[Spoiler] Implications of Episode 2 about glamour

edited February 2014 in The Wolf Among Us

I haven't read the Fables comic, so I don't know if glamour that allows you to take the appearance of anybody is canon. In any case, I do feel it breaks the whole concept of the detective story. Among the "rules" to make a good whodunnit (Knox's Decalogue), you must exclude the possibility of body doubles, or at the very least give it some boundaries. But if anyone can take the appearance of anyone, then the spectator can't deduce anything, and only the writer can - arbitrarily - decide who is real and who is fake.

It's particularly disturbing on the photo at the end. With the implication of shapeshifting glamour, TTG can pull out * any* explanation out of their a**. Crane is actually Blackbeard. Or Gren. Or the Woodsman. Or the ginger from episode 1. Or Lily, and Crane is taking the appearance of Snow because he's a creep. Knowing that, I don't really care about solving the mystery, because as I said, the truth will be whatever the writer feels like, and beyond my grasp no matter what my reasoning is.

  • You can still do it, if you cleary state what the rules are. Problems for a good mystery would only arise if they change the rules to fit the story. Some people here already had the idea that the body was glamoured up, so people with knowledge of the source material could connect the dots and then the episode actually showed you how you could find out if someone is using the "black market" glamour...I get the feeling the whole scene with Lily is just there to train you to spot differences in clothing or apperances...

But yeah, the Crane thing could be anything. I mean its pretty clear that its not really the answer as it is episode 2, but yeah...Its not easy to create a mystery with magic.

  • They did indicate that the black market glamours are low quality. No thirteenth floor member would be involved, as they said. I think it's clear that if any more glamouring is involved, there will always be imperfections, otherwise you're correct, the story could go anywhere.

  • Considering how many people noticed the "Mirrored Cop" in Episode 1, I think you may be on to something. Maybe they are setting us up to do some kind of Fables Line Up, and the key to finding out who the real one is and who is under black market Glamour is to pay attention to the clothing.

  • Doesn't work like that and it was established in episode two that the glamour Lily was using was not perfect and you can obviously see there are differences. Besides, the blackmarket glamour is going to be another mystery.

And Crane had an unhealthy obsession with Snow in the comics too and the comics established that he was kicked out of Fabletown. Obviously, it seems this is the reason why.

  • Crane is a creep, so having someone use glamour to look like Snow is in character for him. Now the real question is if he was the one that killed her.
