How would you rank the episodes?
Ok, this just came to my mind after reading the episode 4 complaint threat. Figured we could expand the subject a little more. From best to worst, how would you rank the episodes of season 1 of the Walking Dead? (400 days excluded, as it focuses on stories independent of the first season). Feel free to also explain why.
I would rank them thus:
1. Episode 2. A solid tale throughout, with just the right amount of action, horror, character development, and a truly epic finale. Also kept the bodycount to a reasonable level.
2. Episode 1. A well executed beginning, the atmosphere is just right, and I loved how they made you feel for Lee while he's walking around that drugstore, picking up on his family's demise. Also, cameos from the comics were executed very well.
3. Episode 5. Good finale, touching ending. I liked the confrontation with the stranger, and it had its fair share of epic moments.
4. Episode 3. While I truly loved the beginning (having picked up where my favorite episode left off). In fact, after the good beginning, and solving the mystery at the Motor Inn, I was under impression that it would once again one-up the previous episode. But as the survivors left the Inn, the episode went downhill for me. I understand the need to kill off characters, this being the Walking Dead and all, but the casualties of four (important!) people almost at once was something I wasn't able to just move on from.
5. Episode 4. I felt like this one was the weakest, but I bet part of the blame also goes to Episode 3, for gut-punching me in the feels so much, I hardly cared about the events of Episode 4 at all. Plus, my favorite new character, Molly, vanished abruptly, and I felt like there could have been so much more done with her. Same goes for Chuck.
So yeah, this turned out longer than I expected, but I'd be interested to hear other people's opinions

2. Episode 2. I loved the tense tone of the episode, not to mention how dark it was. This was the episode which explored an important theme from the comics, which was cannibalism. Overall, this episode was strong enough to make me quit playing for a bit after the sick dinner scene. I'd hope for more strong episodes like this in the future.
3. Episode 1. We got introduced to some of the most well written characters in gaming, and the episode itself did a good job getting us used to the adventure game QTE's. I didn't hate the episode, I just found nothing special in it.
4. Episode 4. Here's where things fall apart. I didn't like this mainly because it was meant as a light-hearted episode to make the player feel good after the traumatic events of episode 3. Molly's character purpose was solely for this reason. Many characters were sent out in a weak way (Chuck, Molly), not to mention how the episode relied almost completely on zombie action. Get some more human drama in TWD!
5. Episode 5. Okay. I'll admit. This episode had a very strong ending, one to make me cry. Other than that, I see nothing special about this episode. It was very short and on top of that, was very quickly paced. Not like the others, episode 5 was almost completely reliant on dialogue choices instead of playing the already meager adventure-puzzle gameplay. Not a huge fan of the episode.
-I'd say that the episodes continued to get better and better, peaking out with the best at episode 3. Then the quality of the episodes went downhill.
On that we agree. For me it peaked out somewhere between the RV stop and Katja's suicide/shooting Duck. It was a farewell to the characters that I've come to care about during the excellent previous episodes, and while I felt that those deaths were too many at once, I gotta take my hat off for the writers, for making it so... I don't know, good, for a lack of better word. There was little to no crying/mourning, yet all that was conveyed more subtly through silence and expressions, rather than cliche words. It felt realistic, and induced more feels in me than any video game ever could. With very rare exceptions. Sadly, after that it went downhill. I understand this series was primarily about Lee/Clementine, but personally, it was the interactions with the side characters that I enjoyed the most. And sadly, none of the characters introduced in episodes 3/4 made me invested in them half as much as the ones from episode 1/2 did.
Episode 3
Episode 5
Episode 1
Episode 4
2. Episode 2
3. Episode 5
4. Episode 4
5. Episode 1
All very good though, Episode 1 is a 9/10 to me still.
2) Episode 3: I loved the tension in this episode. I think this is also the episode when the characters start changing the most. Also, we lose characters and gain new ones.
