Rise of the Pirate God doesn't launch

Just that. I click on the icon, and nothing happens: the launcher doesn't run. Tried uninstaling, downloading again from telltalegames.com and reinstalling, to no avail. I'm on Windows 7 64-bit, compatibility mode didn't help.

All other games run with no problems. Last week I finished Walking Dead, and two weeks ago I played ToMI episode 4. The only difference is now I have an external projector, but unplugging it also didn't make any difference.

I also disabled the antivirus (Avast), but Guybrush still refuses to amuse me.

I forgot how the game ends and I'd like to play it again to the end :-)

Not sure what would cause that. Does Episode 4 still work?

I don't see anything wrong, and since episode 4 still works, it should be something specific to episode 5.

Have you tried right clicking the game icon and selecting "run as administrator" yet?

One other thing you can try is putting a prefs.prop file with low settings into the savegame folder. You'll find instructions here.

I had tried "run as administrator" already. No luck :-(

prefs.prop also didn't help. Not that it would have, because not even the launcher starts. This is really odd. Once I finish unpacking my stuff (just moved in), I'll try installing from my DVD; maybe the older version still works, as I finished the game once already.

I think the DVD version has a different launcher, so that might work.

There's one more thing we can try to narrow it down though.

Please download, extract and run dependency walker.
In the dependency walker menu select "file/open", and open the games *.exe.
Now select "File/Save" to save the data.
Upload the *.dwi file to an instant filehoster and post the download link.

The dependency walker gives some errors, but it gives the same for episode 4.

The dependency walker result also looks just like on my system where Episode 5 works, so that's not helping.

I am running out of reasonable ideas.

I can only think of a few things that might help.
- Try disconnecting from the internet before you start the game
- Update your internet explorer (the launcher embeds it)
- try running the game during a clean boot (see below)

Booting clean in Windows Vista / 7:
1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
3. Uncheck Load Startup Items
4. Select the Services tab
5. Check Hide all Microsoft services
6. Click Disable all
7. If running the game on Steam, re-check the "Steam Client Service"
8. Click on OK
9. Click Restart.
10. After reboot, run the game to see if it works.

After performing the necessary steps, restore your settings by doing the following:

1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
3. Click Ok
4. Click Yes, when asked to restart your computer

I finally had a chance to try the DVD launcher, and it worked just fine. Thanks for the help.
