I think the Last of Us just wins out although it's hard to compare. i thought the Last Of Us is a lot darker than the Walking Dead season 1 though and does a better job of portraying how humanity would return to a more feral wild state.

Imho you can't really compare Ellie to Clementine other than the fact you try to protect both and both are still childs/juvenlines. Character wise, they couldn't be more different. Clementine is a super innocent, pure "angel". Doesn't swear (only once during all 5 episodes and only if you teached her), doesn't ever go hostile, always judges you for aggresive behaviour. Ellie is a full on 180 here, she was brought up in the apocalypse, swears A TON, has no problem stabbing, killing and shooting people, is extremely mature and a lot less innocent. Both are great characters in their own way.

I am a little late here but this is what I have to say

Storyline - I have to go with the Walking Dead, it seems more unique in the zombie genre.
Gameplay - I will have to hp with TLOU, I mean this is my first point and click and I had a blast but I do like TPS gameplay more, only because I have played more of them then point and clicks, the gameplay was still great with TWD.
Atmosphere - The Walking Dead, I have never freaked out over a game choice ever, not even jumpscares got my heat pumping as much as when I crushed Larry's head and stopped him from coming back.
Main Character - The way you could shape Lee into what you want was a great idea, Dave Fannoy is second to none when it comes to voice action.
Second main character - Clementine was my first Clementine level character, a term I use to describe someone so great you will give your life for, and I only have enough room for two that last spot was taken by Bioshock Infinite, so sorry Ellie.
The secondary characters - I do not even no the secondary characters names in TLOU, The Walking Dead wins by a landslide, they were as good as the main characters in many cases, Kenny for the love of god I think was a main character and Carley was so great, I really do not even need to much more.
Ending - The ending of the TLOU is okay but it's more of a cliffhanger then the Walking Dead, and I was not on the floor with so many tears I could not see, because that was Walking Dead, if you ever played the last Episode then enough said.
Dialogs - There is so much Dialog that even after a whole year and dozens of playthrough I still find new dialog, it speaks for it's self.
Music - I think the music in TLOU was one of the better parts in my opinion, but for some reason just hearing the soundtrack for The Walking Dead just makes me understand why I love it so much, thank god for Jared Emerson Johnson, the violin and cello are used just so well.
Touching - The Walking Dead, do I really need to say why, at three different moments tears went down my face, and the amount of said tear only went up as I went through the harrowing last hours of Lee's life.

Winner: The Walking Dead, it was my favorite game of 2012, it a year full of games like Mass Effect 3 with the ending being the most well known part, and average games like Assassins Creed 3, I bought this game in April only because I liked the show, I walked in expecting it to suck since I hated cell shaded graphics at the time, and walked out in November shaken dazed and sadden like I never had been before, knowing full well this was not just the best game in a year full of average to good games, but one of my favorite games of all time, I will remember this game even when the 360 and PS3 are as old as the NES and Sega Masters, it is simply unforgettable in all the right ways, thank you so much Telltale for making this game, you went from nobody to being my Valve, thanks.

    Too different to compare.

TLOU wins hands down for me. The characters go on a far longer journey so there is far more character development. Joel starts the game not liking Ellie, seeing her as a liability, wanting to get her off his hands as soon as possible. You can hear it in his voice. He doesn't care how he makes her feel at the begining but near the end of the game he loves her like a daughter and refuses to let anyone or anything come between them, including death. The characters spend nearly a year with each other and it shows. That to me is powerful.

What I loved about the game was that it made me feel like I was actually there fighting for survival. I found myself making my shots count and searching for supplies. At times I felt paralysed with fear and didn't want to move when I was in the dark and could hear infected nearby until I learned how to deal with those pesky "clickers"

TLOU was very sad and made me nearly tearful at many times in the game. I found the game unpredicatable and full of surprises. It had the best graphics and voice acting I have experienced in a video game and i'm gonna call it right now even if it makes me unpopular with the masses by saying that TLOU is closer to the Kirkman walking dead comics than the walking dead game was because it doesn't pull any punches. Everything that is explored in Kirkman's comic is explored in the game. You see canibalism, characters will actually attack Ellie brutally and at one point a character tries to "groom" young Ellie for sex, touching on the theme of pedophilia and rape which most people are affraid to touch on in games even in apocalyptic settings. Ellie will get beaten to a pulp like Carl does in the comics where as Clemetine never comes to any harm in the game apart from when she hurts her finger pulling the desk in the pharmacy office. (something I had problems accepting when she was kidnapped and held against her will. She should at least have had some marks or signs of struggle)

There were many parts in TLOU that reminded me of TWD comics, I am legend and The Road movie. I was reminded of when Carl takes care of Rick after the prison story arc and has to lead the hostiles away from where Rick was recovering, I was reminded of when Carl saw the deer in tv show (giraffe scene) and the part when the bandits attacked carl in the comics and I definitely felt more affraid of the humans in the game than I did the infected in the way that Rick's people gradually feel less concerned about the dead than they do the living. Walking through the abandoned highway definitely had a walking dead feel to it, looting cars for supplies etc.

