Sam & Max Season 1+2
I bought the complete S&M pack on Steam last week and couldn't run any of the episodes in Season 1 and 2. When trying the executable stopped working (sammax101.exe stopped working).

I have tried reinstalling my graphics driver, audio drivers, DirectX (even an older version), Steam and the game and tried to verify the data integrity through Steam. No luck. I also tried downloading an old DirectX redist and finding the d3d8.dll manually and copying it to System32.
Again, no luck.
I am running Win7 64bit with i7 3770K CPU, 16GB RAM and a HD6970 graphics card.
Any help would be much appreciated as so far it's been money out the window
(I also opened a ticket at Steam support last weekend and they responded at all)

Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.
Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.
Open the file and press Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+C to copy the contents, and paste them in a reply by pressing CTRL-V.

- Running the game as administrator and/or in some compatibility mode (e.g. Windows XP)
- Running the game during a clean boot
Booting clean in Windows Vista / 7:
1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
3. Uncheck Load Startup Items
4. Select the Services tab
5. Check Hide all Microsoft services
6. Click Disable all
7. If running the game on Steam, re-check the "Steam Client Service"
8. Click on OK
9. Click Restart.
10. After reboot, run the game to see if it works.
After performing the necessary steps, restore your settings by doing the following:
1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
3. Click Ok
4. Click Yes, when asked to restart your computer
Still no go. According to the log in my first post though, it is trying to use the d3d8.dll, which is not on my computer. I'm thinking that is in some way a problem? Either that the game won't run without DirectX 8 or that my computer doesn't have it?
I don't have a d3d8.dll either in that location on my Win7 64 bit, but in C:\Windows\SysWOW64. That's actually where 32 bit versions of DLLs are stored, and accesses to system32 for 32-bit applications are automatically forwarded to SysWOW64. So you should be fine if it's there.
I think the error rather implies that the game has a problem initializing Direct 3D.
You can try if replacing the prefs.prop helps.
You could also try if the demo works to see if it's an issue with the steam version.
I can't change the graphics quality to high, but at this point I'll be happy with what I can get.
Do you or anyone at TTG know what this is about? It seems more like a workaround than a fix.

-In case anyone with the same problem in Steam stumbles upon this, the pref.prop goes in
..\Steam\steamapps\common\ the folder for the episode (Sam and Max Episode 1). Not documents folder as mentioned in the other thread.
