The Herd

edited September 2012 in The Walking Dead
If the train is drawing the herd of walkers to Savannah, couldn't Lee just put the train in reverse when they get there, then jump out, and draw the walkers back into the opposite direction?

    Yes.

I don't think they have any idea what a herd is.
  • edited September 2012
He could do that but then they would lose their safest mode of transportation.

The should, they barely escaped from the herd at the train station.

It might be the safest, but it's not very useful. It only goes from Macon to Savannah. I doubt they are planning to use the train again once they get to Savannah.

The know about a big fucking group of zombies, they just don't know it's called a herd :D
  • edited September 2012
No, there's a difference. The herd is not just a large group zombies.

It's a HUGE group of zombies that never stops moving. The first walker start walking at some direction and the other follow. More and more join long after the first walker has forgotten why he walked that way in the first place, but even he does it because the rest are.

They do not know about that. They probably think once they lose sight of them they'll just stop. The herd never stops!

Aye you're probably right. I was thinking that the train was a great way to travel in a large group safely because rail lines are everywhere. Surely they would have been able to connect to a larger line but I get your point.

how many zombies does it take to derail a train? lets find out :)

Savvanah looked almost untouched when we arrived. In fact, I had a fool's hope that it had somehow held out against the walkers and was secure. What happens when the herd hits Savvanah? That might be the cliffnager at the end of EP4 :P

They don't know how herds work, at least. I'd like one of them to think about it more.

Herd: one zombie hears something and follows it. It gathers more zombies moving in the same direction, no longer following a sound. Eventually a huge cluster forms. You fire a gun. Two thousand zombies turn as one and roam your way.
  • edited September 2012
I find it odd that a herd was following the train and caught up to it that quickly and if it wasn't originally following the train, you'd think the train would have gone through it on route.
  • edited September 2012
That herd could have been nearby or something. It likely didn't travel down the railway path for all of it's existence. Was prolly drawn by the commotion of our survivors
  • edited September 2012
So y'all are saying that this "herd" will continue following them no matter what even after loosing sight of them?
  • edited September 2012
I think if it hears another loud sound, they'll be off after that. Zombies have a short attention span, look at the walkers going after Lee in the episode. He is safe as soon as he jumps over the fence.
  • edited September 2012
Huh. The horde, plus the train, and so on. That actually makes sense as to why the gasoline tanker opted not to explode. That would have taken out a majority of the zombies. If that happened, what would they face at the end of episode five? :D

Unless the train tracks curved while out of hearing distance, that is the safest bet..

Was the map shown a straight path? If so, you've still got a herd gathering and headed for the coast. Even if there is a way to blow up that patch we saw, there's still gonna be another larger horde.

The group of zombies in episode 3 happened pretty quickly. I'd have to explain it as being a cluster that had been nearby and came to the stopped train. A herd is larger: http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100427045721/walkingdead/images/b/b0/Horde.jpg

Very interesting point OP. I think it would be a good idea for them to do that. But it most likely gets derailed since there is a shitload of Zombies. Although they might need the train just in case so what would be the point?

The group don't know how a herd really works so I doubt they will do that. I think it will be awesome since they have to do whatever they are doing fast as possible because a herd of zombies is heading to Savanna. Which will make the decision of finding Clem's parents/Getting to safety will have a huge impact. Episode 4 has SO much potential. They can go so ways with it. I hope they choose the right one. Keep up the amazing work TellTale!

    *Herd.
    It's the same actually.

Oh, And yeah. The herd will probably find them in Savannah... The entire episode was confusing, Since the death of carley till now... I feel like I'm in an never ending story. ._.

My Lee is fortunate enough to make the train go forward, don't make him try to find the reverse switches.

Kenny's boat is in Fort Lauderdale, in Florida. I guess he decided that going all that way across zombie-infested country with the possibility of finding that some other desperate survivor had stolen it while he was on the road was too much of a risk and the plan changed to getting to the coast as quickly as he could and taking the first boat he could.

yeah getting a boat would be like getting a car, go somewhere you think there should be cars/boats and hope there is one

not them, per se, but in that general direction

I hate the term Herd. A herd is a defense against predators. If anything it should be a Horde, Scourge, Pack, and or Pride. I would go with either Horde or Scourge... A Scourge of walkers sounds much better.

Argue with Kirkman then. Remember, we're in the south and people call things according to their background, not yours.
  • edited September 2012
Okay, so if a herd is like thousands, what do you can a smaller grouping? A murder, a sloth, a troop, a gaggle of zombies?
  • edited September 2012
a gaggle of walkers has quite a nice ring to it...kinda takes the edge of off the situation

Argue with Kirkman about what. I didn't know that in the south predators moved in herds...

Why is it so important? I don't care what they call them lol

I corrected Motordead originally, who thought we meant to say horde. In the comic, a huge group of zombies is a herd. I stick with terminology when talking about an established universe. Sure, you can call a lightsaber a "glowy thingy", but everyone's going to correct you.

I think there's a rule to the classification. A single zombie is a walker. Two zombies are a stroll. Six zombies are a moan. 20 are a gaggle. Hundreds are a refinement. Thousands are a herd. Millions are a Romero.
