Would Fewer People Have Saved Carley If...?

The most common reason I've seen that people save Carley over Doug is because she was the only one with a gun and the experience to use it. TeamDoug all the way, but that was a legit reason to save her.

But would fewer people have saved her if Lilly's gunmanship was showcased in ep.1? Whatever her faults, she isa damn good sniper and saves the group a few times in ep.2 and 3. Of course, there's still the fact that Carley got more bonding time with the player than Doug, and some people might've wanted more than one marksman in a group, but how do you think it would've affected the stats?

Would more people have saved Doug because they would want a group with a more diverse set of skills rather than a group with two people with the same redundant skill? Just curious.

I would still have saved Carley, the number one reason was her personality, she was nicer and more trustworthy then Lilly ever was, period.

Even before Lilly went nuts? She's pretty nice to you in ep.1 if you're nice to her.

    ...Otherwise, she's a total bitch.

It wasn't just that Carley had a gun and could use it. It was that each time she used it, she saved the life of someone to whom she had no attachment and knew nothing about. And one of those people was me. And all this despite the fact that she knew I was a killer. Basically, my choice was between Doug's "I'm a light-hearted nerd" and Carley's "I'm actually a really good person who you can rely on to have your back." So yeah...

Well, she was nicer, and it would have been harder, but she did not try to stop Duck from getting out but that is another story for another thread.

Also, I must add that the idea that people would go "Pffft. Badass chick with a gun? I've already got one of those! Nuts to you, darlin'! You're with me, nerd!" is...unrealistic.

It is not a common thing to say I believe, I fully believe that if they make us choose between two people again they will make it a little less one sided.

Er, I was thinking more along the lines of "Badass chick with a gun? Check. Trained medic? Check. Tech-expert? Check." Y'know, variety in skill sets. I didn't mean to make it sound like the player was collecting action figures and didn't want two Optimus Primes or something.

i don't think it would have made much of a difference if lilly had used a scoped rifle to shoot something like 50 meters away before we got the choice to save either doug or carley, because if peoples priorities were good shooting, more good shots would be better, but i saved doug because he had a very particular set of skills; skills he had acquired over a very long career, and it was a set of skills and intelligence that i thought would come in handy, plus carley had told us about how he saved her, and he seemed like a nice guy

Personally, If you could tell people about your past, it would have been enough for me to really think hard on who to pick. Lilly clearly knows you killed before, maybe in the motor inn if you go and talk to he in episode 3, she tells you she knows your a killer, and threatens to reveal your past to everyone because she knows you didnt. Thus giving you the option to tell other people.

I remember I regretted saving Carley because I thought there would probably be a point where we would need to fix some sort of mechinism or something.
  • edited August 2013
I wonder how many people that saved Doug regretted saving Doug, and vice verse for Carley?

so did you watch the game before you played it? because how could you know if you could tell people about your past at the point of choosing between doug or carley

I did. :p Because, really, adding Bumblebee to your Autobots line-up might balance it out but few people would turn down a second Optimus Prime just to choose him.

...what the hell was I talking about?

Say what? Where's the fun in having two Optimus Primes and no Bumblebee? I mean, TMNT wouldn't be TMNT if there were 4 Michelangelos... Actually, that would be awesome.

lol that is a good analogy though, if you are looking to make the most badass crew you would definitely pick two optimus primes if you had the chance

Even if I didn't like Carley's personality more then Dougs I would have saved her because she saved my life twice in episode 1 so I more then owe her. That was the Deciding Factor.

no, i didnt men it like that. but players didnt know about the past telling hing right away. im just saying someway, somehow it should have been possible for both of them.
  • edited August 2013
True, by deciding factor was she saved me twice, and she is trustworthy and really nice, the rest were just really small details.

yeah it would have been better if Lee could tell them about his past with both choices, but you said it would have made you think hard about who to pick

More people would've saved Doug if his role was switched with Carley's. If he accompanied you and Glenn to the motor inn while Carley went out with you to look for the keys, then there would would've been a percentage closer to 50-50.
  • edited August 2013
I would say 60-40, a little bit better then the 74-26 percent they got.

yeah, because it is generally true that men feel more protective of women, but women don't generally feel protective of men so just the fact that carley is a woman would make her more likely to be saved, like how most people saved christa even though Omid was hurt
  • edited August 2013
True, but it would not have been as one sided, with Christa and Omid is more like 56-44 which is really close, as you said, woman that might be pregnant vs the cool guy who saved your life and has a injury that might be your fault.

I'll be honest, before I got the game, I watched episodes 1 and 2, so for the first 2 episodes, I did things I didn't see, but I honestly liked Doug better, and the player is always a fantastic shot.

I meant after my first playthrough and I decided to play again. To make it difficult for both choices all they had to do was give a subtle hint in ep.1 that Larry told Lilly. Making the character think, "Oh crap, either one I choose someone is still going to know who I am"

one of the reason i picked doug was because i didn't want to talk about Lee's murder, i would have eventually wanted to say something, but i didn't want my introduction to be "Hey I'm Lee, I'm a convicted murderer and i found this child"

when the game first came out it was much more one sided about saving Christa and there was not that much of a hint she was pregnant at that point

If Lilly were good with a gun... since Carley had more screen time and knew about (and trusted me with) my secret, I still would have picked her over Doug. Two guns is always better than one. However, if DOUG were the one with gun skills, and had saved my life twice, versus Carley if she had no shooting prowess but still knew (and trusted me with) my secret, it would have been a lot harder to choose.

Come to Butt-head, Carley. I've got nice batteries.

Lily's gunman-ship being showcased more wouldn't have changed my decision at all.
I would have liked to save them both but at the end of the day, Carley saves you not once, but twice despite knowing Lee's a killer. That's the main reason so many people save her. She saved you, you owe it to her to do the same.
Plus she also proves she's trustworthy by keeping Lee's secret to herself like she says she will and I sensed there could be a possible thing between Carley and Lee which I was all for so.. xD
Also... You can NEVER have enough guns and bullets in a Zombie Apocalypse!

Apart from all the other reasons, I also saved Carley because she was the most attractive chick in the game so far. Yes, I'm shallow like that and I'm not afraid to admit it. Even if she was not shown to be good with a gun, I would have saved her. Probably would have thought about it longer before deciding, but still.

I saved Carley because she gave the impression of a battle weary reporter, meaning she'd have little reason to go bananas over the whole end of the world thing.

Doug just seemed like the type of guy who sat in his parents basement fiddled with nerdy things all day. So I suspected he was quite disjointed from the real world and as such could break down from someone questioning even the slightest of his actions.

Turned out Doug is pretty awesome if you save him, but that's really meta knowledge for the decision.
