Sam&Max Season3 memory address problem

edited October 2012 in Game Support
Hi!

I'm trying to run Sam&Max: The Devil's Playhouse on a not-so-decent PC, but I can't.
Whenever I try to start an episode, the picture with Max's head and flames around it appears and then Windows gives me the following error message:
"The instruction at 0x006ca1cc referenced memory at 0x0000006c.
The memory could not be read." (...)

Information about the PC:
OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional 32-bit Service Pack 2
CPU: AMD Sempron 2600+ (core speed: 1839.7 MHz, bus speed 167.3 MHz x11.0)
RAM: 768MB (1 x 512MB + 1 x 256MB)
Motherboard: ASROCK K7S8X. (Socket-A)
Graphics: LG T710B (1024x768@70Hz) monitor, 128MB GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X

Yeah, I know it's running a bit short on RAM and CPU, but what's the actual problem? Do I need more RAM or a better CPU?

Thanks for your help!

There are many things that could be problematic with this system.

I don't have experience with the specific error message, but there are some tips here.
I would try "Method 1 – Increase Virtual Memory", and do a clean boot, to get rid of programs running in the background taking up memory. See if you get any further with that.

Running Windows updates could also get you a bit further. Also make sure you are running the latest drivers.

Your graphics card is definitely another problem, because it is only DirectX 7.0 compliant, while S&MS3 requires DirectX 8.1 Compliance. Without a newer graphics card it is very unlikely to run, even if you get past the memory issue. You will probably end up with a "Could not initialize Direct3D" error message at best.

    Booting clean in Windows XP:
    1. Click Start --> Run --> Type msconfig --> Click OK
    2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
    3. Uncheck Process SYSTEM.INI file
    4. Uncheck Process WIN.INI file
    5. Uncheck Load Startup Items
    6. Click on the Services tab
    7. At the bottom, check Hide All Microsoft Services
    8. Click Disable All
    9. If running the game on Steam, re-check the "Steam Client Service"
    10. Click OK
    11. Click Restart
    12. After reboot, run the game to see if it works.

After performing the necessary steps, restore your settings by doing the following:

    1. Click Start --> Run --> Type msconfig--> Click OK
    2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
    3. Click OK
    4. Click YES, when asked to restart your computer

Thanks for the quick reply! I will try increasing virtual memory.

Just one thing: I don't where you got those information about my graphics card, but I'm pretty sure it does support DX9. :)

My first stop for graphics cards specs is usually GPUReview, but you can find many sources reporting the same.

Someone else had a similar problem with the same graphics card. He didn't report the error message, but the rest looks familiar.

Keep in mind, that the graphics chip is 10 Years old by now, and there hasn't been a new driver since 2006.

If you really want to try to get it running on this system my best suggestion for a cheap solution is:
Ask people you know if they still have an AGP 8x card that is 8 years or less you could try (Geforce 6 or later, Radeon X1xxx, HDxxxx or later).
A bit more memory would not hurt either.

If you want me to take a deeper look, you can post your dxdiag info.

    dxdiag
Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.

Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

Open the file and press Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+C to copy the contents, and paste them in a reply by pressing CTRL-V.
Sometimes the Forums spam filter catches long posts like this. Don't worry, we can still see them and make them visible.

I would highly appriciate it if you could tell me what kind of features should a graphic card have to run S&M S3, eg.: which version of Pixel Shader is needed.

Also, if I anyone could play S&M Season 3 with a Nvidia 6200 or a ATi Radeon HD3450 please reply. (Because I could get one of those quite cheaply, and they are AGP.) :)

I don't know the details about the required features, but i think the game should at least work on both of them, if nothing else is wrong. I can't tell you how the performance will be though. You might have to turn down graphics quality and resolution a lot, because they are both quite slow, and it might still lag. The Radeon 3450 is the newer one though. I really recommend buying it at a place where you can get a refund if it doesn't work as expected.

There's also that old sound driver, which could cause problems as well.

Playing on an up to date computer would be a much better solution.
