I need some help

I use photoshop at home, but at work we don't have any decent graphics software.
We could arrange to buy Photoshop at work but it would be fairly expensive for the amount of use it gets.
All I need to be able to do is crop images using something like the straightline lasso tool in photoshop, and maybe add a few effects.
Is there anything free available that would do this?

http://www.gimp.org/ should be okay. It's a lot more awkward UI-wise than Photoshop, but it does stuff and is free.

Also, I don't know what Paint Shop Pro costs these days since Jasc got bought out by Corel, but I dare say it's a lot cheaper than photoshop (and more intuitive than Gimp).

Me, I couldn't do without Paint Shop Pro 6, which I think is the 'classic version' (they're up to v. 10 or 11 now I think) and I'm a professional Graphic Designer...

I think there's usually a 30 or 60 day trial with Paint Shop Pro too if you need to give it a go...

Not the best strategy I've seen.


Better ones are to ask a question and then wait a couple days and post a reply to your post that answers itself by advocating a particular product.

I also saw a particularly devilish one that stole and replicated another person's reply to the thread, then had a spam signature. Made it seem quite human until you looked closely at the rest of the thread.
