Nate Cares for Russell
Regardless of what you might think of him, Nate cares for Russell.
Now I know what some of you are thinking:
Law, how could a thief with a murderous streak, a twisted sense-of-humour and a painfully-undiagnosed mental health condition care for the safety and well-being of a young lad whose personality is clearly the polar opposite of his own?
And
Is this a Shipping thread?
No – this is not a Shipping thread…
Evidence for my claim lies within the chapters of the game itself - so don't mind me whilst I cite my "Fucking Sources"…
Exhibit A – Nate offers Russell a free ride, and comes back to save him from the walkers if he refuses it…

Exhibit B – Nate offers Russell the use of his only gun as an apology for his failure to provide him with covering fire earlier, and delivers on his promise to cover him more adequately in the future…

Exhibit C – Nate drags Russell to safety after he falls over running from cover-to-cover…

Exhibit D – Nate refers to Russell as his Boy…

Exhibit E – Nate refers to Russell as his Boy for a second time if you choose to stay with him, and tries to comfort him after the violence that takes place soon after you do…

Exhibit F – If Russell chooses to bail, Nate will be sorry to see him go, and will take out his frustration on the couple...

Haha
With a salt lick or with his truck ?
With his foot if he is feeling fancy.
Yeah.
I think either Nate wanted a lackey or 'minion', or like you said, just someone to mess with - probably both. He was sussing out Russ the entire time; testing him.
In saying that, there's no reason Nate couldn't also be a bit 'fond' of Russell.
He didn't say "got tail?" he said, "any tail back where you come from?" and he has an obvious preference for women as well. When he actually is being nice to Russell, he treats Russell in the manner of more a father than a friend, referring to Russell as "his boy"
yeah, nate is a manipulator and was playing power games and asserting his dominance the whole time in the car, and it was only when he had worn down Russell to a more submissive state that he actually apologised, and with good knowledge that Russell wasn't going to try and be the alpha male dominant type that he actually gave Russell the gun
