you didn't get it from adams? interesting. might this have become common knowledge? already?
btw, 42 is not the meaning of life, the universe and everything else, but the answer to the question of life, the universe and everything else..or something. i know, it's only a small difference, but an important one, I think.
42 is the answer to the ultimate question... It was given to the beings we knew as mice because they pushed the issue with Deep Thought
It was to busy watchin the Television(in the movie) so it built another computer to calculate the question.. this was the planet earth.. or rather earth mark II
Course they blew it up for the highway...
if you want to know the real reason adams posted it on his fan site ages ago.. I think its still in wiki
WHY 42!!!
"The answer to this is very simple. It was a joke. It had to be a number, an ordinary, smallish number, and I chose that one. Binary representations, base thirteen, Tibetan monks are all complete nonsense. I sat at my desk, stared into the garden and thought '42 will do.' I typed it out. End of story."

Who's isn't? Did you know that, thanks to the various forms of modern media, most people are not able to concentrate on a single task without being distracted by some kind of input for more than averagely ten minutes?
Anyway, talking about worthless trivia: Posting such facts on a forum like this one could be compared to trowing a piece of bloody meat into a bath tub filled with piranhas...you get a bubble bath.
I just bought a new copy of all 5 books in one volume after "lending" my old copies to a friend and loosing them forever. Leather bound and gilded too. Looks rather expensive (even though it was about £10).

I literally just this minute finished reading the fifth book. The last couple of books seem much better when you read the whole series as one. It's a shame they didn't make the entire thing into an accurately adapted movie series, instead of making one mediocre one with bits from all of the books mashed together. Ah, well...
So Long And Thanks For All The Fish and Mostly Harmless were my favorites in the series, despite (or maybe because of) the bleaker tone, while still managing to be two of the funniest novels I've ever read.
(But the third book has my favorite part, where the Bistromathic Drive is introduced)
* a characteristic state or mode of living; "social life"; "city life"; "real life"
* the course of existence of an individual; the actions and events that occur in living; "he hoped for a new life in Australia"; "he wanted to live his own life without interference from others"
* the experience of being alive; the course of human events and activities; "he could no longer cope with the complexities of life"
* animation: the condition of living or the state of being alive; "while there's life there's hope"; "life depends on many chemical and physical processes"
* the period during which something is functional (as between birth and death); "the battery had a short life"; "he lived a long and happy life"
* the period between birth and the present time; "I have known him all his life"
