Ben's stupidity saved the group.
Thanks to a bug, I was forced to replay episodes 1 to 3 before tackling number 4.
This, while annoying at the time, allowed me to view the episodes back to back and pick up on things I missed before.
In episode 2, the RV wasn't ready... but in episode 3 it was....
The time between those episodes, Ben had delayed the bandits with his secret deal....
So while an argument might be made that he was responsible for the attack.....if he hadn't done what he did.. they might have attacked before the RV was ready and the casualties might have been higher... or all of them.
So as much as it pains me to say it... I think the kid may have saved the group. (even if it was accidentally)

But yes, I've pointed out and realized this before. His fuck up might of been bad, but it could of been even worse if he didn't fuck up.
The funny thing is, I "was" one of the people who hated on Ben for killing the group..... I feel rather foolish now.
All of those people just saying he was only a dumb kid.... I have to admit, they were right.
Knowing him, if he'd tried to do that he would have accidentally poisoned the group.
Have you ever known a scared kid to fess up to anything?
He was on the watch when the bandits attacked. Even though he was on top of the RV with a rifle and a scope on it, he didn’t shoot and got rounded up like the others.
True, lol.
It would have been hard for him to admit to Lee that Clementine died because of him improperly swapping drugs.
Ofcourse he was scared, everyone would be scared in zombie apocalipse. But more than that he was plainly stupid.
That's a major stretch to say he "saved" the group. True that the Rv wasn't ready. But had he told the group what was going on after the first deal. They likely could have prolonged the arrangement clandestinely until they could either leave the Motor Inn or mount an organized attack on the bandits.
He by no means saved the group. He really just let the whole group get blind sighted cause they thought the bandits were far away and unaware of their presence. Either way he fuck up. That shit is unforgivable.
Is Ben "just" a well-meaning but scared and dumb as bricks kid? Yes, and in the real world he would be fine. In the ZA though, he's not, and Lee should've told him to leave a long time ago.
Lol this is absurd. How Lee was supposed to know about Ben's intentions? Oh, was so obvious that someone was making an agreement with the bandits, let me left the medicine there
Knowing Ben he's too kind to even think of trying that.
Well..that's pretty far-fetched.
First of all, Ben should have told the group about them in the first place, so all of them would have been aware of the situation and could have negotiated (or otherwise dealt) with the bandits in a far better position. Lee's group had the fortified place, the medicine, the food and guns - the bandits had nothing except guns.
Lee then took the package, because..hell, he didn't even know what it was meant for. He just took back what belonged to the group anyways. The fact that the bandits attacked minutes later was pretty unrealistic, if you ask me - it was pretty safe to assume that taking the supplies wouldn't instantly cause any kind of trouble.
And by the way: Ben was on watch when Lee found the supplies, right? Thus he must have seen Lee coming back with the bag and could have stopped him since he knew what they were meant to be for.
But he didn't. And he didn't warn the others when the bandits approached the Motor Inn shortly after. Thus, it's still all Ben's fault. QED.
I am going to explain everything here that I feel is wrong, and give you reasons why Ben did what he did, Ben was new to the group, Lilly was storming around the Inn screaming at Kenny and Kenny right back, and honestly it was justified because of what Kenny did and I don't get how Clementine wasn't feeling the tension from how out of control it was getting, so I can't really blame him for keeping it secret, him making the deal probably saved a life or two, that was alot of arrows and bulletholes in the walls. The moment Ben would have yelled/shot they could have killed any of the people they would have in their sights already, Ben did the right thing by not yelling/shooting.
As for the bandits attacking so fast, let me explain this, That Chalk X on the wall you found was a signal that the deal was ready, the bandits came over to get the bag after seeing the X, it wasn't there, they assumed Ben and the group were holding out on them and attacked, Also I'm pretty sure that Ben saw the bandits approaching the bag and let them thinking it was there, then they attacked after they saw it wasn't there, I can only assume Ben dropped his gun and approached the bandits, which I think was the right call considering they had hostages.
Honestly I think Ben not reacting at all to Lee's snooping and carrying the bag back was just a oversight. Ben acknowledges all of this as a big screw-up and it was obviously killing him by guilt so...
Didn't Ben ever study history? The cover-up is always worse than the scandal. Just fess up, you'll take some crap for it, but probably not a bullet in the head. Once you hide it, all bets are off.
I agree, but he didn't 'want' carley/doug to get shot in his place.
Actually, yeah, that was really obvious.
HAA, it takes a lot of courage to hide behind a woman.
this is Ben.
