Sam and Max Season 3 - Won't load on Windows 8

edited November 2012 in Game Support
Hey guys, just wondering if there is any way to get Sam and Max: The Devils Playhouse to work at all on Windows 8? I just upgraded from Windows 7 on the same computer and it worked fine under Windows 7 with exactly the same hardware. On Windows 8 it tries to load for a few seconds and then the process cancels itself in the Task Manager without any error. I've tried running as admin, all the compatability modes and i'm really running out of ideas :( I love the Sam and Max games and wanna keep playing...

Any help would be appreciated so much!

(Specs just in case:

Windows 8 64bit
16GB DDR3 RAM
AMD FX8150
GeForce GTX 670
Intergrated Realtek Sound)

I just ran a quick test of the first episode in my fresh Win8 64bit VM, and it worked without any problem. I used the TTG Download version.

Do you have any USB devices you could unplug to see if that makes a difference?

Hmm... i'm using the retail version so maybe it's a problem with the DVD copy? I'll download a demo and see if that loads... only USB devices I have plugged in is my Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard wireless thing.

Oh and I forgot to mention, when I try Windows XP compatibility mode it instantly says 'SamMAx301 has encountered an error'

Do you have LUA installed by any chance?
Could you run another test with the Tales of Monkey Island demo?

Sorry, but I have no idea what LUA is. Could you please explain? And i'll try another demo, but it might take a while, my ISP messed up and my speeds gone down massivly until they fix it :(

Also if it's important at all, the launcher for the DVD doesn't work either.

Lua is a programming language. Installing it can cause trouble like this with some of TTGs games, due to an environment variable. Since you don't have it, don't worry about it.

I don't think the DVD launcher matters much. Since the Demo didn't work, something on your system doesn't like the game.

I think it's time to look at your system a bit closer. Could you please post your dxdiag info?

    dxdiag
Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.
Windows 8: At the start screen, type in "dxdiag" and hit enter

Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

Open the file and press Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+C to copy the contents, and paste them in a reply by pressing CTRL-V.
Sometimes the Forums spam filter catches long posts like this. Don't worry, we can still see them and make them visible.

Ok, just tried again on my Windows 7 partition and it works perfectly fine. There's something up with my hardware and Windows 8 not liking each other. Dxdiag coming in a minute, gotta boot up Windows 8 and reinstall.

Device Name: Controller (Wireless Gamepad F710)
    Attached: 1
    Controller ID: 0x0
    Vendor/Product ID: 0x046D, 0xC21F

I would try installing the latest Realtek High Definition Audio Driver.
Unplugging/Disabling the Gamepad is also worth a try.

Event Viewer suggest that the error is related to DINPUT8.DLL

    Anyone have ideas?

EDIT: Last time I unplugged the controller, it crashed straight away again. This time it worked! Thanks for suggesting that DjNDB now that it worked! :D

Thanks for the update. That's good to know.

Some people have worked around that by copying a different version of DINPUT8.DLL into the games install location.
It's absolutely unofficial, and the DLL source is questionable. You might be able to find the same DLL in the same version (6.1.7600.16385) on your Windows 7 system though.
You'll need the 32 Bit DLL since S&M is a 32 Bit application. You should find it in the folder %SystemRoot%\SysWOW64

I'm way too paranoid to try that right now, haha my old computer got BSoDs related to .dll errors after replacing some that were glitchy I don't wanna go through that again, even if it does work in the long run :/ thanks for suggestion it though.
