Which survivor has suffered the most?

edited November 2012 in The Walking Dead
Which group member or survivor had suffered the most during the apocalypse in season 1?

Personally, I'd say either Clem or Ben. Clem lost her parents and Lee in the entirety of one day. Walking by herself to the countryside while being tearful didn't help either. Ben never got to see his family, and had always been the brunt of accusations. He never got to redeem himself.

Kenny lost his son (saw him slowly melt away and maybe even shot him himself), lost is wife (that just abandoned him out of the blue), got shot himself, had to live with the fact that he didn't save that farmers boy, had to kill a man with a stone and seeing the daughter cry and scream about it (the same daugther that later kills someone else, while he doesn't want to be part of the conversation), maybe killed that other starved zombieboy after losing his own child, he ate the flesh of another man, wished Ben dead and then saw how unfair this is, couldn't save him and then was eaten by zombies.

Clem did lose a lot and she is a child, I am sure she suffered a lot in the game. But she always had something to hold on to and never had to deal with injuries (or death). She had Lee, the hope for Omid/Christa, her radio with the stranger to talk to, the thought of her parents.. maybe in her life she will suffer more than Kenny did in his but if you take only the things in the series, then Kenny suffered a lot more than she did.

Clem. In terms of material losses everyone is about equal but Clem lost her innocence on top of everything else.

I don't sympathize with Ben at all but I would say that Ben did. He lost as much as everyone else except that he also lost his own self respect and if he ever had confidence it was certainly gone by the end.

Clem is still no. 1 for me, but Ben would be my second choice because of that. On top of that he doesn't even have anyone in the group, so he's basically just sitting in a corner by himself while everyone else has persons that care for them. Must be hard not having anyone to talk in a situation like this while constantly being offended. Maybe he would have been more useful if he wasn't by himself all the time.

Whereas every character suffered some form of loss the only character's whose loss had to be shouldered entirely by them was Lee and Ben. In Lee's case he still had his self respect and people who cared for him and though he didn't really open up to anyone in any meaningful sense he died afraid but feeling fulfilled.

In Ben's case, though an unlikely person tried to help him in the end, he was entirely unloved by those around him and based on the way his buddy spoke to him in Episode 2 I'm willing to bet he's never had any respect. His only supporter was Clementine and only really out of a childhood fear of seeing violence done. Clementine's pain was very obvious and very powerful but Ben's pain was prolonged, inflicted by those he desired to feel a sense of belonging with, and final.

Even in his final moments he was put out of his misery which, while it was a noble deed for the one that did it, shows that it was done out of pity rather than respect based on the language and body language of those involved.

Ben. Hands down. In my opinion he's the truly 'tragic' character of the story and an example of the writer's skill because he didn't fit the cliche and "help" the group one last time. No, he was just a consistent failure.

As much as I hated the guy I have to say, Ben really did suffer the most. Aside from his personal losses, which everyone had, he was consistently disregarded by the others and died knowing that all the others either hated or were disgusted by him.