3) Episode 5: This episode was so touching, I loved how badass Lee was going through the herd to save Clementine. Also the ending... my feels. ;-;
4) Episode 1: Starts off a little slow but eventually picks up the pace. We get to meet the characters and there are two instances in which we must pick who to save and who to let die (which I'm not quite fond of )
5) Episode 4: Although none of the episodes are bad, this is my least favorite. I didn't like how Molly just left and the invasion of Crawford wasn't as good as I expected.
2,3,5,1,4, 400 days
Feels rank:
5,3,1,2,4, 400 days
Ep. 4 is at the bottom of both my lists.. I don't even dislike episode 4 at all, but it felt out of place with no truly difficult decisions and a focus on action that overshadowed the story most of the time. I think it did a lot of things right, too, but lacked the feels from the previous episode.
2.) Episode 3
3.) Episode 4
4.) 400 Days
5.) Episode 5
6.) Episode 1
Episode 2 is TellTale's best work evaaaar
I also rank episode 3 up there in terms of atmosphere. While playing it I really felt the sense of loss and abandonment at seeing the world start to fracture. Watching the group break down was heart-wrenching.
On reflection, the other episodes had more of a "come here, do this, go over there, get attacked by walker OH NOES", which is ok I guess but they aren't as creepy as on re-plays. Episode 1 I will overlook for this since it had to set up the story, and it did a great job with it; I was immersed by the time I met Clem.
2. Episode 2: This episode presents to us for the first time the idea of MENTALLY SICK PEOPLE. I also like how epic some moments were (like Andy's confrontation), and you have to make hard choices (I didn't have much trouble deciding to side with/against Kenny or to save Carley/Doug, but saving/killing Larry was a really hard decision to make, because it defines your bonds with Lilly and Kenny).
3. Episode 5: A really straightforward episode with a lot of epic scenes and THAT ENDING OH MY GOD AAAAAAAAAAAARGH...
4. Episode 3: Not a bad episode, it just... I don't know, I hate how they make you like those characters, AND THEN THEY KILL EVERY ONE OF THEM (I didn't like Duck that much and Lilly didn't exactly die, but...)!!! And then you have to live with a sulk Kenny and a desperate Ben. You also meet Chuck, who then tells Clem a bad thing that made me want to punch him on the face. Anyway, not a bad episode, but a sad one. Hard to get over it.
5. Episode 4: Yeah, I kinda liked this episode, but it was a little boring (finding the dog, buiring the kid, searching the house, searching for the battery at Crawford), and they kill Chuck (whom I didn't like much after he told Clem she was going to die, but still... I don't like to see people die) in a way so... meh. Then we have Molly, which is a nice character, but you don't even have enough time to know her, since she gets away at the end of the episode. The only thing I really liked was the choice to drop/pull up Ben. Man, that choice.
6. Episode 1: I really didn't like this chapter. I mean, I really like some parts (like Hershel's farm or the quest for ''Glenn's damsel in distress''), but in general it was kinda boring, and there's only one choice that matters (saving Carley or Doug).
1. Episode 2. (This is when you really get the group dynamic.)
2. Episode 1. (Little slow to begin with but a really good way to set the scene)
3. Episode 5. (So many feels and that ending... ;__; )
4. Episode 3. (All I will say is CARLY! )
5. Episode 4. (I was really starting to like Molly and then POOF she's gone!)
I'd probably put 400 days between 5 and 3. I liked the stories, I just wish they were longer. Except for Shels.
I probably would too. Maybe it would have even surpassed the episode 1 for me, because it had some really tough choices, but I felt like I spent too little time with the characters to care about what I do to them as much as I did in season 1.
Ep 2 I liked it a lot as well. The characters became a lot more fleshed out as well
Ep 1 Really liked it as it introduced everyone and there was lots of different locations and decisions. I do feel the drug store section takes a bit too long to complete.
Ep 4 - Action packed however I agree it did feel a bit fillerish however the development of Kenny and Ben was good to see.
