The Walking Dead: Season 1 GOTY Question

Hello,
I really liked The Walking Dead: Season 1 and I wanted to buy a physical copy for my friend, but there is one problem.
He hates Steam-probably because his internet sucks- and he won't play the game unless it doesn't require him to connect to it.
I've searched all over the internet, and the game descriptions doesn't include "Steam account" as a requirement, but some people still claim that you do need Steam account even for the physical copy and the telltale's website where you can buy the game has the Steam logo on the top-even thought Steam is not listed as a requirement- so here is my question: Do you need the Steam account to play physical GOTY version of The Walking Dead: Season 1 for PC?

Edit: I bought the game and it's absolutely Steam free.

    TWD isn't a steamworks game, so that should work.

    But it's $6 on steam right now, he should just take that!

    I wish he could, but he is completely against it.
