Why is there so much swearing in the game?

edited July 2013 in The Walking Dead
I mean, even the kids, like it's possible for even Clementine to swear, and Becca curses a lot for a 10 year old.

First off, Clementine's swearing depends on whether or not you used any such words, like "shit" in episode 1, and second I don't think Becca's age was ever confirmed, or am I on the wrong track? Besides it is realistic that people in general swear, when their life is in danger, which is a given situation throughout the whole game. And if kids hear such things they just might repeat it.

If you were in the situation I'm sure you would also curse, I know I would.

yea the swearing doesnt bother me at all.. I think if we were in a wold of a zombie apocalypse, there would be alot of swearing going on and most people wouldnt even notice or care.

Alot of people make comments about this game with the mindset that it's just a game in todays world and forget this is supposed to be a zombie apocalypse.

So many make decisions based on today, right now, think of being kind and helpful, but if we were in a real zombie apocalypse, survival would mean forgetting kindness and making the hard choices.

I see people play this and worry how others will take thier decisions, while I want to respect everyones opinions and decisions, I just think thats the wrong mindset. Put yourself in the shoes of the characters and do what needs to be done to survive. If you worry more how others will think of you, you'll proably end up as walker chow!

I do realize this is just a 'game' and there is alot of swearing in it, but that's partly what make the game work, making it realistic, putting your emotions into the story! The swearing is "needed" imo!!

It's said you should be able to articulate your speech without resorting to swear words. I only swear when i'm extremely annoyed, shall we say but definitely try to moderate myself otherwise.

There's nothing cool or whatever about using four letter words. Now if it was a Zombie Apocalypse I would probably be a lot more on edge all the time which would probably make me curse more, but all the time? Doubt it.

    Very good point..

I spent 10years in the US Navy and did my fair share of random swearing, I dont swear much at all anymore because there's not much reason, but if we were in a ZA and had to endure all the stress and horrors, im sure that sort of language would be common and not even an issue.

When Kenny and Lee heard the gunshot, found Kat had shot herself while taking Duck into the woods, Kenny said "oh fucking god".. Kinda extreme language, but who would argue it wasnt appropriate? The man basically just lost his wife and son! I would be worried if Kenny said "gosh darnit"!

Extreme circumstances call for extreme language, I suppose. They ARE going through some messed up crap.

It's natural, there is no law and order so what is going to stop swearing?
  • edited July 2013
Ok then. If I'm ever in a ZA, I'll be sure to remember to stick to minced oaths lest any delicate ears be offended while I'm braining the undead.

Sacré bleu and Gadzooks should cover it :D

In an apocalypse you kind of stop censoring yourself...
When children see you bashing heads in a swear doesn't mean as much

It's staying true to the comic?
  • edited July 2013
I think so, it has been sometime since I read the comics but I think so.

The last two issues I read had a character saying the F-word so many times I was like, "Dude, enough." Kirkman probably thinks its funny, lol.

So more then the game, I thought that was not possible.

So much more. It was kind of ridiculous. You think I'd be used to it by now.

    That is crazy.

If the apocalypse happens, I'd be swearing 100000x times they did in the game or the TV show.

I think I would to, I think we all would.

If anything, there'd probably be even more profanity in a real zombie apocalypse.
  • edited July 2013
I don't mind if there is swearing, but I do think the game stretched my limit for how much random profanity was flung haplessly in the story.

My issue is that a lot of it isn't meaningful. It's just people saying the f word whenever they just feel like it. At some point it loses any power or emphasis and just becomes excessive.

Funny how I didn't really realize this until I played 400 Days, which I think was the biggest offender. I might suggest that even if you don't cut the profanity out, just space it out better. Punctuated profanity moments work all the better for a story, like Kenny's sad moment in Episode 3.

All the swearing sounded normal to me. Some people swear a lot in day-to-day conversation. Others swear when they're just annoyed, and some only swear when very scared or angry. This game has a mix of all of those.

I dont think swearing always has to be meaningful. Its just what people do.
