I've done far larger mods for a game that actually forbade to do it. We made it public and you know what happened?
The lead artist wrote us a mail, saying: "Great work, looking forward for more."
I think OP did a good job there, was actually looking into the models myself, but too busy to actually get anywhere. Keep it up, if only for yourself.
