Walking Dead Crashes

edited July 2013 in Game Support
I just bought The Walking Dead on Steam. I immediately downloaded and played it, only to be greeted by "WalkingDead.exe has stopped working", like so many other players. I spent hours trying every fix available, but nothing has worked. My computer specs are fine for playing it. When will a patch be released for this problem that so many are affected by?! If no patch is released, will we get refunds on this broken, unplayable game?

I can try to help you get it working.

Please follow the instructions to run the Support Tool and attach the resulting "support_data_pc.zip" to your next reply in this thread.

Where would the "support_data_pc.zip" be after I ran the support tool?

Also, its giving me an "invalid XML content" message.

In the same folder you unzipped the the create_support_data.bat to.

    That's odd.
Can you please copy the entire text it shows, or post a screenshot?

I'm having a similar problem to lucavee99 but I don't get any "WalkingDead.exe has stopped working" window, it just doesn't start for me. I installed DirectX from the game's folder but that did nothing to help. I hope this is the last problem I have with this game but a look at the forum tells me otherwise.

I do not have the file that you said I would. after running the program, I have 3 new things in the folder that I unzipped it too. data.txt, dxdiag64.txt and events.txt. Is that what you need?

Yes. These 3 files are zipped automatically. Did you press enter at the end of the support tool run?

    Yes I did.

Your crashes are caused by an incompatibility with Windows 8. Unplugging your Xbox controller should help.
    Card name: Intel(R) HD Graphics
    Dedicated Memory: 32 MB

It is possible though that the game still won't work, because Intel graphics chips are not recommended and they don't work well with TTG's games.

I see you have already tried the dinput8.dll workaround. What else have you tried already?

Otherwise I don't see anything unusual. There's not even any entries in the event log, so I don't have much to work with.
I can only list some things, that may or may not do anything.

You can try if updating your Realtek sound driver helps.

You can try verifying the game cache files.

Also please check the properties of the Steam.exe, your Steam icons, and the games .exe files, and disable any compatibility mode settings.
Sometimes compatibility mode is checked, but is grayed out. Then you have to click on "Change settings for all users" at the bottom to disable the checkbox.

I have tried all fixes listed online. I have verified the files, run in compatibility, run as administrator and even tried the weird fixes like unplugging iPods and controllers and turning off the internet.

I am currently updating the sound driver and also my graphics card driver just in case.

If you have any security software that could interfere with the game, it's also worth
trying disabling it. Ideally during a clean boot.

Booting clean in Windows Vista / 7:
    1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
    2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
    3. Uncheck Load Startup Items
    4. Select the Services tab
    5. Check Hide all Microsoft services
    6. Click Disable all
    7. If running the game on Steam, re-check the "Steam Client Service"
    8. Click on OK
    9. Click Restart.
    10. After reboot, run the game to see if it works.

After performing the necessary steps, restore your settings by doing the following:

    1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
    2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
    3. Click Ok
    4. Click Yes, when asked to restart your computer

Nope, neither worked. Is there anything else I can do?

You can try replacing the games prefs.prop in
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead
with the one in the .zip I attached below.

When I did that, something really weird happened. The steam icon turned green, like I was in a game, yet nothing popped up. Then it turned blue again, as if the game had crashed. I didn't even get an error this time.

    is there anything else?

I just went through all posts again, and realized that i forgot about the "invalid XML content" message. That happens at the part that's supposed to get the event logs automatically.

If you get them manually i might be able to find a new approach.
Please follow these instructions on how to start the Event viewer.

Then open the "Windows Logs/Application" section.
Open the search dialog by pressing CTRL-F.
Search for walkingdead101.exe. If you get a result, close the search window.
Right click the entry, select "copy the details as text", and paste them in a new reply.
Press F3 to see if you get more results, and if so, copy them as well (not more than 3 or 4 if there are way too many).

    Thanks. Next step.

Please open the Steam client. In the menu select "help/system information".
Right click on the information it shows and select "select all".
Right click again and select "copy".

Now that's a clear case. Your Steam client is running in Vista compatibility mode, which is known to cause crashes.

I posted it before, but maybe you missed it or something:

Please check the properties of the Steam.exe, your Steam icons, and the games .exe files, and disable any compatibility mode settings.
Sometimes compatibility mode is checked, but is grayed out. Then you have to click on "Change settings for all users" at the bottom to disable the checkbox.
Afterwards try if the game works.

It still doesn't work. Now it doesn't even pop up at all. It just doesn't launch

Does it show "Windows 7" now in the Steam system information?

    No it does not

That's weird. And you are 100% sure, that the steam.exe and WalkingDead101.exe have no compatibility mode set?

    Yes. I made sure.

Then all you can do is checking for it in the registry and removing the steam related values if there are any.

THAT WORKED! Thank you so much for all the help!
