you weigh? He was probably just estimating.

Lilly was probably directly favoring Larry and giving him more food than the rest of'em so he maintained his weight with Lilly giving him food regularly.

I'm glad that someone else said this. I highly doubt that Kenny busted out his digital scale and had Larry hop on.

Or they used protein pills from the medical store.

He is also around 50 and uses Glyceryl trinitrate for his hearth, which decreases appetite in some cases.

or cos he shoves the bacon/jerky up lee's ass
  • edited August 2012
That would be just a waste of food.

    "here have some bacon Larry"

"Yea yea I still fucking hate you Lee."

...I've killed Larry in my mind 20 times by then.
  • edited August 2012
Why would you give him bacon or you know.. anything ?
If during conversation with mark you answer with *He just worries about his daughter*.. larry actually seems to back off a little.

From what I see, you lose muscle pretty substantially by the 8th week of starvation. He'd be 20 pounds lighter by that time. If they found Mark and the supplies a month or earlier after the end of episode one, Larry would be thinner.

He does look a bit thinner, or his clouths a lot bigger.

Maybe that wooly sweater is REALLY thick.

It's implied the food shortage and rationing is fairly recent, since it's stated the food Mark was able to get from the commissary was both enough for everyone and was "almost gone" by the time of Episode 2.

It also wouldn't surprise me if Lilly was sneaking Larry extra food too; I think Mark even suggests as much.

Heh well then, it looks like basal metabolic rate calculator is WRONG...

I though it was just an estimate and more of a point maker.*Big guy, big trouble*

I think that should be taken that into account when rationing food, anyone packing extra weight gets lower rations, until their bodies stored reserves are used.

That sounds like something Lilly would do.

Kenny personally weighed Larry last time they were at the doctors office to loot meds. He also gave him a prostate exam. It was an Awkward moment for the both of them.
  • edited August 2012
well something we can all agree on is that larry is a full head shorter by the end of episode 2 and about 10-15 lbs lighter... maybe more if we take ego into account

No, she was just feeding the hunters and her father.

The thing is when you don't eat for awhile, your body enters starvation mode, and doesn't break down your fat stores as fast, as when you are eating something. Read up on dieting, they all tell you have to eat something in order for the body not to enter starvation mode, you will lose weight faster.
