Use the walkie-talkie?

I apologize in advance if this seems to be a stupid question to some. I got the walkie-talkie from Clementines house and every now and then it it displayed at the left of the screen. I cannot use/choose/pick it though. Do I miss something here or am I not supposed to use it?

You'll use the items in your inventory when you're at a point you can use them. Don't worry about it.
