CE "Limited Preorder Only". ? for Telltale

edited December 2012 in The Walking Dead
Hi telltale,

I just received my CE of the game and it's great. However, today I was exploring the Gamestop website and noticed that both the PS3 and 360 Collectors Editions are back up for order...

What's even more disconcerning is that the "Extremely Limited Preorder Only" description is no longer attached to the item...

This was/is still a special "extremely limited edition Preorder item right???

I'm a bit confused...

Don't know if it's a Telltale or Gamestop issue, but it wouldn't be the first time Gamestop lied about their pre-orders or "pre-order only" bonuses which really aren't only for pre-orders.

Well the "Limited Preorder Only" came directly from Telltale as reported from IGN, Kotaku, basically every online site. So those weren't Gamestop's words.

    Weird huh?...

I've been scouring the internet but there has been no information about a change...

Could those be inventory that were made at the factory but were cancelled and not shipped to the original buyer?

I'm thinking that's got to be what that is. It just doesn't make sense for TT to extend the ordering window and not tell anybody.

Hopefully we get confirmation soon though.

Thanks in advance for your help TT

It's much more likely that it's shady Gamestop being shady than it is that Telltale is trying to pull something.

This is great news for me as I missed out of the initial offering. Was able to pick up 2 copies a few minutes ago. I didn't even realize a CE had been announced, lol. Anyways, The Walking Dead is just a super hot commodity right now. I have made an absolute killing selling some of my walking dead comics so I am willing to take the risk on this compendium. If Telltale produced a relatively small number of these sets, this book could be worth a pretty penny a few years down the line.

I don't know how Gamestop could go against Telltale though. Telltale are the ones in control aren't they?

Like I said before. They made it pretty evident that this was preorder only. It wasn't something that was speculated to may or may not be PO only. It was in writing literally everywhere. So I don't think that they would just go against that.

And I take it that Crush got very lucky in scoring this. So congratz!

Its not like Gamestop can just produce more copies of the game. Telltale is in complete control in regards to the production size of the collectors edition. So I am not sure what it is exactly that people are accusing Gamestop of doing. I am the last person to stick up for Gamestop. I refuse to even buy games from them unless is something exclusive like this Walking Dead set but again, I don't quite understand what people think Gamestop if guilty of here. If they are selling more copies of the game, that means more copies were available to sell. It doesn't matter if they sell them all in one foul swoop or if they stage separate times in which to sell specific quantities. In the end, its Telltale that decides how many will be produced and they are all being sold through Gamestop. The end result is the same.

Thanks, I am happy I was able to get them at regular prices and not for 140+ on eBay!

My bet is that they didn't get the number of pre-orders that they thought they would get. Saying its pre-order only is basically a selling tactic aimed at people who are on the fence about buying it. Make no mistake about it, the publisher produces a set amount of CE's. If they don't wind up selling out from pre-orders, they are not just going to throw the rest in the garbage bin, even if they did say it was pre-order only. They will do exactly what Gamestop is doing and that is sell the remaining copies at retail. So again, my bet is they simply didn't get the pre-order numbers they thought they were going to get and they are selling the remaining copies. In the end, it wouldn't change anything. There would still be the same number of copies available on the market.

That said, it is possible that Telltale went back and had more produced. If that were the case, it would have been Telltale's decision, not Gamestop's. Gamestop is just the outlet in which the game is being sold. The blame, if this was the case, would fall solely on Telltale's shoulders.

That's what I thought. Gamestop can't just produce more behind Telltale's back. I expect that with the agreement of Gamestop getting exclusive rights to the CE, that Gamestop had to follow Telltale's guidlines to the letter.

You're welcome. And I was thinking this was more of a made to order type thing, but I believe you're right that a certain # was planned from the beginning, and then probably adjusted close to release.

For example: they sold 2200 two weeks before the cut off date. Judging by the amount sold and time it sold in, they calculated a total of 2800 to be ordered so they sent that # to the factory for production. But only 2550 where sold in the end. now they are selling of the remainding 250 CE's.

    Could be...

However if Telltale changed the exclusivity of this item and uped production due to the GOTY win then that wouldn't be right...

Agreed, it wouldn't be right if they did that and in all honesty, I highly doubt that is the case. I definitely think it was just a case of not enough pre-orders and Gamestop simply selling the left overs at retail. Gamestop is just a retail outlet. They are not the ones that decide how many copies, of a particular game, will be produced. That's just not how it works. The developer and publisher decide those numbers. So regardless of what happened here, there is no way the blame would fall on Gamestop.

Given the tight schedule that the factories that produce these games are under, its highly unlikely that orders are sent in near the cut off date of pre-orders, Its far more likely that they put in their order after the first week of pre-orders. That data should be more than enough to extrapolate, to a certain degree of accuracy, the total number of copies that are going to be pre-ordered. People don't get charged until a game ships so most people that really intend to pre-order a game tend to do so in the first week that its offered.

I got my 2 sets today so I am golden!
