After reading the Comics....

edited September 2012 in The Walking Dead
WOW! I just started reading the comics and I must say....I AM HOOKED! It's much much darker....I started with the TV show...then the game...then comics...( wrong order ) but then now I know the depths of the walking dead series....

Now after reading the comics I must say...the death of Carley isn't shocking at all...in fact I must agree with others that her death was actually the most comforting way to go without suffering.

I just can't wait to finish the comics! but somehow it feels like......the game isn't as dark as the original series....what do you guys think?

I definitely recommend people to read the comic if you haven't!!! I hope SEASON 2 gets more gruesome...darker and more shocking!!!!

I would relish reading the comics while you can because you will catch up to the current issue quickly. But yes the comics are definitely better.

I like it until the prison arc comes to a close. I don't like the second half. I just think the story peaks early.

The comics are fantastic. I agree the most recent arcs have not been AS strong (haven't read the newest one yet though), but that's not to say they are bad (although the stuff with Rick's preachy speech on building the new community was certainly the lowest point). And yes, the comics are MUCH darker than the game and especially the show. It's not afraid to make unpopular choices and it manages to make them pay off more often than not. Being dark does not always mean bad writing. Sometimes bad things happen.

Telltale is promising things to get darker too so I doubt we have seen the last of the shocking moments yet.

I thought the comics were great all the way through, so far at least.

I did the same thing, started reading about 3 weeks ago. I'm already at issue 96 lol.

I finished catching up with #101 last night. I've never really read comics before except the odd few when I was younger, but holy crap they were amazing. The show and the game are cakewalks in comparison to the comic books. I even had to set the books down and take a break to comprehend some of the stuff that goes down.

In a way, reading the comics has raised the bar for me. The game and the show are going to have to pull something really special out of the bag to surprise me now!

I think the TV show is going to pull something out of the bag for Season 3. As we keep hearing it is their own story that is similar to the comics but it looks like it will get darker really fast with the return of Merle Dixon.

And I also think Season 2 of the game will get darker too. Reason being is that the game is set in the same world as the comics and they got dark pretty quickly. The game seems to be slowly drawing us in before the dark stuff hits us.

I think the video game is darker than the tv show, and the comic sets the bar for everyone. Personally I take each as a slightly different flavor of the TWD universe; and it need not be the same ... there's enough twist to go around I say.

Season 3 we have the intro of the Gov, the biggest bad-ass yet to hit the series. Life in the prison and Michonne's background...and of course the usual twists that they'll put in.

I started with the show, then the comics, and then the game. Tbh, I hate the comics, the show is great, and the game is just awesome. You can't really develop personal "favorite" characters amongst the group in the comic books. Kirkman doesn't care about who he kills. Doug/Carley dying and everyone hates TT? Oh no, no, no. Wait till you read the comics.

Those as well which is why I think Season 3 will be the darkest one yet. A bad thing about Season 2 was the true beginning of Season 2 was cut with Rick's group going back to the retirement home in Atlanta before leaving to find them ether dead or now Walkers.

Maybe you are not a comic book reader then but I found it very easy to develop attachments to favorite characters in the comics. Plus the comics are how TWD truly is. As much as I like the TV show that is a walk in the park compared to the comics and is better too.

It's not that, no. I just can't find it how you can love a character, and have them die in a couple issues. Repeatedly. I can't force myself to like Michonne any longer. After what Kirkman pulled off in issue 100, I gave up the comics.

It comes with TWD though. The fact that any of them get past even one issue is a good thing but you can not just expect them to just stay alive in a Zombie Apocalypse, that is just silly. They are all going to die eventually. The only one that is even remotely safe in the comics is Rick but as soon as it reaches 300/301 he will be just as expendable as everyone else.

And to be honest I find it silly as well when people stop watching a show or reading a series or playing a game series when one of their favorite characters gets killed off. One character does not make a series/show/book/game/movie/game. No offense.

I know what you mean...the only character that is pretty much secure for a long time is Rick. Tbh, I don't like him. At all.

    I loved Carl's monologue in volume 9.

Carl: You can't protect (insert name of dead character)!

Yeah, Rick can't prevent anyone's death.

