Point of the watch in S2E1?

edited December 2013 in The Walking Dead

For whatever reason you have the option to steal a golden watch from one of the upstairs bedrooms (Carlos' bedroom?). Since there are no repercussions for doing so in the episode, what role do you think it will play in future episodes? I imagine that Clementine would be in real trouble if someone were to find out that she took it. She would probably be the first suspect regardless. What is the purpose of giving us the option to take it anyways, perhaps to be used as a trade or a gesture of good faith in a later episode?

  • I don't know women with jewelry, but maybe she just thought it looked pretty and was tempted to take it for herself. Other than that, I would have no clue.

  • I think you may get something for it in trade later in the episodes, maybe 2.
Tough I think that the real reason is to get clem in trouble for stealing it and kind of penalize the player for over clicking.
    We shall see.

  • maybe its just season 2's "animal crackers"

  • Maybe, but you aren't liable to get kicked out of the group for stealing some animal crackers lol.

I think the theft may serve one of two purposes. 1) Someone will find out Clem stole it and it will create doubt in certain characters about Clem's trustworthiness. 1b) Voluntarily returning it may serve the opposite affect of gaining certain characters trust 2) It serves some other purpose, such as a barter item or it's simply useful to have a watch to meet somewhere in a specific timeframe. I took the watch without really giving it much thought.

  • I took the watch because I was planning on leaving as soon as I stitched my arm. In hindsight it wasn't the best decision, considering that I was forced to stay with the group. I was planning on taking every single item that I was able to xD.

This is what I was referring to. I got the feeling that's why some people are gonna get burned later in the season. I have played enough games to realize I did not/ should not take that watch. I saw the strings attached and alarm bells waiting to go off.

Or not what do I know.

That's a great point, but I was under the impression Clem was going to hit the road asap. I soon realized, "oh crap, I have a watch I stole from the group who seems to be taking me in." Oh well, a lot of the time the safe course of action doesn't always result in the most interesting turn of events.

  • Yeah, I never felt Clem was gonna go right back out on the road. She is just 11 and hurt and hungry and has no supplies. She was pretty much laid down to die when the guys found her by the rock. She needs a group. Further more about the watch, she later can say something like "you left me no choice" to stealing the supplies. Well the watch was a choice, so you (generic player) are a thief and a liar. What can I say, It felt pretty obvious to me that gaining the groups trust was gonna be an issue and the watch was not gonna help.

  • For some reason I have the nagging feeling the watch belongs to Alvin. There's a board game sitting on the desk nearby and that seems like the type of thing Alvin would do.

  • So Clem can sell it and make that dough

Make it rain up in that cabin

  • That was my guess. Seems like Telltale wanted to weed out people by creating an early instance of a choice where the group would distrust you.

  • I'm assuming you snuck in the house from the trap door? For me, breaking into the house already set that tone that I was robbing them, so I just thought I should take all the items I could find. I heard you can tap on the window and Luke gives you the supplies as an alternate course of action. Also, I wonder if that watch has anything to do with that fact that Rebecca is obviously cheating and if it could play a role into that dynamic. It would be really interesting if Clem has the option to join different groups. I have a feeling this current group has been acting really shady based on the way that Pete and Nick were acting in the final scene.

It could be that was Rebecca's room and whoever she's cheating with accidently left it behind. Just speculation.

I was thinking the same, I wish they gave the option to put it back but as it was my first playthrough i don't go back on saves and change things so i am going to have to live with it and see what happens next.

I'm just speculating on what ifs, but assuming that was Alvin and Rebecca's room (they are married). If Alvin was gone and Rebecca's other romantic interest or whatever left that behind in the room on accident, that wouldn't look too great for Rebecca if Alvin finds out the details about the watch. There seems to be a ton friction building between Rebecca and Clem. Also, Alvin doesn't seem to have a ton of pull with the group as far as I noticed.

  • I just thought about what I said and thought why would she cheat in their bed if she didn't want to get caught. ehh who knows other than the writers, who might not know yet as well at this point.

It's going to come up later, I'm sure. Some group tension rounded out by "And my watch is gone!"

That or Clem uses it to barter later. Or both.

  • edited December 2013

Totally a valid point. I just get the feeling that there's something more to the watch than just a simple plot device to create distrust. I'm probably wrong, but it's fun to speculate on this stuff.

  • If it turns out to be the watch of Nick's mom...
    Poor Clem.

  • Alvin's room is on the first floor and I assume he and Rebecca share a room. We know Sarah sleeps upstairs so I think that it would be logical for her father to sleep on the same floor.

  • Maybe it's the reason why the next episode is called "A House Divided"? Because some believe she took it and some will disagree and cause everyone to split up. Just an idea.

  • I'm going to be mortified if Telltale surprises us with the watch.

Someone could go back to get it when the group decides to split for the mountains (it's a valuable keepsake?) and they get killed by bandits on the way. If Clem stole the watch, you could prevent the death by showing it to the group member. They'll be pissed you stole it, but they'll be alive. This'll be a complete 180 for everyone who thought stealing the watch would be a bad idea.

I don't know, this could be interesting.

  • I think its Nicks mom / Petes sister's watch. I reall hope if there is an effect it will be early next episode and not halfway through ep 4 or something

"Hey clem wow we barely survived those years together your the best friend ever.... Whats the time... hey what you stole that the first day you met us and now I hate you for it"

That said it effecting things at the start of ep 2 would be nice

  • I just thought she took it because I thought I remembered Lee having a watch and her photo got washed away so... But I would assume that the watch might belong to Carlos.

  • i think that its Alvin's watch, and Rebecca will find out that Clem took it.Then she will use that against Clem to keep her from Telling Alvin, that Rebecca cheated on him.

  • it's not Luke, it's Alvin. At the window next to the front door you hear Alvin and Rebecca arguing and you can then knock on the window and talk to him. You can either threaten to tell Rebecca he's helping you or guilt-trip him. Of course, I went for the latter, and I promised to help his situation with Rebecca later on. He gives you the rags and a juice box, so you still have to talk to Sarah and go to the bathroom.
A group choice would be a pretty awesome feature in the next episodes and that would open loads of possibilities. I figured this group was gonna be Clem's home for a while and that they would find out about me sneaking in, so I chose not to steal the watch. Whenever the owner discovers it's gone, the main suspect will of course be Clem, and all of their support and trust is needed to have the best chance of survival

  • I didn't take it purely because I know it may come back to haunt me if I take it.

  • edited December 2013

That seems a little too far fetched to be honest. I'm pretty sure Alvin would be more upset about the fact that Rebecca cheated on him, rather than Clem stealing his watch.

  • I didn't pick it up because I KNOW that if people are holding on to these things 2 years after the world's gone to shit, it has some personal value. Much like how Joel from TLOU keeps his watch, this may be the same thing. It definitely will have impact later on. Taking it would just give them more reason to not trust you... Well. That is if you didn't blackmail anyone.

  • maybe the time the timepiece is displaying is a hint or foreshadow?

  • Maybe trade it to the bandits? Lol

  • ...

Why do I miss this stuff, first the Window Scene with Alvin where I could've gotten a sweetass Juicebox and now a chance to get my Clementine a fancy watch?

I have to slow down when I play ._.

  • Plant it on Rebecca and get her arrested.

  • I would like to see a situation where Clem needs to trade it infront of the person who she stole it from (Carlos?) and it gets them out of trouble, but gets her in deep shit when they are alone.