Until I played TLOU I never really had a favourite game. I had favourite games since I couldn't pick one from the others in my favourite list but for me, TLOU will be a hard game to beat and I can see it being my favourite game for a long time to come.

Storyline - Tie - they are both great
Gameplay - The Last Of Us is fun. Point and clicks aren't bad but I had a blast with The Last of Us
Atmosphere - The Last of Us is scary. But at the same time it's beautiful.
Main Character - The Walking Dead - Lee is a bit more interesting because he was never a dad and he is a convict
Second main character - Tie - you can't even compare them IMO
The secondary characters - The Walking Dead
    Ending - The Walking Dead
Dialogs - The Last of Us - The Walking Dead had some great lines but The Last of Us had enough humor and quotes to keep you happy and not too depressed
Music - The Last Of Us - absolutely beautiful
Touching - Tie - these both have touching and positive messages. Redemption, The meaning of Family, friendship, moral.
    Experience - The Walking Dead
    Winner: The Last of Us

The Walking Dead still holds a special place in my heart but The Last of Us is simply brilliant
I will say though, nothing can replace the feelings I felt with The Walking Dead.

Okay, so now that you understand my point of view, can you please explain why so many people think that this game is amazing? No really, not trying to be an ass but I honestly don't understand it.
I don't think anyone can explain why any game is amazing since it will always be subjective. You may not appreciate the things they do that is why there are different types of games so there is something for everyone. My brother is a big fan of racing games and fighting games whereas I prefer the cinematic and narrative driven games like Uncharted, Heavy Rain and TLOU. I can't explain to him why the game is the best game ever made I can only say what I like about it. He may not understand my love for the game. I don't understand the love people have for Halo and bioshock and I never will, but then i'm not a fan of fps. I simply say to each his own but most professionals in game development and reviewing will agree that Naughty Dog have produced their greatest work and have taken things to a next level in gaming and I wouldn't be surprised if TLOU won multiple awards at the next spike VGA event. I can see Ashley getting best female voice, Troy getting best male voice, TLOU getting best story, best graphics and game of the year and decade if that award is given annually. Considering TLOU is up against bigger games than TWD was last year that would be some achievement if my predictions come to pass. I mean TLOU will be up against GTA5. Those Rockstar games like GTA and Red dead always win. Then there is Bioshock infinite, Tomb Raider and Beyond two souls which will have the voice talents of Ellen Paige and William Defoe who are both good actors. I'm still confident that TLOU will take it though but we'll just have to wait and see.

As much as I love "The last of us" for its gameplay and story, It wasn't as emotionally engaging and heartfelt as I thought it was going to be... Which leads me to say that I still believe the walking dead game is better even though the last of us has far superior gameplay...

Bioshock Infinite is too different from Walking Dead to compare.

But then again, So is The Last of Us

Alright, who revived this thread? :p

Eh, whatever. I'll give my own two cents as well. I'll set up things like TTaing987 did.

Story- The Walking Dead easily wins. The Last of Us was a game built with story, while TWD's gameplay was short in order to set up a better story. TWD excels as a story based game.
Gameplay- The Last of Us. It had gameplay based on third-person shooter. Nothing new, but it was infinitely better than TWD, which wasn't even a traditional adventure game.
Level designs/Atmosphere- The Last of Us. It worked very hard in order to keep the bleak and dark atmosphere. Each level was vastly different in how it was set up.
Main character- Both main characters have had a dark past and develop throughout the course of the story. Of course, I was Lee. For that reason, The Walking Dead wins.
Secondary character- The Walking Dead. I felt like Clementine was put entirely in my care. While Ellie was interesting and funnier than Clem, Ellie knew how to protect herself with her mom's switchblade from the start of the game. Clem was defenseless, which attributed to me liking her more. Besides, she's the most adorable video game character I have ever seen.
Ending- Season 1 of TWD ended in such a great way I consider the game of one my favorites. The Last of Us ended in a way for the player to make their own interpretation. While interesting, I liked TWD's ending.
Sequel- To be clear, I never wanted a sequel/follow up to TWD. I still don't. It ended in such a great way that the player can decide who the two characters on the hill really are. I desperately want a sequel for The Last of Us. Many thought it was a perfect ending, but I only see segway for a sequel.
Dialouges- The Last of Us. One of the big reasons I liked this was because of the random little conversations that characters say both in combat and non-combat situations.
Music- Of course, this category is entirely up to my personal tastes. I find myself listening to TWD tracks more than a few songs in The Last of Us.
Touching- I cried a few times in TWD. While I never did in The Last of Us, I felt more emotional moments than in TWD. Tie.
Replay value- To be honest, I have not replayed season 1 for quite a while now. After different choices and dialouge options, there's not much reason to replay TWD. I've been replaying The Last of Us, and it never gets old.
Length/Pacing- The Last of Us had a perfect length. I largely had a problem with episode 5 of TWD. Everything just sped up in pacing. The Last of Us wins.

