So many spoiler tags. Why?

edited October 2012 in The Walking Dead
Seriously, what is not a spoiler?

How do you talk about a game in any meaningful way without spoiling it?

It just seems like such an arrogant sense of entitlement that a person would go to a forum that does nothing but talk about the game and expect people not to talk about it.

And it makes no sense because depending on how much you've played, if you've played at all, anything can be a spoiler. What is a spoiler for one person may not be for the next.

In this game, because of the choices (I know what you're thinking and save it for another thread) even people that played the same episode can have things spoiled.

The episodes come out months apart so what could you be dying to talk about afters months of discussion and just can't avoid the forums until you've played the latest episode?

Seriously, what is the bright line? Just mentioning anything in ep 1 is a spoiler if you've never played the game.

I just can't wrap my head around this. Is there a time limit? It's a spoiler for 2 weeks after the last release? I mean, how does it work? I just don't get it.

Personally, I everything should be considered a spoiler so therefore people should avoid the forum if they don't want anything spoiled. Seriously.

Maybe it would help people who came on looking for technical support? So they knew which threads to avert their eyes and cursors from. Especially since this forum shows you the first few sentences in the thread.

There is a whole forum dedicated to tech support. This forum is the wrong place.

And even in tech support, it's all about spoilers. "There's a glitch when Duck disappears."

I think what you're mentioning is more a problem with literacy and paying attention than anything else. I'm not sure spoiler tags will help them.

I think it's just polite to warn people, it's not hard to do and doesn't really impact those of us that have finished the game.

Someone is bound to come on here for a legitimate reason without having finished the game. Maybe they just want to read about episode one or two. Who knows?

The point is that it's just the polite thing to do, it doesn't hurt anybody else so why not?

I didnt know Ep3 got released and saw all these spoilers threads...just closed the browser and checked steam...2hrs later I was all caught up

"Maybe they just want to read about episode one or two." Wow. Really? That's your example? You have to know how bad that is yourself.

This is not a victimless crime. You don't know how bad it hurts my brain to think about how senseless the whole practice is.

I mean, just what threads get "spoiler tags" and what threads don't doesn't make any kind of sense.

I don't see it as polite. It's just pandering to people with no common sense and a crazy sense of entitlement. And the whole system is so hopelessly arbitrary it has no practical use.

It's a common courtesy. It's the same reason I spoiler almost everything about the comics if they're brought up. Also, the European PS3 guys hadn't even got the game until very recently, if they've even received it. Coming here to find information from TTG should be expected.

I also came here after the release before playing. I had lost all my saves and after fixing the problems with my installation, I still couldn't use my old saves. I made a thread asking if anyone could share their saves.

Again, it's just common courtesy. If the board were dedicated strictly to story discussions only, I'd probably agree with you.

Edit: It's really not that difficult to add (SPOILERS) to your thread's title or use {spoiler}{/spoiler} (changing { to [ obviously)

    Ok this is why.

I came back to the forums today for the first time in two months to see if there was a release date for Episode 3 on iOS (yes I realise Ep2 only just came out last week but I wanna continue goddamnit).

Scrolling down the titles I saw that 1 character has been killed off, and another is sick.

If these had spoiler tags I wouldn't have paid attention. I now see that one the offending threads has been moderated to not give anything away in title.

So if I can't come to the TTG forums to find out when one of their titles might be released for fear of spoilers where can I go?

Sorry, I got spoiled to all hell too. Can you just keep trying to download it and stay off the forum? There's probably more surprises in store.

I think spoilers are the least of your worries.

Using the tech support forum where others were missing their saves as I was seems counter intuitive, no? I had already used the technical help boards to fix my problem, if you had even bothered to read. I had also checked the Hints and Help board which was basically the technical help board. This board has used spoilers for the first week or two of a release since I joined these forums, and knew I'd be okay to make a thread. Especially considering that I'd read the post from Vain concerning making threads after the release.

I know you've got massive amounts of sand in your vajajay at the moment over this, but it's really not difficult to use (SPOILER) and [.spoiler][./spoiler]. Asking for a save file wasn't a tech problem. It's also pretty normal for the PS3 guys to come here to see if TTG has release info about their delayed release.

Also, stop throwing around the word "entitled". Spoilering topics shortly after an episodes release has been a common practice since I joined these forums. It is absolutely common courtesy. You're either lazy or you just need something to bitch about to the pass the time.

If it's really bothering you, how about messaging the mods and asking them to revoke the practice?

I only ever go to the "Release Date Guessing Game" if I don't want to be spoiled. I don't scroll down, I look at nothing and read nothing - just that one thread. I did that for all episodes, and there weren't many problems for me on that front.

So, as to your question as why there are "Spoiler" tags, you may have a point there - but I reckon it's just a precaution, just in case unsuspecting forum members were to scroll down by accident and read / see something they shouldn't.

I did it once by accident (wasn't careful enough), when there was a thread that wanted to kill Ben - and it was then I KNEW he was the one who stole the meds. Tough luck for me, I know, but a spoiler tag would have been nice that point in time.

Ok, there is a random generator. Why didn't you use that?

Since I have "massive amounts of sand in your vajajay at the moment" and am "lazy or just need something to bitch about to pass the time," it makes sense to listen to you! You seem so mature, smart and articulate. And your problem solving skills are out of this world! It's clear to me right now you're right about everything! Go you! ;)

Yeah, it's counter in b/c why talk to people who have the same problem when you can talk to people who haven't experienced it all! :) I'm sorry I didn't pick up on that. It makes sense. We should take it further, asking men what it's like to be a woman, or rich people what it's like to be poor. It just seems more intuitive!

I needed a save file. There were others that were missing their saves as well. I'm not going to get a save file by asking for them from those without save files. I hope I've simplified it enough for you to grasp.

I responded to you harshly because you implied I lack common sense and that I feel I'm entitled to not be spoiled when coming to these boards. I know very well that I run the risk of being spoiled by coming here and making a thread the way I did. With this communities' past history as well as the notification from the mods pre-release I didn't feel it was a concern.

You've honestly got no room to talk about being rude in this thread. I'm sorry if I offended you, but yeah.

EDIT: I didn't use the random save generator because I felt it lacked enough information about all of the choices made through the first two episodes. I actually had an awesomely helpful poster hook me up with a save file that was near identical to my main playthrough.

If I were you, I'd be more concerned about that buzzing sound you've been trying to dismiss since the beginning of the conversation. Yes, now you hear it. Those are INDEED helicopters, Mr. Panda. Warbirds might be a better moniker, however. Do you still worry about spoilers? Can you even THINK through this blind panic? No need to run, they will be here in seconds. I mean it makes perfect sense that nobody on the tech forums has a working save file. I hope I've simplified it enough for you to grasp.