After watching him slowly turn into the Governor in later issues, he lets everyone die around him. Carl is much more likable, imo. He is disappointed almost every time Rick fails. He is starting to handle things. Took a peek at the cover of issue 104. This kid is badass.

I am up to date lol but I have know Carl was going to become a bad ass for a while now. Plus it looks like it will be Carl taking over from Rick.

Just thinking about the show and The Governor, I wonder when and how they'll implement Negan into the TV show. It won't be for a few seasons, surely, but it's an exciting prospect.

Considering the atrocity that he has brought to the group already, I think he might even eclipse The Governor as biggest antagonist so far. That bloody smile on his face as well. It was haunting.

I really don't like Rick either.

Do you guys think Rick will actually beat Negan, or the walkers will interfere and everyone just tries to get out?

I mean, Rick didn't kill the Governor.

And I have no idea how to do spoiler tags so... :p

Which is why I think Season 2 will get as dark as the comics. Season 1 is probably like this because most who are playing it have never read the comics so they are slowly drawing them in and better prepare them for all the dark stuff coming in Season 2.

I hope he does but honestly i think
Negan might actually kill Rick, Kirkman has said before even Rick isn't safe from death

Rick is safe for 300 issues since that is what the comics are about. After 300 issues Rick is just as expendable unless Kirkman has changed his mind in that case it sucks.

The game isn't as dark, but its getting closer. There was a ramping up in the comic to account for though. I don't think it got that bad until Woodbury, which was its third arc. If we follow these survivors for much longer, we'll get to the really bad stuff in time.

Agreed. It is slowly drawing us into the darker stuff

For some reason Lee should be more like Tyreese...hahaha the mean version of Lee....if only we could be more like Tyreese or Abraham i wouldnt mind being mean and bad arse! haha

I started with the show, then the comics, and lastly the game. I didn't like the show too terribly much to begin with, and now I absolutely hate it. The only reason I have kept up with the show is to see their twists, and I like comparing it to the comic series. The show just makes all of our lovable characters extremely unlovable... and it is developing rather slowly. I am hoping Season 3 changes my mind.

Anyway, back on topic- the comics are fantastic!! I am up to date on them, and the only extremely disappointing issue for me was issue 100. I am a little iffy now on continuing to read them, but I love TWD too much to just give up. I think RK will make up for everything.

The game is also wonderful, especially since it ties into the comics so much. Do you understand the significance of Lilly yet? :P
  • edited September 2012
Oh hell yeah...Lily wasn't there much in the comics..rarely at all but made one of the biggest impacts! The deaths in the walking dead....if the whole series was the game somehow...i don't even want to imagine the threads on people complaining their deaths...i mean we just had Carley/Doug, Katcha and Duck's death and look at the forum lol

He's gone pretty insane in later issues. His son is more likeable, but he's pretty nuts too.

Yep...i liked Rick in the beginning because since i first watched the show reminded me of him...but later on........he sure went nuts...and his son..i never really liked Carl....and became a nut job too so i dislike them both....

The only characters i really like are Andrea...Tyreesse....Michone and Abraham.
I could care rest about the rest lol except Glenn....i'm really devastated how he died...he didn't deserve that really

I started with the show first and then the comics and the game. I love the show and the game. I like the comic and have read up to about issue 50 or 60. The problem I have with the comic thought is it is kind of repetitive. It seems like the same things keep happening over and over again just with a new set or antagonists. My favorite comics make me want to collect them and read them over and over and I didnt feel that so much with this one. The game is actually what is helping me get through the hiatus until season 3 of the show.
  • edited September 2012
Yeah i understand that it gets repetitive a bit...but after reading the comics i was thinking to myself...if zombie apocalypse really happened and you somehow manage to survive for such a long period of time....how you could pull your life together....

Somehow I wouldn't want to live in a world like that in the long run...just my .2 cents

I think that kirkman is gonna kill Rick at the end of this volume, so you can restart reading with a brand new main character (probably carl)

I think CArl will be pure sociopath as he gets older. He's so black and white with his emotions, it takes maturity to understand the shades of grey in between. He'll be a survivor but I dont think he'll be liked much

I hope she never does. She is a sweet kid and I wouldnt want that to change. Carl scares me a little.
