edited May 2013 in General Chat
Can anyone tell me if all the original felix the cat cartoons are in public domain. Want to make a dark animated series of it.

Well, according to Wikipedia, his image is being used on merchandise as of 2010. Don Oriolo apparently has creative control over Felix, though whether that means he owns the character completely is up for debate.

In short - it really doesn't look likely.

Well you can create merchandise for public domain characters.

    *sigh*

Contact these guys. They'll probably help you better than I can.

Gonna make an animated series with characters from 1923 or before. Wish me luck.

That's the second strangest question I've ever been asked.

Pure almighty soul-sucking evil, of course.

Hey, if you're going to ruin someone else's character, why not go all out?

Felix will not be a villian. Anyone from 1923 or before you want in this anime?
    There will be golden goose.

My idea is of a dark adventure anime in which Felix and CO have to every 2 weeks or once a month fight Giant monsters that keep on appearing for unknown reasons. Felix has a Magic 3D Printer Bag that is able to create many different creations. Though Felix's main weapon is a Sword.

    Well, all right then.

If you wanna go ahead and make it, then go right ahead. We won't stop you.
    Though I wouldn't be surprised if a C&D did.

This is something I want to see with my own eyes!

Okay but what do you think about my idea. Could use some opinions.

OK, we've had our fun - let's not turn this into an image fight.

Basically, my reaction to TBG's idea is "meh". It sounds rather generic and uninspired, but then again I willing played Simon the Sorcerer 3D all the way through, so what the hell do I know.

I'm not sold on Felix the Cat to be honest. I don't find him to be an interesting character.
  • edited May 2013
He's not. He has practically no personality at all, which is why they gave him the magic bag to compensate.

I would like a more detailed critique.

Why not just make your own anime I mean hardly anyone remembers Felix and ayone who does doesn't have anything good to say. And it really does not suit the style you want to make you would be basically making your own new show anyway.

    If you insist.

Giant monsters that appear for no reason. Primary weapon is a sword. Magic bag that creates random stuff.

You've essentially stated you want your cartoon to have the most generic D&D plot ever.

If that's what you want, then fine, go for it. I still don't see why you want Felix the Cat for it though. You might as well make it the animated tales of an actual D&D game.

I think Felix should travel through space BECAUSE D&D monsters are warring with Space Empires and Felix has become attached to a Hammer Space bag that was created by the Space Empires to pull powerful weapons from and use them to fight these mystical invaders but INSTEAD it fell into Felix's hands and the first person who touches it is the only person that can use it and that's Felix.

It is suppose to be a mystery how and where these giants are coming from and why. Its part of the plot to find the answers.

Doesn't work because people don't care abut the protagonist. The problem is you don't know how it choose the protagonist for your story. I'm telling you this as somebody that deals in publishing constantly. Nobody will care about your plot because they dint care abut your hero. You started with the problem of assuming that because you cared abut your protagonist that everybody else would too.

You can make a good character go stale why not the other way around? Re -Imaging

This is one of those much easier said than done cases. Besides, if you'll reimagine Felix, he'll essentially not be Felix, because Felix is very close to a blank slate. So why even bother, when you could create a new character.

It's like Fallout 3 or Deus Ex: Invisible War. They could have just called it something else.

I'll be blunt. You asked for feedback. And the feedback almost everyone is giving you is that nobody cares about Felix the Cat and thinks you'd be better off creating your own protagonist.

I deal with this sort of feedback all the time, I have to work with literary agents. If you really are committed to using Felix though, by all means do so, stick to your guns. You haven't sold any of us on the character, which is what you'll be in the business of doing when you make this cartoon. Selling people on why they should care about Felix.

lol. Instructor of history at a university, caterer, writer (worked for the NBA, did local sports gigs, have worked for Blizzard entertainment, publish research papers and have a book under review).

I'm not confident that Felix the Cat is in the public domain, at least in the sense that you're looking at. Even with some of his films being old enough, there is a company out there who owns a trademark on his name and likeness, so even if you were able to claim fair use to make a short file, you wouldn't be able to sell it on a dvd, for instance.

Sadly, because lawmakers are in the pockets of business, the public domain (in the sense of new things being added to it) has gone away and will never return. They just keep extending the already unreasonable amount of time; I suppose it's only a matter of time before they go ahead and say "forever" just to save the trouble. It's damn sad when the original intention of copyright was to create a balance, so that creators had a fair chance to profit off of their creations, and then the property would enter the public domain, as the sharing, altering, and passing around of stories, characters and other works has always been a crucial part of human culture. Fortunately, people will keep doing these things anyway; it just sucks that they'll get treated as criminals for it.

You could still publish it just by dropping it into the internet without stating your name, announcing it as an official project and taking credit as a legit person.

While it still would get taken down in most of the places, if it's any good, it would also spread around and reach people.
