Why is TellTale so afraid of creating there own original adventure game

edited January 2013 in The Walking Dead
I know it's there "niche" thing that they have been doing.

But I wonder why they don't have the balls to make there own original adventure game that shows off there best attributes (something comedic like sam and max, but maybe something that also have a very serious and dark tone like twd).

Telltale don't afraid of anything. It's just a lot easier.

Because it's easier (for anyone working with a franchise, not just TTG) to use an existing story/mythos/setting that is established than create something original (that people might or might not like)

Seeing as they're a small company, and creating games is not cheap - it's hard to take risks.

What DreadMagus said basically. Look at BioWare as an example before they got big. They were working with other IP (Dungeons & Dragon, Star Wars) before they got big enough to create their own universe (e.g. Dragon Age, Jade Empire, and Mass Effect). Sadly, EA then happened.

That said, I'm sure that Telltale will eventually be creating their own material.

weren't hector and puzzle agent their original? Always thought so.
Well Hector was decent, puzzle agent not so much.

They were more-or-less original properties, yes, but in each case Telltale was still working with a third party. (Oh, and surely "Puzzle Agent" is more popular than "Hector"?)

Its not like they're not doing original stories. They could have made their own zombie game without the walking dead name attached to it. But it probably wouldn't have gotten near the amount of attention it got. It's just easier to sell things that already has a name that is known. I wouldn't know about telltale if it weren't for the walking dead. As their fan base grows and they become more of a known company they will do original games.
