edited January 2014 in The Walking Dead

i know that Many people didn't like Ben for good reasons however i never hated i always liked him and i was sad when he died what did you guys think of Ben?

Comments

  • He was the Screw-up of the group. He was put in the story to mess things up and be the disliked one, so i blame telltale for his hatred

  • he probably represented a version of myself if I had actually been stuck in a ZA. Maybe that's why I couldn't ever bring myself to hate him, knowing I would have to hate myself as well.

  • I don't like him.

  • The Black Cat of the group

    OR

    The Ultimate Fuck-Up

    Which one sounds better?

    I don't like him.

  • Personally i liked him, he post-poned the raiders from attacking and it wasn't even his fault that duck got bitten.
Eitherway the raiders would have attacked because they stopped getting supplies from the farm.

  • I don't really like him or hate him. He was just a kid who had been through a lot, the same as Clementine and Duck. However, he had lost everybody and was trying to help out in his own naive way. This often backfired horribly, but he never did anything intentionally bad. So I kept him with me until the end, hoping to give him that big redemption moment. It's a shame he never got it, more for his sake than Lee or Clementine's. He was so down on himself.

  • Ben was a nice guy, he played with Clementine. But he was incredibly nervous. The bandits probably cornered him and he offered giving them supplies so that the group wouldn't be attacked anymore, he thought he was helping. But afterwards he was wrought with nervousness and guilt. If he admitted to taking the supplies right after the attack, the situation for him probably would have turned out better, or at least I would have had a higher opinion of him. The fact that heaped this guilt of getting Katja and Duck killed upon himself was stupid, and if he didn't blame himself for it, for all we know, Kenny wouldn't have hated him for it.

I think Ben was a good guy, but incredibly nervous and felt unnecessarily guilty.

  • He also just wanted to be useful a lot of the time, although he did it without ever asking the group leaders (Kenny, Lilly, Lee), which was a mistake.

Taking the hand axe out of the doors was just plain stupid though, he should have recognized that it was one of their axes and in the door handles for a reason.

  • That was just his character. It's like saying that we only hate the stranger because the writers made him kidnap Clem. I think it's good writing to be able to make a character that you can disagree about. Many people sympathise and relate to Ben, but i feel too much of what he did was inexcusable.

  • a guy who tried to do the right thing. I dropped him though, a burden to the group

  • I find it disturbing how much people try to justify hating, and/or killing, a grieving teen with mental health issues.

  • Well, I guess you can't blame Ben for much of what happened, he thought he was doing the right thing, and he was very clearly sorry for it when people died because of him. I kept him alive, and I was glad that he got a chance to at least try and redeem himself, and also that Kenny eventually forgave him.

He has to have been one of my favorites. Killing him was one of the feelsiest parts for me. Still don't know what happens if I don't drop him.
Whoops. That should say Season 1. Damn.

  • Well said, but...

So I kept him with me until the end, hoping to give him that big redemption moment. It's a shame he never got it, more for his sake than Lee or Clementine's. He was so down on himself.

Ben did have his redeeming moment, though. He stood up to Kenny and told him to stop wishing he was dead. Ben finally opened up and spoke about all the hardships he's been dealing with, including never learning about the fate of his family. What's important is not that Ben "manned up" and yelled at Kenny, but that Kenny actually empathized with him and forgave him. Ben's too old to be a child, but too young to be an adult, and getting the worst of both worlds is a real drain.

  • He cocked up many a situation, but I couldn't really hate him for it. Guy was barely leaving his teens and obviously wasn't the alpha male type so I couldn't hold it against him as vehemently as some do. Hell, he wasn't being actively malicious and sabogatery(?) so I had no reason to think he was Satan's own excrement upon the world.

Might've helped that I saw myself in him. Seriously, how many of us would've been a Lee or a Molly, fuck even a Christa, and how many of us would've been a Kenny, a Lilly or a Ben?

  • Most videogamers like ourselves(or as far as video game stereotypes go :p ) would've been either a Ben. Or perhaps a Doug at best. If not the walkers.

  • Oh yeah?! Well...ummm........................I've got nothing ._.

  • I actually kind of liked and pitied Ben, he was just a self-conscious teenage kid who wasn't made for the apocalypse . I saved him in my first play through, it was the only time I actually disagreed with Kenny. Yeah, he made mistakes. But, he didn't get all those people killed intentionally, him and Kenny were among my favorites aside from Lee and Clementine.

  • Ben is in every way a normal thinking human being he just has no common sense. Like at all ._.

  • Complete and utter scum bag. He led to the death of Carley, Katjaa, Duck, Brie, etc. I understand that he is a teen, but he caused SO much pain and suffering to EVERYONE. He even has the nerve to be angry when everyone doesn't trust him with anything anymore. You have no idea how much I wanted to strangle him when he took the axe... Or telling Kenny that it was all his fault WHILE BEING ATTACKED BY THE ZOMBIES. You get little to no sympathy from me for being so god damn stupid. Oh and leaving leaving Clementine. NO ONE leaves Clementine and gets away with it...

  • I hated him. Up until the belltower in Episode 4, I just couldn't bring myself to like him. Everything he did, he managed to somehow screw up. I'm surprised he didn't actually shoot himself with his gun at the beginning of Episode 4. Being a coward as well as a screw up really didn't endear him to me either. But when he asked me to drop him... man, I felt like crap when I realized how much his screw ups and cowardice were affecting HIM. I forgave him. I also dropped him. It was his redemption, in my eyes. After seeing how episode 5 goes if he's alive, that's the one choice I'd change though.

  • You butt blasted? Booty bombarded? Fanny flustered? Backside broken? Pooper peeved? Colon clenched? Derrierre devastated? Tushy trashed?

  • I get the fact that he's still just a kid, but for fucks sake could he be any more useless!
I'd probably be somewhat like Ben, we all would. But leaving Clementine to the walkers while he had a loaded gun in his hand is awful. Even firing a few shots at random would have been better.

I only saved him because I didn't want Clem to be mad at me, and I wanted Kenny to give him a much deserved ass kicking when we got back to the house.

I'm glad that Kenny found it in himself to forgive Ben for the death of his wife and son, but I can say that I would never have been able to forgive Ben if I was in Kenny's position. He took away every reason Kenny had to live (but he's probably still alive).

  • I just felt sorry for Ben throughout, and I pulled him up out of sympathy. He meant well but just had no common sense, and he will have seen a load of crap before he met Lee's group. It was a real shame for me when he died, because he never actually made it right in his eyes

  • I think he is stupid, useless piece of sh*t. Being stupid doesn't justify you as a good person when you cause others so much paind and suffering, even when you don't want to. I only saved him in the belltower because I think that scene with Kenny and Ben in 5th episode is awesome

  • He felt pain and shame more than Kenny did when he had his family to lose. Why can't people just deal with this?

  • The two standout moments that he fubar'ed for me were abandoning Clementine and removing the hand-axe from the door. Jesus how much more cowardly or stupid can one get?
