More Episodes Focused on Survival

edited July 2013 in The Walking Dead
I think I've figured out why (at least I) loved 'Episode 2' so much. Mainly because it was focused on survival, you were being hurt by another small group of people and you had to make sure everyone was safe.

The other episodes were focused on story (WHICH IS NOT A BAD THING - IN FACT IT'S A GOOD THING)

Episode 1: Introducing characters and sub-plots

Episode 2: Survival, End of a Subplot, Starts new Subplot

Episode 3: End of Subplot, New Characters

Episode 4: Beggining of the End, Subplot from Episode 2 Plays out, New Subplot, Major Event (Lee is bitten)

Episode 5: All subplots play out as main plot, Character deaths and 'Grand Finale'.

Episode 2 never moved the game much besides the introduction of the 'Car' you can steal from which comes back later.

So would you like more episodes (7 Episodes in Season 2?)

For 3 of them to be about survival?

Would you want less?

Would you want a whole season where walkers are more dangerous than people? (I know I would).

Huh. Episode 1 seemed to be the most realistic to me, and I'm gonna have to disagree on one point though. I don't think Episode 1 was just introducing characters and plots.

But to answer your base question, yes. I love the element of survival in this series. But they can relate to something that happened before or after what they're currently going through. Some things I can imagine for a survival episode is bandits, a horde, or a supplies mission (As in they are attacked while scouring an abandoned house).

I think Episode 2's popularity has to do with the building of tension. Most people figure out or at least suspect the twist well before the reveal, but they're forced to play along. Things get more and more creepy (especially with Danny, I love that creepy-ass motherfucker) but there's nothing they can do about it as Lee and they're entirely at the mercy of the St. Johns. It's the episode that evokes the most psychological horror and the greatest feeling of helplessness in the player.

It's also why Nate is so popular. You know he's going to do something crazy, you just don't know what and meanwhile you, as Russell, are completely dependent on him. So yeah, if you want more episodes like Episode 2, just throw Nate in there a few times.

Yessssss. Nothing is more intense than seeing the characters you care about fight for survival. I was at the edge of my seat screaming when Kenny gets shot by Andy.

I hope to see more of it in S2.

I think this is great! I forgot all about Nate! You're right that he can seem normal, and ready to burst at any time. And Episode where the player is alone on the road after an incident could be an opportunity for Nate to come along and pick us up, but this is a long drive, and Nate keeps worsening. But we have no idea how horrible the fate behind us is.

Something else I'd like to see more in S2 is more side-missions, like the side-mission in the drug store where you give people energy bars, and help Carley put those batteries into the radio. Also, like in Episode 2 where you fix the swing. More of that stuff. Makes it feel more realistic: I don't know why.

I second this. I loved these little gestures towards characters that you can either do or skip completely. And yes, more surviving, please. One of my favorite scenes was, in fact, the food distribution. I was like "4 items for TEN people, are you kidding me?!" then Lee looks around and sees everybody giving him puppy eyes, and I'm like "fuck, this is gonna be tough". Well, feeding the kids was a no-brainer, but I spent a LOT of time thinking who of the adults should get a meal. I'd like more of something similar in Season 2.

I agree with this. Episode 2 was great not because it was entirely built from the idea of survival, it was the the tension that built up with the player from the events that happened.

Hope for more of these tense events in season 2.
