He appears to be a rival or enemy of the cabin survivors, and could be a potential bandit leader. He is notorious to the cabin survivors, who believed that Clementine was sent by him to find them. Carlos mentions that Carver was once a member of the group. The group initially fears the bandits who attacked Clementine and Christa, presuming they were being led by Carver, prompting Pete and Nick to suspect that Carver instigated a mass-shooting of survivors on a riverbank near the group's cabin. In 400 Days Russell says he was part of a group and he couldn't handle the way the leader "Steve" did things. From his description of his previous group, I'm almost positive he was talking about Carver, Rebecca, Alvin, Carlos, Sara and Luke. It seems that Carver too survivalist to the extreme and though if you're a glass half full type of person you may see the line in which Carver was trying to protect his group (like how Roland was trying to protect his) but he was going about it wrong. It wasn't a democracy, he turned it into a dictatorship and it may have started to get more dangerous staying with him than to go out solo.
My prediction as to why they initially left is because of Rebecca's pregnancy. Along the way they ran into Nick, Nick's mom and Pete. Rebecca may have feared for the life of Alvin ("Please let it be already and... And let it be his."), her life and the life of her unborn child. Don't hate on me, I think Rebecca is a total bitch, but I think she's justified in her distrust towards Clementine. Not that Clementine has done anything to provoke her wrath, but she can't be too careful with so much on the line. It falls into that "better safe than sorry" category.
As I mentioned before, it's a lot like Roland, Shel, Becca and the cancer survivors. They may be being hunted because they know too much and their disappearance puts the rest of the group they left behind in danger. Carver seems like a total sociopath (if Russell was talking about him and based on the small preview we got of him) so we'll have to wait and see. I'm so siked for episode 2, just two more days!
