Why don't people use armor?

edited August 2013 in The Walking Dead
You don't really see it in the series, and you don't see it in the game so far...
But why aren't people using armor to protect themselves from the walkers?
If they can't bite you, you're pretty much invulnerable, as long as its not 100 walkers prying you apart.

A firemans uniform wouldnt let human teeth through, kevlar, thick leather, its not like walkers have become panthers, they are still humans. Hell if you happened to come across a smith, or someone handy, you can create a crude metal outfit or just armor like a knight. Pretty powerful stuff in a zombie apocalypse if you ask me

I've heard one reason once being that it would be too hot in Atlanta, and i may agree to it if you walk around in a full metal armor, but even then you would only have to put it on when you are going in dangerous territory. And yes you may be alot slower too wearing alot of stuff, but i would gladly lose some mobility if it saves me from a ton of bites... Its not like Walkers are that fast.

And im not even talking about heavy armor, like i said, leather should do the trick. Or just protecting your arms and neck... I hope this gets mentioned or used in season 2. What do you guys think?

Rick's group in the comic finds riot gear in the prison, which seems to be pretty effective. The suits were able to stop walker bites but they were black and very hot and heavy. They seemed to work out for walkers but the Governor knew right away they came from a prison when he saw the suits. Just what I can remember about armor in TWD.

Yeah, that, and Milton also protects his arm at one point when he's working with his walkers, but thats about it. I don't see why its not mandatory to carry at least some protection defensively.

It's entirely possible that the group was never able to find any protection on their supply runs. Can't wear what you can't have. The only protection they DO have are their weapons.

I noticed a disturbing lack of duct tape.
  • edited August 2013
Right, we so need ducktape, I mean when will we be able to make a Paddle Saw without ducktape.

    Well, that, and

I would have settled for Lee keeping his jacket from episode 2..
  • edited August 2013
    It was a nice jacket.

Agreed. Best clothes Lee wore ever. He looked so cool and badass.

Saying that they didnt come across protection to use, thats not really true. You can easily make a shield out of a roadsign for instance, and in places like woodbury/crawford you would have plenty of supplies to make things work :)
  • edited August 2013
Well good work that the armor did for Crawford.
  • edited August 2013
It might have worked if they actually used it ;), i saw nothing resembling like armor in crawford or Woodbury :)

Also why don't everytime people leave their fortified place always cover themselves in walker so they can go around easily, even better zombie covered armour.
  • edited August 2013
Maybe because not everyone thought of it, or it's not always easy to get or that reliable.
  • edited August 2013
@Crixus zombie covered armor, now there's Godmode for you.
  • edited August 2013
Crixus, you used the Konami code did't you?
  • edited August 2013
Armor might be hard to get but definitely be easy to kill one walker and bring it back, then cover yourself but in season 1 Lee only found that out in episode 5 so perhaps the protagonist in season 2 may already be aware of this.

could you imagine trying to outrun a hoard while you are in your armour suit but I guess leather would be more useful. heck I would probably put magazines up my sleeves.
  • edited August 2013
Walkers arent known for their speed, even in full metal armor we could still run, but ofcourse you wouldnt stand a chance against a horde of them if you are surrounded, i just find it weird that they arent using it at all, or even thought about it. exept that one time with the riot gear.

I'm pretty sure he'd have been equally awesome if he was in his regular clothes in the rain.

Covering yourself in walker guts is not a thing people should do often. They can have the virus enter their bloodstream.
  • edited August 2013
It can be unreliable to, you know with the rain and stuff.
  • edited August 2013
I believe they use scent and sound to track their prey. So no I don't think so.
  • edited August 2013
The scent would change. And Lee and Clem made it through the herd while talking.

True, but I meant loud noises like the Bells or a gunshot. Lee and Clem were whispering.

The best one should be shark-resistant overall (I hope I wrote this correct). It's a special outfit for divers so it must be durable and light.

But I don't have any idea how you could get that. But this is the best one in my opinion.

They should all just wear Kevlar.
  • edited August 2013
The problem with everybody wearing body armor in the Walking Dead is that they'll still become zombies when they die. So after a while, you'd just have huge hoards of zombies shambling around with Kevlar, riot gear, and chainmail. FUCK. THAT.

A tank isnt armor. Its a vehicle ;) But that kinda has me thinking off topic. Why didnt Rick try to drive the tank in Atlanta when he got stuck in one? They arent that hard to drive apparantly.

Maybe the keys weren't in the ignition? :D I suppose he didn't have any idea how, probably would have tried to use it if Glenn hadn't rescued him.

a tank is a mobile armored vehicle. Hence armor.

    That's true.

Only the coolest of people wear jackets.

The Fonz would end the zombie apocalypse by hitting a jukebox.
  • edited August 2013
If they did that then zombies are going to look stupid and a joke instead of the "apocalypse".

Everyone with canned goods can make their armor.

But really, Godmode in the zombie apocalypse...

Armor might save you from a bite, but it's hard to move around in and the heat can be a large problem, sometimes it's not worth it.
