Episode 3 - Where have you died? [Spoilers]

edited September 2012 in The Walking Dead
Come on, admit it. :D

I died once when the bandits were holding the group hostage at the motor inn. I took too long responding and they fed me a lead salad for the trouble.

I also died about 6 times in a row to the pair of zombies in the boarded-up train station, though I blame that on poor game mechanics. I kept trying to pick up the weapon on the floor but Lee would just 'look' at it. I assumed I wasn't close enough to reach it. Took me a while to notice that you actually have to manually change your cursor function from 'look' to 'pick up'. I hate 2 on 1 zombie boxing. XD

Just in the train station when Lee and Clem were getting the blow torch. Who the hell (besides Lee) doesn't scream when their intestines are being pulled out?

I died during the zombie invasion and the bandits too a few times, the seem to sneak up behind me when I am busy with someone else. After a few attempts I got it.

only once in the train station before I figured out you had to go to the second option to pick up the wrench
  • edited August 2012
I did that exact thing in the train station.

Died once in the train station because I looked at the wrench instead of picking it up

This was the first episode I *didn't* die in. But Kenny beat my ass on the train despite my best efforts.

Freaking bandits got me like 6 times in a row.

Died once, in the train station. I thought we were supposed to go through the door, not pick up the wrench, and got my guts ripped out.

I only died during the motor inn raid, five times, due to the controls feeling wonky. :P That's it, though. :D

Once in the convenience store, once during the raid, and several times at the train station.

You tried to leave Clem behind? You bastard!

    Same!
After a while I even started punching both zombies waiting for clem to shoot...

I died 3 times in the trainstation because the controls wouldn't let me pick up the wrench.

The trainstation, PC version. Multiple times. Similar story to a lot of people here. Fortunately I pulled off the rest of the episode, before and after, flawlessly.

-Need to back off from zombies. I need to press W to back off from the zombies. I press S before letting the note sink into my thick skull. As if to press movement from the perspective the character was facing instead of the camera. "Woops, won't happen again."

-Round 2. See that the zombies are punchable. Thought it might be necessary with the assumption it might buy more time to reach the wrench. Had too much fun with it in the hopes Clem might get some target practice in. It really didn't buy much more time. "LOOK! At what these zombies can do with my intestines Clem! Are you seeing this? Do you want have a go!?! Because it's your turn next. I may even it do for you myself. If you worried about me cutting your f***ing hair, then you're in for a mother-f***ing treat! Seriously though! Why do I teach you f***ing anything! You're a sh** little girl! F***!"

-Next go. After rebuilding my composure I went straight to the wrench. Clicked it. "Yes, it's a wrench now F***ING PICK IT UP!" Turns out on the PC version, not only are the action icons represented in controller button positions on this rare occasion, but it's defaulted to clicking the "view" action on the wrench unless you mouse-wheel or press 2 instead.

-Attempt number 4. I know what I'm doing now. Didn't do it anyway. Brain fart. I made Lee take another check that it was infact a real wrench. "AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!"

-Number 5. Finally got it. Christina comes in. "You and a little girl handled all 3 of those on your own huh?". From outside of the game "WELL ACTUALLY SHE DIDN'T DO S***! SHE WAS JUST ENJOYING THE F***ING SHOW WHILE ZOMBIES PLAYED JUMP-ROPE WITH MY INTESTINES! OH AND DOES THIS LOOK LIKE A WRENCH TO YOU BECAUSE I'VE LOOKED AT IT SO MANY TIMES AND JESUS I'M STILL NOT CONVINCED!"

Ahem. Yeah looking through this thread, the keyboard/mouse working of that scene (some for movement, but otherwise purely due to the wrench) seemed like a moment of poor form from a developmental standpoint.

I'm also surprised at how many slipped with the bandits. It makes me wonder how many hairs I managed to make it by because it sounds like I did something difficult. I was never under the impression that I was in any real danger.

    P.S. It's more fun if I don't chill.

    Hah! Same here :P

I assumed that it would just let you pick it up right away but NOPE! You gotta switch to that command manually.

Same thing when I had to take the key from Clem through the bars... I took the keys first time, then looked at the lock, then looked at it again, swore at Lee to open the f***ing door and then managed to open it.

But then the zombie killed me anyway because my aim sucked.

Oh btw, does anyone know what happens if you wait too long at that section to take the keys? Does Clem shoot the zombie herself?

It was a too long sequence to watch so many times before succeeding... there should be a key to skip cutscenes, damn it.
  • edited August 2012
First try I only died twice at the Train Station. But then I went back and played on a different save and died twice at the Bandits, once on the alternative Duck zombie (Out of curiosity though), and think I got the train station perfect that time, though.
  • edited August 2012
The train station. First time I died in the Series. Twice with the wrench...and once because I didn't hit the hotspot perfectly against the walker you have to shoot. I skill clicked his head, but nooooo, not at the precise spot telltale wants it.

I really find that strange. In the sniper scenes you only have to aim somewhere...in the general direction of the head and it is a kill. Which is good, because is simply has not the fluid motions of a FPS. But in the QTE your aim has to be perfect. I do not get it at all.

