how to check messages

I see that someone sent me a message when I check out my notifications tab but I have no idea how to check or even READ these messages, its just says I have them under "started communications" Please help me learn how to access my messsages

    That's a count of forum topics you started, not messages you've received.

    You sure about that? Because the first time it showed the number 1 next to that is when i SENT a message to someone via accessing their profile page n i sent them a message, who knowss maybe its both because as far as I can remember I only started 2 forum topics not 3