It seems like I like The Last of Us better. But as an experience, I will never forget TWD season 1.

I like to self examine myself from time to time. It keeps me humble. I noticed I seem to be in the minority of people that consider TLOU a better game than TWD so I was left wondering is it me? I checked around on various walking dead vs TLOU sites/forums insearch of impartiality since my posts were on a Telltale forum and as expected the majority of the posts on the other forums believed TLOU to be the better game and outlined similar reasons to the ones I gave on this thread.N4G which is another forum I checked out since it is neither a sony, naughty dog games or teltale games forum added some perspective now i'm left wondering how many posts here are biased through fan boyism. I mean the posters on the other sites also love TWD game as I do but they are not fanboys so they will still prefer other games to it and give reasons why. I don't mean the term fanboy as an insult but as a means of defining one that sees the game like a first love and puts it on a pedal stool even when it is surpassed in ways by another game in it's genre. For many years I felt that way about Shenmue but many years on I have played games that I now consider better but I would say that Shenmue was the greatest for it's time.

TLOU is an excellent game. I have next to no criticisms of it.

It just didn't emotionally engage and 'wreck' me like TWD did, but then precious few things ever have.

Okay so i havent played TLOU yet, So i honestly cant judge it. But i can say that there is a huugggeee diffrence between the games. The publishers TellTale and Naughty Dog both make different kinds of games Naughty dog makes action games and TellTale makes point-and click adventures with a HEAVY focus on story. From that i receive that Naughty Dog isnt as experinced as TellTale in telling a gripping Narrative. Like i said i cant judge entirely but this is what i think.

There were many parts that hit me in the game; the part you said, the part with the kid and his brother, the part with Joel before Ellie was by herself, the part where Ellie was taken etc, i'm trying to be vague so I don't spoil anything. Even the letters I read about other survivors that didn't make it and the people who opted out that were found when raiding houses for supplies hit me a bit, oh and how can I forget the prologue. Seeing the kid cry nearly made me cry. I didn't cry in TWD or TLOU but I came far closer to crying in TLOU because they look and sound so real. I mean the actors playing these characters are proper movie actors and not the straight to dvd shit like what Fennoy usually acts in but cinema released flicks, such is the calibre of the voice talents and you go through so much more with these characters that when they do die it hit me more, especially when they are close to getting to safety. You see the down time in the lengthy cut scenes when Joel is bonding with new survivors, kids playing, the adults talking about the old world etc. Then again as I have said in previous posts we can't all see things the same way.

I don't think anyone compares the games in regard to game play, I think, like myself others see the similarity in theme, story what with them both being apocalyptic settings with infected hostiles. People in TLOU turn and reanimate in the same way that walkers do in TWD. The only difference between the two stories is in TWD the virus origins are unknown where as the TLOU is backed up by science like the virus is in I am legend. Both games are heavily influenced by TWD comics and use Kirkman's ingredients to great effect. Kirkman's walking dead stands apart from other zombie apocalyptic stories because the focus isn't on the monsters but rather the human conditioning and the co existence of man with the new apex predator. They are not just running off like headless chickens and getting killed they are learning how to survive in the new world with a view to rebuilding civilisation. Kirkman described it best when asked what TWD is about; "hugs cries and shit". It's ups and down, people living day to day, finding people and loosing people. It's drama and it's emotional, both games have that in my view. TLOU just pulled on my heart strings a bit more with it's harsh, gritty realism, the fact that it pulled no punches and made me feel like I was fighting to survive with these virtual people comprised of polygons.