I died a lot during the raid. I couldnt seem to line up my shots right and the third bandit kept shooting me. Then I played again with Doug and the zombies kept getting me because I had problems lining up the headshots. I blame myself because Im a terrible shot in every game I play, lol. The helicopter pilot got me a couple of times and the zombies in the train station. I think this episode was the most frustrated I got in terms of getting killed.

Didn't die even once until that pair. And I definitely bale poor game mechanics on that. From the very first time I went for the tool and I just couldn't pick it up. It took me a while until I did.

I died more in the raid than I died in the previous 2 episodes.

I got shot point blank in the head by the first bandit by taking too long to answer. The timer went so quick.

There was a specific spot that the bandits could get to on the right hand side of the RV that resulted in your death frequently. It was very frustrating.

Lastly I died twice in the Station. Once because I looked at the prying tool, the second time because I decided to punch one of the Walkers. Then I realised I had to walk backwards and get the pipe from the door. Which I couldn't understand. I thought removing the tool would make the room dark and I couldn't see what I was fighting.

EP3 had a lot of issues besides the sloppy narrative, faux choice and script.

In the train station :P, took me a while to figure it out to change options between look and take :O
  • edited August 2012
I died afew times during the bandit assult and then once at the station when I had to shoot the last walker. Just too slow. This episode seemed alot harder than the last two.
  • edited August 2012
count me for the Train station, about 6 times.... yeah, first walking wrong direction, then punshing to much then looking at the wrench. Waiting all the time for Clem to shoot. Why the hell i showed her how to do it?
  • edited August 2012
Died at the boarded up train station twice (I blame bad controls) and when the bandits raided the Motor Inn
  • edited August 2012
Same for me as many other posters... took several deaths before I figured out how to grab the wrench instead of just looking at it.
  • edited August 2012
died 6 times during the Bandit raid. and once during the train station battle vs the double team.
  • edited August 2012
lol, this makes me feel really bad.

I must have died easily 40 times in total!

When the bandit's raided, I kept looking for something to shoot, like a gas tank, or something that would block the Bandits from coming in. I just kept trying, thinking i'm missing something til I realized, just shoot them! proably died 20-25 times in total at this one scene!

I saved Doug, so when the zombies came in, I didnt have Carley helping, I had to do all the shooting myself.

The pilot zombie got me a few times because the target clicky thing was around his neck, but you have to move it lower to get the click option.

The zombie in the car at the train got me too.. just was a little slow moving the controller.

It took me 4 hours to finish this episode! I know I wasted alot of time just searching, second-guessing things. I made my game harder than it should have been but I call it giving TT credit for an excellent episode!

I (Lee) wouldnt know what to do in every new situation so I think it's realistic!

That damn car zombie killed me because I didn't realize I was supposed to slam his head in the door. I thought I was supposed to use one of the tools from the train on him. After a few times of not being able to get an option to pop up on his head I figured it out.
  • edited August 2012
Due to no inverting Y axis, which has been in every game since Quake 1, i died a million times in the shootout with the bandits. I go to aim up, i go to the ground. Try to aim down, im looking at the sky. Cannot get used to it.

Right.. and the LAST thing I wanted to do was release it from the seatbelt.. I spent more time running around the train, trying to get on the other side of the car where I could bash the zombie.
Finally I just figured I had no other option then i released it from the seatbelt.
    And yes it got me!
  • edited August 2012
Actually the car zombie got me cause I was waiting for him to show his head out of the car before slamming the door... turns out you have to slam it even if he's still inside to get the cutscene and not being killed XD

I died at least 10 times because the game forced me to use the 1,2,3,4 buttons to choose actions while I usually use the mouse wheel.

So yeah same moment same animation, I got pretty frustrated.
  • edited August 2012
Glad to see some others got caught by the car zombie. I knew I'd have to slam the door on his face (thank you Vinnie Jones in Lock Stock...) but I let it get too close.

I died a few times during the raid as I couldn't work out how to switch sides, that and I was stupidly going for shoot anywhere rather than head shots.

I then also died in the standoff with the bandits as I couldn't decide who to shoot first and I'm sure I died somewhere else.

I think there's only been one other time when you had to switch your cursor to interact with something and it was back in episode 1. I don't think it's a bad mechanic, but it's really inconsistent with what we've played in our recent memories. Maybe if it had happened twice in the last episode to remind us of the mechanic, fewer people would have had trouble.
  • edited August 2012
Wish I could think of an alternative way to saying the train station scene where you had to pick up the tool. Several times at least.

The shoot out scene with the bandits a couple of times. And once or twice when leaving the drug store.

    All too easy, no deaths..

The car near the train where the zombie's stuck with the security belt; I think I panicked...! And also once with the bandits; wasn't used to the gun's controls.
  • edited August 2012
I died a bunch in the bandit raid...and countless times in the train station. I noticed that there was a lot of lag time on my PC between the attack time and the time the hotspots were active. The controls are not at all keyboard/mouse intuitive...very frustrating. I eventually made it but it took a long long time.
