The difference is, they applied a tourniquet and hacked off Hershel's (or Dale's, in the comic) leg right away. Unless Lee had done it within minutes of being bitten, it probably wouldn't work.

We still don't know if it will work for Hershel.

    ^this

Amputating a limb isn't exactly something you just shrug off Monty Python Black Knight style. There's so many problems that could befall Hershel in the coming episodes.

Also, it didn't work too well for Bens teacher in ep 2.

True. I'm just assuming they're giving him Dale's storyline from the comics.

If he was bit or not matters little.

You HACK OFF HIS LEG and then he BLEEDS TO DEATH :p

Bite or no, losing a leg is going to be traumatic... and most likely fatal if you don't know how to stop the bleeding/deal with the injury.

Not really Dale's though. I guess if he survives yes, but the way in which he was bit, how it happened and the subsequent frantic act of Rick desperately hacking off his leg without really thinking was almost a panel by panel reenacting of what happened to Allen when they were clearing out the prison, not Dale.

Fun fact on that, that exact story where Allen was bitten in the leg in the prison was originally SUPPOSED to be Hershel, but Robert Kirkman changed it because he decided he had already done enough horrible things to Hershel, what with killing pretty much his entire family. He later regretted it because he really liked Allen.

I digress. It's likely that they never even considered it. To their knowledge, a bite is a bite. It's death, and they may not have even had the thought that if they cut off the limb in time they might be able to stop the spread.

Even if they had thought of that, I don't really think Lee would have agreed with it. His concern was finding Clementine. If they chopped off part of his arm, he is out of action for at least a few days. They'd have to spend some time cleaning and cauterizing the would to stop the blood flow. Lee's concern was getting to Clem. He wouldn't have agreed if it meant sacrificing Clementine.

In Day of the Dead (Romero's universe), they cut off that one guy's arm and cauterized the wound near instantly. He survived.... sort of. Until he let all of the zombie into the camp, that is.

Hershel might be okay virus-wise because they cut it off quickly. He is still in a very dirty and death filled place. Unless they get into the infirmary soon, he could still die from a regular old infection.

This never was a choice for Lee, and I think TTG should have put that in there. It would have been a nice story arc to see Lee fighting for Clementine one-handed and weak from blood loss. At lest it would have given him a fighting chance.
