This game had me thinking the worse of Toad. (spoilers)
When I saw Toad's son crying and saw all of the blood, I thought to myself "I sure hope he is not abusing his son."

He's definitely not the best dad in the world, but I wouldn't say he's abusing his son. Being overly strict and rude, oh hell yes, but he still cares about his son's safety as can be seen when he mentions one of the Tweedle's roughing him up.
I think he cares about his son more than anything. In the comic, when we see him at the farm, he looks depressed, and has a distinct lack of TJ. I get the feeling that TJ will die, and once it happens, Toad just stops trying, and lets himself get taken to the farm, blindly following what people say.