He meant his acting career. Yeah he is a great VA but he hasn't been playing any major roles in movies or tv. Hell, I haven't even heard of him before TWD

I loved Fennoy. He is great for video game work but could you see him in a summer block buster flick, a pop corn flick or anything that never went straight to dvd when he was in his prime? When game developers cast quality actors like Defoe, Paige,Baker,Johnson, etc it pays off and they are rewarded with more realistic performances. No disrespect to Fennoy or Hutchison they are great at what they do but in football terms they are championship whilst the others I mentioned are premier league. I was really moved by TLOU, I laughed, I nearly cried and went through the various emotions; fear, happiness, sadness, shock, anger, bewilderment to name but a few and that was down to the writing and the actors preformances driving it home and that was across the board. TWD game was great but it had stand out performances, the best being Fennoy and Hutchison. The little kid with the transformer toy was just as believable in the acting department as the story's lead and secondary lead actor in TLOU.

I may have agreed with you before I actually played the game.

The story follows the characters for nearly a year and I haven't seen character devlopment or story telling in a game handled as well as TLOU in my many years of gaming. The journey was epic and I really felt the characters struggle for survival. The characters feel so real and you feel every punch and knock they exprience, I found myself grimacing throughout the game, such is the gritty realism of this tale. That being sad it won't be for everybody, taste is subjective after all.

I'm looking forward to the single player DLC which is coming out soon for the PS3 and the sequel or rather the next TLOU game which will be the reason I buy the PS4 since Naughty Dog's Druckmann confirmed they will be working on another game based in that universe after the DLC comes out later this year.

It's also a very emotional and compelling story. I found the death scenes in the game far more sad than the death scenes in TWD, for 2 reasons one the people look real so the facial expressions hit you harder when you see them crying etc and the voice acting.

For anyone that has played both games (not watched games being played on youtube since there is a big difference in being a spectator and influencing what is happening on screen), I ask you to consider the difference between the scene where duck dies and the scene at the end of TLOU prologue and ask you're self what is the hardest scene to watch(with honesty) Then compare the death of Carly to the scene at the capital building and lastly who could forget the scene just before the fall and how it compares to Kat's exit.

Personally I found Sarah's last scene to be more sad and powerful than the whole 5 episodes of twd combined and I spent far less time with that character. I say all this to say that the game is so much more than just good graphics. The game immerses you to the point where you feel you are actually there with these people, leaving you, at times paralysed with fear and filled with desperation. That all being said to each is own, we won't all like the samethings and won't all think the same about any one thing. That is just how I see the 2 games and the reasons why.

    I'll bite.
Honestly, Duck's death is more sad than Sarah's. Let's be honest here. From the immense marketing and exposure of characters that this game got before release, where was the mention of Sarah? No where. Who here actually expected the girl to live the whole game? As soon as she was shown, I had a feeling she'd be killed off.
Duck on the other hand, was a moment of sadness for Kenny after seeing his wife kill herself. Did you feel more for Kenny's loss, or Joel's?

    I will, however, say that
Tess's death scene was infinitely more sadder than Carley. While no death in TLOU made me cry, I felt for Tess's departure in the game. The way she begged Joel to do something as her dying wish got me.
On the other hand, I didn't find Carley's death to be sad. It was more of a really surprising moment. Most of the people who were extremely distraught over her death had feelings of, "OMG LEE AND CARLEY WER GOIN' TO GIT TOGETHER!" In reality, Carley's death wasn't that sad.

I can confidently say that these two were the best games I've played this year. Which one is the better one? Well that's extremely tough to decide. Both have their ups and downs for me.

When it comes to the main character pair, I have to give it to the Last of Us. I absolutely loved Joel's portrayal by Troy Baker and not even Dave Fennoy's Lee was able to outshine it. And while I loved Clementine, Ellie was a deeper character and (to me) even more likable. That might have to do with her being 6 years older, so it's not really a fair competition.

However, the Walking Dead crushes the Last of Us when it comes to side characters. WD made me bond with the characters on a personal level. In TLoU the characters, while well written and voice acted, are still just background and I didn't care about a single one. So that brings it to a tie.

In terms of mechanics, the Last of Us wins from a technical perspective hands down- the graphics are absolutely amazing and the gameplay is a great mix between interactivity and cinematicness (is that even a word?). However, WD offered us interactive (to a point) story, so it felt personal, while TLoU is completely linear, so, despite being the game with more actual gameplay, it feels more like watching a movie, with little control over what happens on the screen. So that, again, brings me to a tie.

As for the rest of stuff- the voice acting, the sound, the music, the atmosphere- are brilliant in both games and it's only a matter of preference. Myself I prefer the quasi-realistic setting of TLoU and the fungus infected only a liiiitle more over the walking corpses. But TWD nails its particular niche very well also, so it would be unfair to give TLoU a point based only on my taste. Which brings me to a final result...

    A solid TIE.
