How to get it "righter"

edited February 2014 in The Walking Dead

I really enjoyed season one and am very much looking forward to episode 2 of season two. I like the interactive story model, and I think the story is really quite good. However, I do have a suggestion for how this type of game could get much better... In short--actually make the decisions and attitude of the character change the plot. Instead of one and only one path, I would suggest three distinct paths.

First is the "Lee is a good guy" path which the game forces you to play. Great story, but maybe Lee is not such a good guy... Maybe he drove his wife away because he's a jerk.

So second is the "Lee is pretty much a dick" path, where you drive the group apart and have Lee meet his end in a completely different way, maybe even in a different location... For instance, let's say you play through episode two with the "Lee is a dick" mentality. You find Ben is dealing with the bandits and you and Lilly just kill him right there on the spot... A fight breaks out, shit goes down, Katjaa and Duck die and it's Lee's fault, Kenny freaks out, takes the supplies, jumps int he RV and leaves. Those who remain try to salvage what's left of the St. John's farm and have an epic battle with the bandits. You'll meet Omid and Christa anyway, have some other sort of adventure, everyone but Clem, Omid, Christa, and maybe Kenny still dies at the end... Clem develops a much different attitude towards the world and enters season two as a different person. She would still face the same story, but perhaps it could open up some different dialog choices...

Third would be the "Lee is an indecisive wimp" path, where you are more or less passive and try not to take sides and end up putting yourself / the group in a situation where you can't win / can't escape. The story progresses along either path to a certain point and then you realize very plainly that your failure to take a stand in either direction has done both you and Clem in. Sucks for you, but hey, it's the zombie apocalypse! Take a stand or suffer the consequences of being a doormat... Rewind and play again but this time don't be such a pansy...

More branching, more options, more influence over the outcome of the story. It would mean more game to make and things would take longer to develop. There would have to be care taken so that the branching paths you take in any one season merge back together towards the end and don't cause there to be twice as many branches in each and every following season. It could certainly be done, and I think it would be worth it. It would make for a much richer and more engrossing experience where the input of the player really does tailor the story to the way they play. I want more than just minor differences in dialog or mostly meaningless differences in when and how secondary characters die...
