Playing as Pre-established Characters...

edited July 2013 in The Walking Dead
One of cool things about Season 1 was playing as a character from the start of the Apocalypse until his story ended.

We were given free-reign on building that character's personality from the ground-up through the choices that were set before us.

Depending on how you played, the character could turn out to be a Moral Guardian, a Survivalist, or he could find himself existing in a hinterland between the two.

Whilst the choices you made did not impact events much, they certainly affected the people around him and changed the tone of the game.

In 400 Days, every Player Character has a personality that is pre-established and is some way into the Apocalypse (bar Vince, whose story takes place near the beginning).

We are not given as much choice with these characters, but they still are likeable and, in some aspects - relatable.

Any decisions you can have them make still fit in with their character.

I remember people wanting Kenny or Molly as the Player Character for Season 2 (some still do), and they were met with the response that the characters are already stuck in their ways...

But as long as the choice options fit in with the character, I don't see the big deal...

Thoughts?

I still am one of those Kenny IS NOT DEAD type of people, we still live here but it not him then the 400 days people would be okay with me since I liked them all.

I think the 400 days characters were quite Lee-ish in the way they were quite blank slatey, bar Russell, in my opinion. Their stories were short enough to see the characters in those situations. Like, if we saw only Lee, or any of the Motel group for that matter, at Doug/Carley's murder, they weren't constantly like that. Lee wasn't always angry and threateny towards Lilly, Lilly wasn't always shouting at Ben or shooting allies, Kenny wasn't always abstaining from major group discussions due to other issues.

Just like Wyatt wouldn't always be quietly angry at someone, or Bonnie calling people bitches. We saw small snippets of their personality, and while there wasn't always much diversity in the dialogue choices, think how the situation would have affected them. They all could take on the mantle of PC for Season 2, in my opinion. They have unique personalities, but they are vague and changeable based on the situation or experiences. I think it would be better than say a usual blank slate character. More interesting anyway.

I'd like a new playable character from Season 2. But I would like the 400 Days people to play a prominent role. Since they all have basic personality anyway it wouldn't be so bad. Maybe a few things they say could be based on the decisions we made in 400 Days (e.g. Wyatt is more depressed or more cowardly if he stays in the car and leaves Eddie, Bonnie lies more if she lied to Leland, Becca is more sadistic depending on what Shel does, Russell's morals change if he stays with Nate or not, etc...)

The same thing could be said of Lee. You only assume control of Lee after he's already murdered a senator. Think of the player as a ghost (or even better, the alien parasite from THE HIDDEN :p), occupying a particular character's brain at different points of time.

400 DAYS is probably the best example so far of what Telltale is trying to do. Vince is already a killer, Wyatt is already speeding away from the scene of a crime with his buddy Eddie, and Bonnie has already started an affair with Leland. That's why I feel it's possible a pre-established character could become the PC for season 2, as Telltale has already laid down the groundwork for it to happen.

However, I definitely wouldn't want to jump to another character's body at the beginning of every single episode. 400 DAYS was a fun experiment, but the structure for S1 should be carried over for S2.

If you mean alive as in Kenny being a walker, maybe. However, he clearly died off screen - if you have Lee stay and watch, he watches Kenny getting killed by the zombies

Maybe Lee has that look on his face because he sees Kenny's Stache being ripped off by a walker and walks after that because he's sad. Lee failed to noticed that Kenny went on a berserker rage after his sweet Stache was ripped off and decapitates all the zombies with a shiv he finds on the ground. Kenny then runs off and goes into hiding. He waits in a cave until the magnificent moustache he waited so many years to grow slowly grows back. He doesn't come out of the cave until Day 400, he is now searching for Clem with his radar built in to his moustache along with his mini map in his mullet

If you stay at the gate, you can clearly see Kenny run away to the left after shooting Ben. Simply put, to say he is either alive or dead would both be lies. But that's not the topic here...

I have no problem playing pre-established characters, but if it's a character we've been with for a long time, i would prefer they go through some sort of change before or during our control of them. Some type of event that would give them a reason to change their actions, or something similar. I don't want to play a character who has a very specific personality that would limit our choices too much.

About time, nobody to today seems to think Kenny is alive, I thought that those people had left in the month that I was gone, that's all now back to topic.

    Lol.

That's why I think Kenny would be the most likely candidate for S2's PC, if Telltale decided to use a character we've already come to know. The scene where he parts ways with Lee (Christa or Ben scenario) feels momentous for Kenny, in either a life-ending or life-changing sense.

Many people who have gone through a near-death experience sometimes claim to be a completely different person afterwards. (Watch the movie FEARLESS if you haven't already, if you want a good example.) The same could easily apply to Kenny, thus offering an explanation for his more "malleable" PC-friendly personality.

There should be a dialogue option to not give a shit what anyone says and just stroke your Stache...

    Choice 1.) Hey there!
    Choice 2.) How ya doin?
    Choice 3.) Fuck You!
    Choice 4.) *stroke marvelous Stache*

After sometime people would just start saying they want my mustache, the opinion to just kill them with it will be available.

If Kenny were the player character in Season 2, there wouldn't just be good play troughs and asshole playthroughs, there'd be Stache playthroughs too lol

Anyone with a mustache will ether run or fight Kenny, and no one can be the stache of the gods.
