About tooltips / ingame notifications

edited December 2012 in The Walking Dead
I recently finished this amazing game. And I was just watching some videos of other people playing it on YouTube.

So, just now after finishing the game I saw that there are some tooltips that pop up during the game saying stuff like "Clem will remember this.". Luckily I never saw them because the first thing I did (before even starting my first game) was configure my settings and I had them disabled before even knowing what they were. I just had this bad memory of the Back to the Future game that was full of awful notifications and objectives and stuff cluttering the screen.

So I wanted to talk a little bit about my experience when I first played the game, there are two points that where only possible because I didn't see those notifications from the beginning:

1.- Even though I read the message saying that "I would have a tailored story" (which I forgot almost immediately) I didn't have any idea of the game mechanics so I didn't really know what to expect. When Hershel confronted me for lying I was REALLY surprised that he actually remembered that, and was the point when I started to really love the game. I don't know how it is with tooltips, but I'm really hoping that there was not a "Hershel will remember this" tooltip popping up after that conversation with him, that would have completely ruined it for me.

2.- Once I realized the way my decisions influenced the story, I was happily ignorant of those choices that actually changed something from those that didn't. On my head, all my choices where influencing the story. Which made the experience much more real.

So I wanted to say that I think those kind of notifications don't add anything to the gameplay, but exactly the opposite, they just deteriorate the experience, and they are particularly annoying on tense/sad scenes. I don't know any reason why they should even exists in the first place (not even as an option).

Agreed. I played with them ON though.
When Season 2 comes I will surely play with them OFF.

I played with the notifications off because I wanted to be surprised about what people remembered, and because most of them were pretty silly ("X will remember that"). I think having them on would have cheapened my experience rather thanm enhance it.

I thought the "___ will remember that" was nicely done in episode 5, every other episode it I would have been fine to have them off.

i had them on because it helped me to learn how the game works and also i didn't want to pixel scan for everything i could click on

I think you can turn the "will remember this" notifications off and have the distant interact circles still be visible by going into the in game options menu.

I left them on at first because i felt that was how the game was supposed to be played. I never really saw a problem with it and for the most part rarely ever noticed them when they appeared. The only one i noticed specifically was the "Duck thinks you are incredibly awesome" line and that was nice.

They're independent settings, you can have the interact circles on and the notifications off. That's how I set it after the first time I was pixel hunting.

well the notifications don't distract me or make the game worse for me so i will keep them on anyway

Apart from a few jokes and eastereggs ("Duck thinks you're totally awesome") and one or two instances of misdirection ("Carley will remember that"), the notifications are completely useless.
