Walking Dead-Chapter 3 black screen

edited October 2013 in Game Support

Steam version for my PC.
First time I played through the game I remember after chapter 3 the game didn't recall any of the choices I had made. Characters accusing me of doing things I went out of my way to avoid etc. I had to play the game fresh the first time due to chapter 3 not launching at all. Just a black screen and no sound bug so nothing is frozen. Here are the things I had tried.
-Run exe as admin
-Copy the save files, deleted originals. Then played over the final parts of each chapter to 'wipe' the possible corrupt save
-STARTED OVER from scratch (not a fun one..)
I would love to play this game as it intended, carry my choices over. If anyone has a solution for chapter 3 just >sitting< there and not loading please help.

Please try verifying the game cache files.

If that doesn't help, please follow the instructions to run the Support Tool and post the download link to the resulting "support_data_pc.zip" to your next reply in this thread.

  • I'm having a similar problem with episode 2. I decided to play through the game again. (It worked perfect the first time I played through a year ago) When I go to episode 2 it asks me if I would like to overwrite the decisions I have already made. (Even though this is a new saved gave) It doesn't matter what I choose, either way the screen goes black but I can still move the mouse around. Is this a similar problem? I ran the support tool, tell me if you want me to post it. Thanks.

  • Sorry for the late response! Work life. So I got back to trouble shooting it again yesterday, tried a few more things such as updating drivers. Re-installing after backing up all my game files. Cache verified. Still coming across the issue, here are the results of the support tool. http://www.sendspace.com/file/bnvaow

please try renaming the prefs.prop in
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Walking Dead\Pack\default
    to prefs.prop.bak to deactivate it.

  • And bingo! Loaded perfectly and with the episode recap it looks like all the choices remained. Thank you so, so much for that support! You're awesome for doing so!

  • So, I'm getting the same thing with my Chapter 2, except I have a Mac. And before anyone says anything, I know Mac's aren't good for games. I didn't buy it for games. Anyways, here's what the support tool gave me:https://www.dropbox.com/s/jc1ofptyoj5pqxv/TWD support.rtf

That file you uploaded shows the display output of the support tool. What I need is the file it creates, which is named TWD_support_data_mac.zip. I have clarified the support tool instructions a bit. Sorry for the confusion.

You have 2 active prefs.prop files.

Please run this script to keep the prefs.prop in the savegame folder, and deactivate the one in the steam folder

Okay, this should be it then. https://www.dropbox.com/s/p0zi3xxwvwi7djt/TWD_support_data_mac.zip

  • Perfect! Thanks!

That's because you seem to have renamed the folder containing the third episode to prefs.prop.bak by accident in the past. If the prefs.prop.bak folder still exists in
    C:\Users\Stephanie\Desktop\Steam\steamapps\common\The Walking Dead\Pack\
    please delete it.

Then rename the file named prefs.prop in
    C:\Users\Stephanie\Desktop\Steam\SteamApps\common\The Walking Dead\Pack\default
    to prefs.prop.bak to deactivate it.

  • I had to start over from the beginning but it's worth it since chapter two (and hopefully the rest) are now working. Thanks so much for helping!

You can navigate to the savegame folder by starting Finder, and selecting "Go/Go to Folder..." from the menu or pressing CMD-SHIFT-G, and pasting the path below into it.
    ~/Library/Application Support/Telltale Games/TheWalkingDead/
