He's going to die you know.
At the end of episode 1 if you saved Pete feel free to know that he's going to die. How do I know this? Think about it: TTG is a small-ish studio (compared to say BioWare, or Obsidian) and they can't give you branching paths and multiple endings. Thus they render your ''personal'' story a very linear, mass-experienced thing with a few small variations.
Now, let's go back to Season 1 for more evidence. You saved Ben at the end of episode 4's climax. Hoora-oh shit, he's dead by the middle of episode 5. This is because TT has limited resources and budgets, therefore they can't do massive branching paths with thousands of variables. They have to give you the illusion of choice and consequence and then finally subvert it by some deus ex machina or another type of railroading. This is another reason why Pete will die soon.
Another reason is that people who are writers (wannabe and otherwise) or literary critics, or just well-read, have noticed. Nick is a stubborn, sometimes spoiled prick and he obviously has issues with Pete, though there is an underlying respect for the man, and Pete himself admitted he cares for Nick. Now, there's a possibility that Nick will be the resident character development character (like Kenny was - yes, the hat, the mullet are one hell of an indication if not a funny coincidence) and for a character to develop the easiest way is through ''pathos''.
Pathos is Greek for ''suffering'' and/or ''experience'', and one of the best and easiest ways to do this in fiction is to have one character lose a loved-one and then have them adapt to the new situation and explore the new situation and have them grow as a person.
This is why Pete has little chance of survival, as there's a good set up for Nick to grow as a person, whereas if Pete lives Nick will stagnate and just be another Larry-like asshole.
On their own these reasons wouldn't be all that convincing, but to me when you put them together it does form a strong base for predicting how episodes 2 and beyond might go in respect to Nick and Pete.

Well yeah. But if it's the case saving Pete is bound to score you some points with Nick. He even says you should go for Pete when you go for Nick.
Hm. True enough. So they'll have to plan for the eventuality wherein you may have antagonised Kenny-lite--I mean Nick... So there'll probably be a situation later where you save Nick's life or something and he builds a begrudging respect for you or something.
Umm..neither do Bioware or Obsidian...you may 'think' they do....but they don't...just good illusion.
Uhhh, I thought Nick had already lost his mother? That's enough pathos to make you grow as a person, I believe, no need to kill Pete for that.
I would say that only started his trip, now he needs a final push to finish it. He's still thinking with his emotions about the hypotheticals, rather than his rationality. He obviously hasn't gone past his mother's death and this would be a perfect way for him to do so (speaking writing-wise).
Touche.
Their illusion work is better though due to side-quests, which are more malleable and have varying outcomes.
Right, that does make sense. We don't even know how long it's been since his mother's death, though they made it seem it was recent. I don't know though... The preview for the next episode made me dislike Nick heavily, especially when he blamed me and behaved like a drunk asshole after I saved him. Maybe he's just a spoiled brat and no amount of death around him can change that
He is definitely a spoiled brat, but it wouldn't be untrue to also call him a scared, spoiled brat. I think his assholiness is really more of a defensive mechanism for dealing with the world. After all, one can fight perceived dangers better when they're angry and filled with adrenaline than melancholic and listless with depression.
Rebirth is painful, and Nick is being forced out of his comfort zone slowly, but surely.
So what you are saying is that if a zombie apocalypse happened right now all I have to do is put a trucker cap over my mullet and I will survive?
I think Clem will have to cut his Leg off.
But nothing can top the stiching scene, the damn needle... ughh...
I'm going to go back and save Nick.
You know maybe I'm naive but maybe just maybe there will be a little branching path. Not a permanent one but another doug/carley thing then thats okay (would like alternative endings to that one though such as slightly different deaths).
Like the main suggestion for season 2 was better effects from choices.
