Ben (does season 1 count for spoilers?)

Can Ben not die? I mean, if you go it alone, and he's left guarding the boat, wouldn't he theoretically be alive?
Also, what happens if you bring Ben but not Kenny in S1E5?

    Once you return to the mansion everyone you left behind joins up as well and things proceed normally.