400 days - Fresh characters and showed there was plenty of stories to tell
Ep 5- sorry but it was short and the last one of the season so I was a bit down while playing it I suppose. All the charcters are just wiped out within half an hour which feels too rushed. Plus it started to glitch when I played it so there's that too.
2) Episode 5 - Little short, but the best emotional scenes in the series to date
3) Episode 1 - Did a great job of laying the groundwork for what was to come.
4) 400 Days - Wish it was a little longer and the choices were weak at times, but it was the most fun to play. Varied, Interesting and crucially proved that the series could survive without the Lee/Clem dynamic.
5) Episode 4 - Good, but there was definately a little filler. Crawford was a let down, but the ben choice was a good one.
6) Episode 3 - Harsh to put it on the bottom, but i like them all and one of them has to be. The first half had some of the most shocking and memorable scenes to date certainly, but they basically killed of characters i cared about and replaced them with ones i didn't. This caused the second half to drag a lot for me and it got pretty dull at points (probably even hung over into episode 4 a bit).
2) Episode 2: Starved For Help - The first episode where you really start to get to know the other characters, and see some development for them. The pacing is excellent, and the twist is perfectly executed, and very disturbing. The part with the tractor was an awesome, perfectly done action scene. It has some of the most intense and meaningful decision making in the series.
3) Episode 1: A New Day - A very well done introduction to the world and characters, and the opening scene is particularly great. It also some some of the best of the few real puzzles in the series.
4) Episode 3: Long Road Ahead - Starts out with an intriguing mystery, has the most gut wrenching deaths in the series, and the train puzzle was a welcome change of pace. It also has some pretty intense action scenes.
5) Episode 4: Around Every Corner - Introduces a cool character, has some very intense moments in Crawford and the sewer.
There was not a bad episode, it's just that I enjoyed some more than others .
2)Episode 2. Just awesome episode, the ideas are great.
3)Episode 1, meeting Lee and Clementine.
4)episode 5, sad ending but awesome badass scene.
5)Episode 4.I liked it but not as the others.
Exactly how I felt. I didn't mind being introduced to Christa/Omid, I don't dislike them, Omid's a great guy and all, but I still never cared even a little bit about how they were gonna end up. They weren't THE people whom Lee survived 3 months with, and got through the hell that was the dairy. All the more ironic that they're the ones who survived until the very end. And Chuck/Molly felt more like fillers tossed in to fulfill their roles, only to be erased out of the game as soon as their purpose was done. They hardly felt like real characters. I liked Molly's character, but she was ultimately underused.
Christa and Omid show up quite late in the game, and so there isn't as much time to get to know them, but they were very important in the final chapter, and I quite like them. I have a feeling that we will see more of them in Season 2. Molly and Chuck were the most throw-away characters in the game, because they both had such short roles, although they were both interesting for what they were.
On another note, I am a bit surprised to see that most people put the fifth episode on the middle of the list, or even at the bottom . I guess different story elements resonated more with different people.

2. Episode 1

Its probably just me... but I HATE episode 2
were on two different sides of the spectrum then :P
Episode 2
The suspense while travelling around the farm, the character bonding in the beginning, the difficult choices in the woods and the meatlocker, and the finale made for a brilliant episode.
Episode 1
A good start with introducing a diverse cast with good character bonding moments in the drug store, the different missions to take during the drugstore, as well as the moment where the player needs to decide which character to save. All in all, it was a good beginning of the first season.
Episode 5
Though the length was short, was a satisfying finish of the first season. The conversation with the 'villain' had felt tense and grim, and how past events catches up to the player was interesting.
Episode 3
Had started strong with the supplies theft plot, but fell apart as characters were being killed off or thrown out one by one to make room for new characters. The episode only served to create drama, and made past choices and character bonding meaningless.
Episode 4
Clementine's quest to find her parents were dropped for the boat plot, Ben's character was changed from a guy who made a terrible mistake to a doom magnet archetype where bad luck follows him everywhere, the threat of Crawford happened off-screen and was dropped the moment the player arrived, and a character that was introduced in Episode 3 was killed off early and then forgotten about.
