I would not say that was despair. Id say that's more "you're finally catching on to the fact that I attempted to rape your wife, started making decisions for the whole group including killing a hostage and risking our settlement here at Hershel's farm, and I've treated you coldly ever since we met back up in the apocalypse."
Yea, even if pointing the gun in "despair" is what happened, it doesn't change the fact that Shane ultimately did a crap ton of stuff that put the groups safety and morality at risk and by even threatening Rick it showed he was unstable and probably fully willing to do it.
So no, I don't think Rick made the wrong choice killing Shane.
Shane was probably my favourite character and I was with Rick on this.
The amount of times I've seen Shane's culpability in these matters reduced to he was messed with by big bad [insert heinous slur of your choice] Lori is laughable. I found Lori very unlikeable, as too some of her behaviour once Rick came back, but then I can't even imagine what it would be like to go through what she did re: Losing Rick; Rick's return (and all the associated shock and guilt), obsessive Shane and the drunken attempt at rape; pregnancy in the ZA, and on, and on).
Not letting Shane own his own shit is A. Too easy and B. Absolutely patronising to the character.
