Saving Ben

edited January 2013 in The Walking Dead
While saving Ben, he says there's no time to save him. So why is it nothing bad happens if you save him. Here's what should have happened:

If you dropped Ben, Lee gets away clean, with no bite and survives episode 5.

If you save him though, Lee gets bitten on the way out. Ben survives through episode 5 as well, taking Lee's place.

Yeah I didn't exactly like how your decision had no effect on anyone's fate.

I think that the point of this game was "how you play the journey."

Well, that and it's a lot cheaper/easier to only make one set of occurrences.

Had no effect on anyones fate? if you drop him, he dies. If you dont he lives. How does that not effect anyones fate?

I think however they should have made it so if you save ben, you pull him up and you both take off for the exit, but ben is bitten but still escapes and now you have to deal with that.

Ben taking Lees place is stupid and would have been a terrible way for season 1 to end. TTG ended it just right. (even tho I hate Lee Dying...)

    He still dies eventually.

How he dies is what matters.

He and Kenny come to an understanding during the balcony death scene that is actually very touching.

He is pretty much murdered by Lee in the belltower otherwise.

He dies by falling into the middle of a pack of walkers in both cases.

And Ben tells Lee to drop him, that's assisted suicide. I just wanted to hear a woman with a british accent say "You are the weakest link, goodbye!" when he gets dropped. :p

Thats not what this decision is about.

Its balancing up everything up he's done. Most players hate him by this point, so any choice involving him would be too one sided, once you knew it was Ben or Lee everyone would just rewind and drop him.

So instead it just asks you "do you really hate him that much?" and do you try and be moral or make sure he cant get anyone else killed, i thought it was quite a good decision. A hard one for me.

I think they had that scene to hold in stark contrast to Irene's, quite honestly.

Irene was bitten and had no choice of continuing to leave.

Ben was a panicky, depressed teen feeling guilty.

And I wouldn't call it assisted suicide. He was throwing Ben to the wolves, like Larry wanted to throw Duck to them.

I would say the only person he really "gets" killed is Brie. He picked a bad time to unveil his soul to Kenny.

And she probably should have been looking at the door and talking, knowing zombies are a foot. In fact, I believe that it's the callousness of the rest of the group members that cause her to lose her attention, not Ben's admission. She seems like a sweet person, and people threatening a teenager probably horrified her.

He put the group in bad situations, no doubt. But plenty of other characters did, from going to the St. Johns' farm without their own weapons to Lee entering an abandoned house with a little girl to Lilly sending everyone on dangerous runs to Clem running away from the group and safety because a stranger told her to. It just so happened the situations Ben put everyone in tended to be the ones somebody (liked) didn't escape from.

Hell, if Ben actually survived Episode 5 I'd pull him up every time. Even if it meant Lee dying. But seeing as he doesn't, I'm more inclined to drop him because it really doesn't matter if he dies at Crawford or in the alley.

Yeah i dont mean to turn him into the devil nobody makes it through without bad moments, but throughout episode 3&4 until the point where you have the option to drop him, 5 deaths can be linked back to his mistakes. Its harsh to call him the main cause for more than 2 of them, but he's a factor in too many. That's clearly something the developers had in mind with this choice.

I don't think it's about his death as how he dies.

No one can prevent the alley death. Lee is part of the cause of the Crawford death, because he can prevent it.

I.e. it's not the what, it's the how and why.

Fun fact: The writers of episode 4 originally envisioned that if you dropped Ben, you agree with Crawford's rules of "Survival of the fittest." If you pulled him up, you reject those rules.

Never really thought of it that way :o I'm pretty sure most people dropped him because they are either pro-Kenny or they just hate his guts xD

    I get that.

Notice how it's Crawford's leader, dead after committing suicide by hanging from the belltower ala Hitler-style, that grabs Ben at the last minute in an attempt to devour him...

Ben tells Lee to let him go, how is that not assisted suicide? :p Lee even has the option to point out that Ben wanted to die in the Bell Tower.

    Hitler style?!?

    Hitler style?!?

I just meant Hitler commits suicide, and so does Crawford's leader.

I've been very ill with the flu, so forgive me if my sentence organization is mid-par.

No, I just didn't understand the comparasion. Many people committed suicide.

Oh, and the guy was called Crawford Oberson. The more you know.

Well, the guy ran the place like Hitler...

I just wish, though. I liked Ben (as a character) and even though I hated him since he left Clem in the street, and nearly got us all killed at Crawford, it felt like a punch in the gut when I let him go. After seeing how he was in Episode 5, I genuinely wished he'd survived because he finally got his act together. Since I liked him so much (as a character) seeing him die (both times) really sucked, and made me wish TT had put in an option for him to live. The kid had his whole life ahead of him, and was finally starting to pull his own weight.

Ever since people started the whole Clem/Ben thing, I've wanted Ben to live just so we can have a scene where Clem lovingly pats Ben on the head and says she'll always think of him as a friend, but she doesn't see him as a boyfriend.

    Telltale KILLED my dream.

Letting Ben go is the stupidest decision on the game because the scene with Kenny forgiving Ben is a fantastic scene and much more touching than the one with Christa.

Telltale killed a lot of things. :(

All though not my wish of Clementine opening a door and going "Ta da!" I had actually wanted to see her do that since she opened the meat locker door and with Episode 4 I finally got it. :D

You see posters of him, i dont remember quite well but the guy hange had hair while the Overseer was bald/balding or really short hair... and was BIG and badass like Larry but more fit.

Someone looked at game's code and the rope that the walker hangs from was called "c_oberson" or something like that.
